Does Guardian Data Map vindicate Iranian VP’s charge over world Zionist drug conspiracy?

We posted recently about an antisemitic speech given by Iranian Vice President Mohammad-Reza Rahimi at an international forum on drugs. Among other risible accusations, Rahimi charged that Zionists were responsible for the spread of illegal drugs around the world.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will pay for anybody who can research and find one single Zionist who is an addict. They do not exist. This is the proof of their involvement in drugs trade,” Rahimi was quoted as saying.

On July 2 the Guardian published a new post in their ongoing data blog series, one mapping the use of illicit drugs around the world. The data included a comparative analyses of drug use by country.

Among the categories, the Iranian VP would be interested to read, was ‘Drug deaths by Country’.

Iceland leads in this category with 883 deaths per 1 million citizens.

Iran is at 207.

Most interestingly, Israel, consistent with the Rahminian logical inference, is way down at the bottom with exactly, yes, “0″ drug deaths per 1 million citizens!

Is it possible that what appears to be the mindless babble of an Iranian antisemite may really be the timeless insight and penetrating wisdom of a sage cleverly making use of both ancient Persian intellectual traditions and the Guardian data blog?

Mohammad-Reza Rahimi

I was clearly too quick to pass judgement.
