Guardian Recommends Blood Libel

Its not enough that “Comment is Free” obsessively publishes material painting Israelis, Jews and the state of Israel in the worst possible light,  “Comment is Free’ also takes to recommending similar such material in its so-called “Best of the Web” section on its home page.

Here’s a snapshot of what the Guardian is currently recommending:

As you’ll notice, item no. 2 on the list links to an article at  truthout called “Farming in Gaza is a kind of resistance“. If you click through, you’ll come to an article by Max Ajl who after setting the scene of Palestinian women tending to “golden bunches of lentils” near the Gaza border with Israel, makes the following unsubstantiated claim:

Or farmers try to plant seeds there, and instead of demolishing vegetation, the Israeli Army kills cultivators, lancing them from hundreds of meters away with sniper shots to their heads and necks. Many die this way, according to the major human rights organizations in the Gaza Strip.

We were there to escort them as they harvested their crops. The thinking is that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is less likely to kill peasants cultivating their crops in the presence of international witnesses.

The writer is clearly suggesting here that the IDF randomly takes pot shots at Palestinian civilians for target practice on a regular basis- and his evidence? Major human rights organizations say so. No link of course and no attempt to substantiate this bald faced attempt to once again slur Israel with a demonizing libel.

Why though a blood libel?

Well besides the fact that the fabricated allegation of the gratuitous murder of Palestinian innocents at the hands of Israelis amounts to a contemporary example of a blood libel, the accompanying image to the article shows blood splatter superimposed on an image of lentils as if to graphically drive the point home.

So in case you’re wondering who is Max Ajl, he apparently is a Jew heralding from Brooklyn that went to Jewish day school and is now based in Gaza/Egypt spending his days with ISM activists and running a blog called Jewbonics. Here’s a small excerpt from one of his recent blog posts:

Another celebration of Israeli Independence Day. In New York, the Salute to Israel Parade is enlisting gullible kids from my elementary school to celebrate ethnic cleansing and politicide, giving them, once again, no hint that Israel Independence meant Nakba to the Palestinians, an intolerable act that should be compensated in kind: return of the refugees. In Gaza, Israeli soldiers celebrated Yom Ha’atzmaoot by tapping out some warning shots to terrify Palestinian protesters trying to assert their right to free movement within the Gaza penitentiary, keeping them well away from the devastated buffer zone that could be growing crops but instead is raw dirt littered with bits of metal, bundles of useless wire, and broken irrigation tubing, the exposed earth constantly eroding and bleeding its carbon into the atmosphere.

A real modern day Theobald Jew.

And this is what the editors at “Comment is Free” see fit to recommend.

Says it all really doesn’t it.

  1. the fact that the fabricated allegation of the gratuitous murder of Palestinian innocents at the hands of Israelis amounts to a contemporary example of a blood libel

You’re on very thin ice, there.

When people make fabricated allegations about US/UK troops killing innocent civilians is there a special term for that?

I appreciate the specific historical background and ongoing legacy of the blood libel, but you can’t just assume it EVERY time Israelis are accused of killing civilians.

  2. So your headline “Guardian Recommends Blood Libel” is irresponsible bullshit, I’m afraid.

And why say Max Ajl “apparently is a Jew heralding from Brooklyn”?

Worst of all – cut out this hateful “Theobald Jew” crap.

Ajl clearly does not have the same feelings about Israel that you do. Why demonize him?

  3. the Gaza penitentiary

What did the population expect when it elected terrorists dedicated to the destruction of Israel? Israeli citizenship?

  4. This Max Ajl is typical of the westerners who are attracted to the anti-Israel movement. They are failures at home and seek something to justify their educational, employment, or romantic failures. Blaming Israel fills the bill for them. If you condemn Israel you will get a job at the Guardian and be given a set of like minded friends. Anyone who can write and report well would not be working at the Guardian.

  5. Nice selective quoting, John. Let’s look at what the author actually says shortly afterwards:

“And internationals have been blasted as they accompanied peasants, or at demonstrations. Bianca Zammit, a 28-year old Maltese human rights activist, was almost hamstrung by a deliberately aimed sniper bullet that pierced her upper thigh on April 24.”

The photograph is available on her website:
    http://www.maxajl.com/?p=3489

And, of course, the author was offering their own empirical evidence, which you make no attempt to dispute.

“Well besides the fact that the fabricated allegation of the gratuitous murder of Palestinian innocents at the hands of Israelis amounts to a contemporary example of a blood libel,”

equals nonsense. You’re just repeating the point, not supporting it. ‘Blood-libel’ referred to the mythical ritual sacrifice of children – they certainly were appalling myths, and raising their spectre clearly would be obnoxious; but the TruthOut author was talking about the repression of civilians which is not only a documented fact, but is a concrete political situation, not a mystical fantasy.

“A real modern day Theobald Jew”

calling Jews anti-Semitic because they disagree with you is itself anti-Semitic.

“And this is what the editors at “Comment is Free” see fit to recommend.
Says it all really doesn’t it”.

Aye; they’re missing out on thoughtful talking points such as your own.

  6. richardhutton

The Zammit case proves absolutely nothing about the accusation being leveled by the Theobald Jew, Ajl. Zammit, a member of ISM (a group that refuses to condemn terrorism against Jews – the code word is “resistance”) was in attendance at a demonstration – from the video footage online (which is heavily edited) it is not clear whether the demonstration turned violent (instigated from the Palestinian side as is often the case) or whether Zammit was being used as cover to plant explosives.

  7. the guardian article is nothing more than the usual melodramatic hyperbole….the journalistic equivalent to the shooting of bambi’s mom….all palestinians and ngoers are doe-eyed innocents who’d never ever seek to inflame the situation nor to incite a reaction from soldiers…and all members of the idf wear black hats and have big curly moustaches, black capes and go ‘mwah-ha-ha’.

it’s a simplstic, heavily biased account of a conflict for the easily led and challenged of mind, and deals only in stereotypes.

  8. Typical Left Media .
Shout the accusation so everybody can here you , but they never check the facts and never apologize for their mistakes ( 90 percent of the time ).
Just as Btselem, Maan the guardian is referencing to fairy tales written by the best science fiction writers of our time .

  9. I’m sorry you even drew attention to this person and his website. He doesn’t seem to have done much and perhaps the Guardian tossed him the small bone of a contentious and probably highly embelished story to keep him financially afloat.
Such featherweight individuals do not warrant free publicity.

  10. Wiki gives us “Blood libel accusations have often asserted that the blood of Christian children is especially coveted, and historically blood libel claims have often been made to account for otherwise unexplained deaths of children.”

To claim blood on a poster is the same as blood libel is wobbly.

  11. @Heres to Davy.
You are making yourself an idiot right ?

    Btw:
I had a comment deleted on Cif after it was approved ( I am on pre moderation)

  12. here’s to davy- ‘To claim blood on a poster is the same as blood libel is wobbly.’

i can see your point, but i’d argue that it’s part of the same continuum with the original blood libel at one end and which also encompasses jenny tonge’s ‘organ harvesting by israeli medics in haiti’, the turkish tv series where israelis harvested organs from iraqis, this sort of ‘they take pot shots at anybody’ spiel, right through to and including the highly loaded accusations of ‘genocide’ and ‘apartheid’. oh, and not forgetting this highly over emotive piece which is about as truthful as your average article in heat.

all have a connection to the blood libel in a way, as they all fabricate and play on the supposed ‘brutality’ of jews. this in turn creates or perpetuates (depends on the strength of one’s position) another negative myth and stereotype of the jews and which can then be recited the next time a ‘kind and gentle’ islamist ‘does a mumbai’ on a jewish community. the perpetuation of such myths creates an atmosphere where some callous fuck can then trot out the ‘but because of …. they had it coming’…

  13. If Gazans tunnel under borders, enter Israel to kidnap border guards, and fire Qassams at Israeli civilians, then Gazans should expect to find imposed upon them a buffer zone in which it is not safe to go.

Sorry, I have no sympathy for the Gazans. If they don’t like the buffer zone, they need only stop firing Qassams, release Shalit, and sign a peace treaty.

  14. thh- ask them why you’re in pre-mod (unless it was a real corker and you implied that their mum took up the tradesmens or summink)…they are generally woolier than the articles they host when replying.

i do have to say that it does seem that the mods on cif let a lot of the anti stuff stay up, often for hours on end, and some of it glaringly anti-semitic, as opposed to just being critical of israel.

  15. @zoidberg
I got railed off topic so I guess its ok , but Im sure the one that got me off topic can still post with no problems.
But this pre mod lasts much more than the other pre mods i had .

  16. “richardhutton’

Sock puppetry is not allowed. Use your CiF name from now on. If anything, it makes you look foolish.

  17. Heres to Davy is spot on with his/her comment.

To claim blood on a poster is the same as blood libel is wobbly.

I would go further, though: To claim blood on a poster is the same as blood libel is a colossal load of bunk.

  18. @THH my premoderations usaully lasted around a month according to their community guidelines it’s supposed to be a ‘temporary measure’ that should result fairly quickly’ in either full posting rights being restored or the poster suspended. They just seem to send out generic emails when you query the continued ‘temporary ‘premoderation status. Hope u get it sorted out

  19. @David Pinto

I would go further, though: To claim blood on a poster is the same as blood libel is a colossal load of bunk.

    This maybe true .
But to make up a story, accuse the usual suspect and then emphesize the usual suspect’s brutality/Evilness with a poster is not different from a blood libel.

  20. richardhutton, don’t you know what a Theobald Jew is? Read your history.

Zoidberg, good points above. It’s all to do with context, isn’t it, and particularly given CiF’s readiness to believe the Afton Bladet lies as peddled by Freedman, a person could be forgiven for making the link. CiF is hardly noted for its even-handedness about the Middle East, much less for its honest approach to facts rather than peddling supposition and questionable opinions as facts.

American, hear hear. The choice is in the hands of the “democratically-elected” Hamas (who have disposed of all their opposition so those who elected them in, however democratically, cannot now elect them out just as democratically even if they wanted to do so.

Matters are made much worse by the freely-offered sympathy vote from al-Grauniad, deliberately manipulated by Islamist supporters, which absolves Hamas and Palestinians from all guilt and blame for even their most murderous activities.

  21. David Pinto, I guess you are entitled to your opinion, (this is not, after all, CiF) but see HairShirt’s answer above to richardhutton about Freedman’s deliberate spreading of the Afton Bladet lies and what HairShirt says about context, given that we are talking about CiF.

And you really do look rather silly, if not downright stupid, to claim that something is a “load of bunk” without proving why it is. Note, your opinion alone doesn’t count for much. Who are you anyway and how are you qualified to judge?

(Are you by any chance the “David” reincarnation of khartoumi?)

As I said, this is not CiF. The higher standards here mean that rubbish is called precisely that, unless it can be verified.

And until you can verify what you have said, you are speaking rubbish.

  22. Yohoho says that I should not call something a load of bunk without proving why it is. Here is my answer: The term blood libel has a specific historic definition. To say that a picture which has blood spattered on it is a blood libel is simply not true. What do you want me to prove?

  23. They are soooooo obsessed with Jews; they are sickening.
On the CiF blog about how a “compromise” form of female genital mutilation is becoming tolerated in US medical circles, one CiF-er comments thus, in an entrely gratuitous introduction of Jewish practice – and completely ignoring the fact that Muslim males are also circumcised. 39 people have “recommended” this comment, doubtless gleeful that the Jews are taking another swipe:
    skipissatan

I’m with you Lakshmi, this is disgusting and wrong. But one can’t help wonder where the equivalent article about male genital mutilation is. Is the reason for this that whilst female genital mutilation is a practice from muslim/african countries, male genital mutilation is common amongst the white American Jewish community. Double standards perhaps?

  24. THH

” I am on pre moderation”

There are reasons for things in life. You will have made allegations or have tried to push the boundaries. It is dead easy to have posts printed on CIF . I push the boundaries all the time and have dozens of folk flagging up every post that attacks Israel.. justified or not…and yet I survive..lil ol’ me .

I have often stated that people try to get banned on CIF …as it increases their status here…but …as I say ..I dont seem to be able to do this despite trying hard.

  25. American

“Sorry, I have no sympathy for the Gazans”

To be fair no one has ever accused people on this site of ever having had any sympathy for the Gazans… a couple hundred civilians died last year ..violently ..at the hands of the only democracy in the ME and on this site the reaction was mainly that they were set up by Hamas.

    CIFWatch = sympathy free zone.

  26. Yvetta

[Skip] “male genital mutilation is common amongst the white American Jewish community”

    [Yvetta]”Muslim males are also circumcised”

    So are most American gentiles.

  27. “a couple hundred civilians died last year ..violently ..at the hands of the only democracy in the ME”

Not quite. They died at the hands of Hamas, either directly or indirectly.

  28. Heres to Davy/Abandon Hope/Berchmans,

“To be fair no one has ever accused people on this site of ever having had any sympathy for the Gazans… a couple hundred civilians died last year…

You have implied *you* have some sympathy for Gazans, yet not a word of criticism would you utter against Hamas.

Then at the drop of a hat you will sneer at Israelis, joke about antisemitism and make snide comments when maturity is required.

So please, don’t tried to take the moral high ground.

You are a vacant ignoramus, who continually discusses the Middle East and antisemitism without actually knowing much about either topic.

If you were truly concerned about the Gazans then you’d bring yourself to criticise Hamas who imprison and tortures Gazans without anything approaching a trial.

In short, Heres to Davy/abanon hope/Berchmans you are a hypocrite and one almost completely devoid of introspection.

  29. pretzelberg

“Worst of all – cut out this hateful “Theobald Jew” crap.”

Tell the attention seeking Theobald Jew to cut off HIS bullshit and no more Theobald-ing around for anyone.

M’kay pretzelberg? God when they handed out self righteousness you sure were in the front of the line. You’d bend over backwards to excuse slander.

Look- its libel, right? Can we agree on this? And it’s about Israelis spilling shedding innocent blood. So how about calling it blood-libel? Or is that not etymologically accurate enough for you?

  30. modernityblog

“You have implied *you* have some sympathy for Gazans, yet not a word of criticism would you utter against Hamas.”

I have on possibly 150 times…maybe more on CIF and here ..called for Hamas to change policy.. I have condemned them as cowardly anti Socialist and unIslamic … you talk of imprisoning Palestinians…are you serious when Israel has thousands in prison?

BTW I like the transference…the extremists here have a go at you and you then have to show your credentials by having a go at me. Cant stand up to them??.Pretzy can ..ask him how to grow a pair.

  31. Berchmans

“Wiki gives us “Blood libel accusations have often asserted that the blood of Christian children is especially coveted, and historically blood libel claims have often been made to account for otherwise unexplained deaths of children.”

If you’d bothered to scroll down further in the wiki entry you’d notice that under the “modern world” section there are contemporary examples of blood libels the most recent example of which was the Aftonbladet libel.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_libel

  32. Berchwhatsit says “you talk of imprisoning Palestinians…are you serious when Israel has thousands in prison?”

    Prison Statistics Scotland 2007/08
“The majority of the prison population are sentenced prisoners, with a daily average of 5,815 in 2007/08, about 4 per cent more than in 2006/07.
The most recent average daily figure for prisoners held on remand was 1,560 for 2007/08. This is very similar to the previous year’s figure of 1,567, indicating a possible levelling out after a marked increase of 60 per cent over the past ten years,”

Every country has thousands in prison. Your skimpy implications that leave people to draw negative conclusions (always always always about Israel, of course) for themselves are an obvious ploy that most of us see through so easily that we don’t even bother to mention it.

  33. Greensleeves

“Prison Statistics Scotland 2007/08.. a daily average of 5,815 ”

    .

In my wildest drams 🙂 I never thought I would have a good word to say about Scottish prisons… the harshest and fullest in Western Europe.. but they are better than some! Modernity blog said “Hamas who imprison and tortures Gazans without anything approaching a trial.”

I wonder if these guys got a trial.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestinian_prisoners_in_Israel

“”Between 1967 and 1988, more than 600,000 Palestinians were held in Israeli jails for a week or more “”

  34. Heres to Davy:

“”Between 1967 and 1988, more than 600,000 Palestinians were held in Israeli jails for a week or more “”

This “statistic ” was suppled by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, an organization established in 1995.

Well, that’s some “statistic.” What a tremendous turnover, don’t you think?

The judges must have been working 24 hour shifts to convict them all. When they got to gaol, they must have been sleeping 20 to a bed and in every nook and cranny of every prison in the country. I wonder how the International Red Cross observers coped, visiting all these inmates. Must have been hell for them keeping up their records.

IRC Records? Oh, there don’t seem to be any.

  35. FoolMeOnce

Look- its libel, right? Can we agree on this? And it’s about Israelis spilling shedding innocent blood. So how about calling it blood-libel?

FoolMeOnce is a satire mechant, right? It’s difficult to know sometimes on the Net.
