Birds of a Feather

On June 15 and 16 respectively, the Guardian’s CiF site lent its hospitality to Bernadette Devlin McAliskey, the Northern Irish catholic activist who campaigned against the British government in 1969 at the onset of the troubles, and Chris Doyle, of CAABU, the organisation whose remit is to present the Arab world to us in touchy feely loveable terms, and to constantly remind us of Israel’s villainy.

Bloody Sunday: Put Britain in the dock by Bernadette Devlin

Before getting to the article, here are some things we should know about Devlin:–

1) As an MP in the British parliament in 1972, she crossed the floor of the House and punched Reginald Maudling, whom she accused of lying, in a statement about Bloody Sunday.

2) She has a prison record,of which she is, no doubt proud, because of her involvement in what became known as the Bogside barricades.

3) On a visit to New York, she was given the honour of being given the keys to that city by the mayor, which she then passed on to the Black Panthers, in a deliberately provocative act against her hosts.

Devlin is given free reign by CiF, to paint the British government in the worst possible light, following the Saville enquiry into whether the 14 peaceful, unarmed demonstrators at what became known as the Bloody Sunday massacre were killed deliberately by the British government, whose “anonymous and brutalised soldiers of its alphabet army should be in the dock at the international court of justice in the Hague” and whether the “British government committed a war crime in 1972 and in so doing started a war”. The Saville inquiry took some 12 years, and cost the British taxpayer hundreds of millions of pounds, and it was set up because the initial inquiry by Widgery was considered a whitewash.

The inquiry found that the actions of the members of the British army were “unjustified and unjustifiable”, but that is not enough for Devlin, our doughty fighter for truth and justice, who opined,”[i]f Saville has closed that route to truth and justice, the British government will consider it worth every penny ” (referring to her view that the government should itself stand in the dock at the ICJ court in the Hague).

In her conclusion, she took the irresistable opportunity to connect that “missed opportunity” of the British government’s non-appearance at the Hague to the other cause so beloved of the thugs and bullies of the IRA and Sinn Fein, namely, trying to destroy Israel. And so we get the following:

“Had the British state been speedily held to account at the Hague, things might have been different for a lot of people, not least for nine Turkish human rights activists on their way to Gaza. they might not have been so confidently slaughtered by the state of Israel”.

Of course the thing that joins the IRA, Sinn Fein and Hamas at the hip is their drive to remove the “colonialist invaders” from territory they consider exclusively theirs.

The next day……

Off the hook: Israel’s own Widgery inquiry into Bloody Monday by Chris Doyle

Chris Doyle serves as director of CAABU (although no mention of that anywhere in the CiF piece), the same CAABU that purports to “[p]romot[e] a positive and enlightened approach to Arab-British relations in government, parliament, the media, education and amongst the wider pubic”. In other words, blackening Israel’s name at every opportunity in the court of public opinion, as Doyle’s numerous letters to the press will attest.

Doyle is perhaps best known for advocating that the Union Jack should be replaced with something less offensive to Muslim sensibilities, the cross of St.George being a graphic reminder of the crusades.

In the Guardian’s CiF, Doyle finds himself at home in his natural habitat, and so lets rip, unlike his usual restrained style (for him) when writing to say the Times or the JC, (who stupidly publish his vile propaganda.)

And thus we get, inter alia:–

“The man who ordered the attack on the aid ship to Gaza, (Netanyahu), set up the inquiry…..has announced its outcome even before it has started”.

He calls the inquiry a “re-run of Widgery”. ie. a whitewash.

He describes the future inquiry as a kangaroo court, because the chairman, Jacob Turkel, has stated that holding people to account is a marginal issue.

He says that “Turkey has understandably dismissed the inquiry”, and so it cannot be valid. (The same Turkey that in the last few months has assassinated hundreds of its Kurdish “terrorists” of the PKK, including pursuing and killing them across the border into Iraq, against international law. And the same Turkey of the Armenian genocide of upwards 1.5 milion.)

He accuses two independent observers on the inquiry of bias towards Israel.

He names the Kahan Commission into the Sabra and Shatila massacres as an example of Israel’s record of investigating itself as “shockingly poor”, because after Ariel Sharon was found to have “personal responsibility”, (even though the massacre was in revenge for the assassination of the Lebanese prime minister by Muslim forces loyal to him, and no Israelis were involved in the killings), Sharon was allowed to remain a minister.

On and on and on goes his litany of hate, minus any context, such as demanding the total lifting of the Gaza blockade, without any mention of the Hamas rockets aimed at Israeli civilians, that makes it necessary to prevent the inflow of deadly weapons.

“Israel, like a spoilt child, can do as it pleases” with impunity.

Then, “[h]ow can a government that uses overwhelming force against civilians, torture, detains children without trial, steals land and resources of another people, demolishes their homes and property, and has violated so many laws and conventions it would be difficult to list them on one page, seriously be expected to hold itself to account?”

And how can any decent, fair-minded person take seriously the words of a proven liar, in the pay of the Arab lobby, on a website well-known for its Judeophobia and hatred for the world’s only Jewish state?

  1. These assholes are worse than Chamberlain:
Even after the attacks in London they haven’t learned. Hopefully the first thing that the global Caliphate (with Londonistan as its capital) will do is execute those so called leftists (wonder if they remember “Religion is opium for the masses”?).

  2. Let’s face it, Irish ladies’ Israel bashing has replaced Camogie (Irish: camógaíocht) as the Irish ladies national sport.

In truth, Bernadette McCaliskey (who bashed up the late Reggie Maudlin on the House of Commons floor), Mairead Corrigan-Maguire(ex- “peace woman”) and Mary Robinson (chairman of the Israel-bashing Durban 1 conference and ex-Pres of Ireland) should start their own Camogie team.

The team should be called “The Israel Bashers Camogie Club” and they could use their Camogie sticks instead of the pick-axe handles used as clubs on the Marmara. But Israelis and Jews worldwide can see these old hags coming a mile off.

  3. The IRA has long-standing connections with Middle East terrorist groups dating back to the 1970s. It is not surprising the Guardian has given Devlin a platform to spout her filth.

  4. I certainly have/had more sympathy for the IRA than for Hamas. At least the former largely (although not exclusivley) targetted the military.

But Bernadette McCaliskey actually punched a British MP? That I did not know.

  5. To Devlin, nothing has happened in the last 38 years : the Russian state did not invade Chechnya and level Grosny, the same Russian state did not invade Afghanistan, the beloved Turks did not invade Cyprus, the same beloved Turks did not suppress the Kurds, the British did not invade Afghanistan, the Chinese state does not occupy Tibet, no Tamils were killed by the Sri Lankan State. Would these have been prevented “had the British state been speedily held to account at The Hague” ? The truth is that Devlin does not care, and the world does not care.

  6. “At least the former largely (although not exclusivley) targetted the military.”

    pretzelberg,

Even an elementary search on the Internet, which you should do before commenting would reveal that the IRA targeted the British mainland in the postwar period and then in the 1970s under the PIRA.

As such Pubs were bombed, Oxford Street was bombed and even a shoe shop.

The civilian death toll attributed to PIRA is probably well over 500.

Equally, it should be noted that Bernadette McAliskey and her family have been targeted numerous times by loyalist terror gangs for assassination.

And that she is not connected to Sinn Fein or the IRA, who she is critical of, rather the IRSP and INLA, but that was ages ago.

IF you really wanted to criticise her views in a constructive fashion then a good starting place is the Good Friday Agreement, which she opposed.

  7. Duvidl has now written a team song for the above-named “Israel Bashers Camogie Club” thus:

    Hags and Witches
(to the tune of “Nymphs and Shepherds.”)
(Hat tip: Thomas Shadwell [1642-92]and Henry Purcell[1659?-95])

    Hags and witches go away,
In Ireland’s groves go bash and flay.
    From you we need a holiday;
    From Robinson and Corrigan.
From Devlin, from their clap-trap and sophistry.
You banshees howl; from truth you ran,
    Whilst you express banality.
    Hags and witches go away.

    DS Al Coda

  8. Modernity, you’re right. Drawing parallels is always dangerous. One has to know the ins and outs of each circumstance in detail and nuances of each can always be argued changing the picture fundamentally

That’s why the IRA supporters and the anti-Apartheid supporters and the various factions throughout the world that identify blindly with the Palestinians without knowing who or what they’re talking about basically make fools of themselves. This is where you get Guardianistas talking for instance about Israel ‘carpet bombing’ Gaza – they know that they should be against Israel but they’re not exactly sure why.

The only time it does work is when both target the same group – as in the Palestinians and the Nazis targeting the Jews, using the same materials and images though one talked of Jews and the other talks of Zionists. That is where you see both the Palestinians and Nazis as having the same evil intention towards their victims.

The IRA had also very strong links to US funds.

Loyalist Paramilitary groups have long standing connections with Extreme Far right Fascist terror groups

  11. Unfortunately there has been an antisemitic streak in certain forms of Irish nationalism and Republicanism from the beginning, which evolves very easily into anti-Zionism. It is partly reflected in the highly Catholic Eamon De Valera’s rejection of the Peel Commission’s recommending of partition in 1937:

“I read the Old Testament many years ago. I am afraid I have forgotten many things I read; but one passage I recall clearly. It is the story of Solomon’s judgement of the two women who desired the same baby. I remember how when Solomon ruled that the baby be divided the real mother screamed, `No! No! Give the baby to the other woman!’ That is my answer to partition. The rightful owners of a country will never agree to partition.”

    http://www.atholbooks.org/current/launches.php

(note his spurious equation of land with a living being: land may be divided without injury to its inhabitants; a baby may not. The fact that he was a Catholic and was pro-Palestinian Arab (largely Catholic) Christian and Muslim nationalist is hardly coincidental)

as well as his infamous offering of condolences to the German embassy upon hearing of the death of Hitler.

That ‘natural’ Catholic empathy with Palestinian Arab Christians and Muslims, and antipathy to Palestinian and Israeli Jews has continued in various forms ever since, not least in my Irish nun cousins.

The Loyalist adoption of Israel as a symbol doesn’t help, but is secondary. More pertinent is a ‘natural’ identification of the alien, greedy, predatory colonial Zionist, Palestinian or Israeli Jew with the British and the Loyalists of Ulster. The two strands are mutually reinforcing.

  12. One needn’t add that, had De Valera been faithful to his parable, Palestinian Muslims and Christians would have given the land to the Jews in question.

On this occasion his native Irish literary wit clearly deserted him.

  13. “Doyle is perhaps best known for advocating that the Union Jack should be replaced with something less offensive to Muslim sensibilities, the cross of St.George being a graphic reminder of the crusades.”

    Interesting.

Has he ever called for the removal of the sword from the Saudi Flag, which is an offnce to millions of people not of the islamic faith, who were forced at the point of the sword to choose between conversion to Islam or death?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Saudi_Arabia.svg

  14. Eamon de Valera was a complex charachter, and the awful incident of him signing Hitlers book of condelence can sometimes be taken out of context, so much so that Two decades after the infamous signing, Irelands Jewish community considered the incident to be an aberration in the Prime Minsters overall record, and for his consistent support for the Jews of Ireland they honored de Valera by planting a forest of 10,000 trees in Israel in his name.
The Irish Jewish community also helped to save the lives of hundreds of Jewish children from Vienna, the children escaped the Nazis via a Kindertransport train and were taken to a farm in County Down, once the war was over de Valera allowed more than One Hundred Jewish Orphans from Czecholovakia to stay in Delvin,West Meath for 15 months before they emigrated to Israel and the States.
And the first Jewish Mayor of Dublin, Robert Driscoe was himself a member of the IRA

    He missed the point entirely.

The mother said leave the baby as a whole and give it to the other.

    The arabs never said that.
They refused to devide the baby but also refused to hand it over.

  16. forgot to add this:

While the Jews not only got far less than what they were promised time and time agaon but were willing to settle for a cou ntry without their capital as long as they will have a refuge.

  18. @here to Davy ‘Our finest troops shot a bunch of teenagers throwing stones’.

Your ‘finest’ troops shot 27 unarmed civilians who were not throwing stones, they shot a priest waving a white hanky and they killed 14 innocent people on a civil rights march, 7 of whom were teenagers. They also killed 11 civilians in Ballmurhy west Belfast in 1971, but no inquiry into that one, maybe in the next 40 years

  19. Well said smtx01,

I see that Heres to Davy/Abandon Hope/Berchmans is as big an ignoramus when it comes to Ireland as he is on the Middle East, quel surprise !

  20. Yes, I do know of Irish Jewish estimation for De Valera, which, so far as Irish Jews were concerned, was deserved.. I wonder what he thought of their planting trees in his name in occupied or stolen Palestine, though.

Would they have been allowed to stay?

  23. Margie, I agree with you. Parallels should be used as analogies to illustrate points – they rarely map onto events completely. Unfortunately given the sloppiness of thought which underpins and underlines the language so often used in the MSM, the analogous nature of a comparison is often lost, and sometimes deliberately overlooked in order to score political points.

One case in point is the too-ready comparison of the Northern Irish situation during the troubles with the I/P conflict when even Lord Alderdice, who was among those who were instrumental in bringing about the peace agreement in Northern Ireland said that the I/P conflict is far more toxic.

Unfortunately, he, too, has fallen into the trap of failing to see the overall context of it and blaming Israel alone for the persisting situation. He was the prime mover behind a move to have the UK government recognise Hamas. Perhaps that has more to do with innate antipathy on his part (being English) towards Jews, and particularly towards Israeli Jews who have the temerity to defend themselves and shocking naivete about Hamas’ capability to behave as civilised peace partners to Jews.

  24. ‘de Valera allowed more than One Hundred Jewish Orphans from Czecholovakia to stay in Delvin,West Meath for 15 months before they emigrated to Israel and the States’

‘Would they have been allowed to stay?’

Probably. But I was making a point about the unfortunate ease with which Irish nationalists can slip into anti-Zionism.

  25. zkharya

“I was making a point about the unfortunate ease with which Irish nationalists can slip into anti-Zionism. ”

This should be obvious. A hugely powerful Britain was dominating a minority. The fact that they had done it for hundreds of years sets it apart from the I/P debate ..where the giant leaps in power differentials only occurred post Soviet collapse ..to the point now where Israel could destroy all her enemies and half the world in a few minutes.

Apart from that… the callous mistreatment of minorities is the glue that holds Nationalism and anti Zionism together.

    at his most ridiculous

it is unimportant who has most weapons but who is to be most to be trusted with them.

if my neighbour would scowl and swing a very ordinary kitchen knife back and forth while in the elevator with me, it would scare me senseless.

If I see police parading around the airport hung with what for me looks like real weapons it makes me feel slightly uncomfortable because I think they have good reasons to carry all those bullets around. Do they themselves scare me? no way!!!

OK I’ve succumbed again and tried to explain the world to brainless HTD
I know it’s useless, hopeless etc and especially now when he tells that he’s been around in the 70s AND remembers the time …
it beggars belief – but maybe he was 4 years old at the time and thus remembers it as fun …

  27. What Sike said,

Heres to Davy/Abandon Hope/Berchmans has several tactics and one of them is when pushed into a corner he’ll argue that he has some authority on the subject.

For example, he will go on and on how he’s done postgraduate work and even been on a antidiscrimination course (a requirement of his work, so it hardly counts) etc etc

But what he won’t do is put things accurately, or with any cogent argument.

It is beyond him, these subjects are far too complex they require depth of knowledge and a perception of things that he simply does not have.

  28. modernityblog

“he(s) even been on a antidiscrimination course (a requirement of his work, so it hardly counts) ”

Of course I had to do it…who would want to do it..it is mind bogglingly boring . Do you think I want to be right all the time…sneered at because no one can argue with you.. secretly fancied by people of every gender…race…religious background and ability or lack of it.

In all modesty it is not that I understand a great deal about anti Discriminatory practice..it just that no one here has the remotest clue and in the land of the blind.. the partially visually impaired guy ( or gal) is king ( or queen) ! 🙂

  29. Heres to Davy/Abandon Hope/Berchmans,

You try to make a virtue out of necessity, which was a work requirements, more often than not you will bang on about your antidiscrimination course as if it is some halo to wear.

The fact is, you are plainly pig ignorant on these topics, yet you want to have your tuppence worth, like the Pub bore.

Frankly, no one is interested in your ill informed views.

You don’t particularly know about anything, you don’t read and you don’t actually argue full sentences, you sneer and you ramble.
