Arafat ordered Hamas attacks against Israel in 2000

This was published in the Jerusalem Post

The late Palestinian Authority chairman Yasser Arafat had instructed Hamas to launch terror attacks against Israel when he realized that peace talks with Israel weren’t going anywhere, Mahmoud Zahar, one of the Hamas leaders in the Gaza Strip, revealed on Tuesday.

“President Arafat instructed Hamas to carry out a number of military operations in the heart of the Jewish state after he felt that his negotiations with the Israeli government then had failed,” Zahar told students and lecturers at the Islamic University in Gaza City.

Zahar did not specify when and how Arafat instructed Hamas to launch the “military operations” – most of which were suicide bombings targeting Israeli civilians.

However, it is believed the reference is to Arafat’s response to the failure of the Camp David summit in 2000.

This was the first time that a senior Hamas official disclosed that some of the Hamas suicide bombings during the second intifada, which erupted 10 years ago, were ordered by Arafat. Until now it was widely believed that Arafat had only ordered his Fatah militiamen to carry out terror attacks on Israel.

  1. You’ll be able to rank sites on their honesty by how quickly they include this new reality, if they ever do.

Actually this is a rarity in this genre. Generally it goes the other way. The Palestinian myths pile on one another to be used lavishly and embroidered on recklessly by cif commenters such as jRuskin/Moeran and papawhatsit.

There’s a new star helping them called LtSlick who gave us a glimpse into his level of knowledge yesterday so that we can understand the value of his opinion on various other subjects he pronounces on

“has to sell is knowledge, and the most advanced electronics, software, military systems, and medical expertise.”

Well considering that the military systems are all knocked off US or Russian surplus… I’ll not be investing in that.

as for the rest. I’ll be off to the Far East for my electronics thanks. Decades of expertise and provable products. I’ve never seen an Israeli LCD TV on sale…. with ot without a boycott.

Medical expertise I wouldn’t be able to say categorically… but I doubt it. I mean I’m sure there are some very bright people there, law of averages and all that…. but they ain’t leading the world.

I’d say that he keeps up to date by reading the back of his box of cereal at breakfast.

  2. I trust zahar almost as much as I trust my neighbour’s cat to nip over to Tesco and do my shoppings.

The thing which is not disputed is that between 95 and 2000 Fatah’ arrested many Hamas operatives including high ranking ones and turtured them badly.
Some of the executions when Hamas took control of Gaza were “settling of scores”.

On October 2000 Arafat released them all (each and every one).

This is probably the deal (or understandings) they agreed upon release.

  3. I am shocked…

The serious problem is that we (as in Obama and the naive world) are repeating the same mistake once again.

    Like Hollywood they like sequels.

LtSlick’s post could explain the uncontrolled immigration policy of the UK. If a British expert on electronics with decades of experience considers the mass production of LCD TV-s the last development in electronics then the UK relly needs millions of immigrants – maybe they can find among them someone who can fix a blown fuse or a leking gasket in the bathroom.

Regarding the “knock off surplus” – those US and Russian militaries must be extremely stupid – they are buying back from Israel their own surplus paying for it top money.

This post is the perfect mirror of the ignorance (and in this case the professional level) of the “anti-Zionist” Guardian CIF commentariat.
I’m conviced this slick guy (if he’s really an expert in electronics) must be on social security from the nineties – no selfrespecting electronic firm would employ such an ignorant jerk.

  5. Does it really make a difference?

The PLO itself was made up of many factions and arafat was always setting the dogs against each other, the accusations against Israel just projection.

There was always a handy faction to let loose while presenting a face of feigned innocence.

You see this is one of the realities created on the ground by the Arabs which the West has bought hook, line and sinker…..the people cannot be controlled, the famed Arab street rises, the sundry terrorist groups act on their own AND at the very same time understand that Arab gov’t rule their masses with an iron fist.

Somehow it is just this group, that has dissident armed factions acting on their own.

Nothing happened before without arafat’s orders.

Nothing happens in gaza today without meshal’s orders.
