Muslims must accept the burden – of antisemitism

This is cross posted by Bataween at Point of No Return

This morning, I found myself nodding in agreement with Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, whose column in The Independent was titled ‘Stop blaming Israel for every grievance in the Middle East’.

I can’t say I usually see eye-to-eye with Yasmin, but this was a thoughtful, articulate column.

Yasmin Alibhai-Brown was disquieted at the double standards which single out Israel for special opprobrium for its ‘crimes’, while the atrocities committed in Syria, for instance, where the regime had slaughtered hundreds, attracted a pathetic handful of protesters outside the London embassy.

For those who have never heard of Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, she is a journalist of Muslim African-Asian origin with the UK Independent (a newspaper as left-leaning as The Guardian but in worse financial straits).

‘Muslims need to accept our burdens too,’ she wrote, contrasting Jewish self-criticism with the distinct lack of introspection in the Arab world. But apart from this flash of insight, Yasmin’s progressive agenda never seemed to join the dots between the treatment of Arab rebels and the antisemitism driving the conflict with Israel.

Israel was guilty of ‘crimes against humanity’ against the Palestinians, she said, burnishing her progressive pro-Pal credentials, without specifying which crimes she had in mind. ( The fictitious Jenin massacre, perhaps? The shooting of Muhammed al-Dura, a proven Pallywood production?)

Somehow the ethnic cleansing of the Middle East of its minorities and the dispossession of its indigenous Jews never seems to figure as a burden on the Muslim conscience. The fact that 14 centuries of religious and cultural antisemitism preceded the creation of Israel, indeed created the need for Israel among the Jews of Arab and Muslim world (the majority population in Israel), has yet to penetrate the ‘progressive’ mindset. They have yet to recognise that hostility towards Israel is the same bigotry that Muslims show towards non-Muslims (and non-Arabs like Berbers and Kurds). It has its roots in totalitarianism and is symptomatic of every thing that is wrong with the Arab world today.

Yasmin has swallowed the canard that the Palestinians ‘paid the price’ for the European Holocaust. Most likely, she has never heard of the 1941 Farhud in Iraq – seven years before Israel’s creation – in which pro-Nazi Arabs led by the Palestinian Mufti of Jerusalem slaughtered 145 Jews. She is blissfully ignorant of the fact that some 400 – 500 Palestinians incited the local populace to murder, rape, loot from and mutilate the Jews of Baghdad – seventy years ago almost to the day. Most probably, she has never given much thought to the fact that the Palestinian Mufti was the Nazis’ staunch ally, to whom Hitler was willing to subcontract out the extermination of the Jews in the Middle East.

While the Left persists in its distorted views, reversing cause and effect in the Middle East, it is hard to see how we can move on. But the Arab Spring has begun to shake a few entrenched convictions. Let’s hope a few more scales fall from progressive eyes.

  1. I can’t say I usually see eye-to-eye with Yasmin, but this was a thoughtful, articulate column.

Then I’m surprised that CifWatch allowed your article to be cross-posted here. Their method is to cherry-pick an isolated sentence that they don’t agree with, label the speaker as an Israel-hater, then ignore everything else the speaker says. Refer to Adam Levick’s article here yesterday on Mona Eltahawy for the perfect example.

  2. Rob Miller:
Please provide proof to back up your claim, particularly from the three articles that she has posted on CiF.

  3. Yasmin’s article is surely vitiated by the fact that she continues to offer “my total support for Palestinian nationhood and right of return …. ” The consequences of support for the right of return and what she sees as such are not entirely clear but it would seem that she is still calling for the destruction of Israel in its present form.

  4. Yasmin’s article is surely vitiated by the fact that she continues to offer her “total support for Palestinian nationhood and right of return …. ” The consequences of support for the right of return, and what she might regard as such are not entirely clear but it would seem that she is still calling for the destruction of Israel in its present form.

  5. Remember, she is an alcohol drinking, hijab opposing liberal.

She is pretty much the most liberal Muslim in the UK.

This is the best she can come up with.

  6. Alibhai-Brown is a sick joke. Her faux analogy with apartheid South Africa is typical.

Nevertheless, I dipped into the replies and was stunned by ‘frankiec_2005′ :

“The Arabs have 22 countries and the Jews have one. A 23rd Arab country is of questionable value to humanity. A Jewish nation is of unquestioned value. The Arabs launched several wars of overtly proclaimed genocidal attempt against the Jews and deserve far greater defeat than the preposterously restrained Jews dealt them. The recent, anti-Semitic, Islamist, Arab-Nationalist and Soviet propaganda “sphere of influence” inspired Palestinian identity and label arose in 1964 and gradually thereafter and has as its purpose, foremost, Israel’s destruction, rather than the creation of anything in particular. The Jews’ ties to Israel are among the longest-standing, best documented, best evidenced and deepest felt of any peoples’ ties to any land. The Jews’ claims are the most modest of any nationality in terms of territory size and, prior to the Jews’ development of the land, value. The Jews’ contributions to the world exceed those of any nation, as measured by Nobel prizes, ethics, law and many less important fields that, by themselves, would be deemed important anyway. The world needs more of this. Time to let the Jews realize their full potential. Time for the Arabs to cry foul over losing their genocidal attempts despite Israel’s offers to coexist. Time for the world to stop creating Original Sin myths against this extraordinary people to justify their destruction. I am a proud Philosemite and I proudly decry Arab and Islamic imperialism and attavistic European Jew-hatred and I see both clearly for what they are. “

  7. Alibhai-Brown writes:
Successive Israeli governments and their global cheerleaders and backers across the world are guilty of crimes against the humanity and rights of the Palestinian people, they who were made to pay for the European Holocaust.
and gets a sympathetic article here today while yesterday Mona Eltahawy is denounced as an “Israel-hater” for saying nothing of this sort.

Perhaps you guys can get together and post the official CifWatch definition of an “Israel-hater” ?

  8. My post was not particularly sympathetic, MTC. I was trying to make the point that Yasmin does not make the necessary connections. Antisemitism is a symptom of the general Arab Muslim culture of fanaticism that victimises its dissidents, women and minorities.

  9. Yasmin’s alibi for not being a Jazz monster is looking a bit threadbare.

  10. Bataween:

I am not arguing or disagreeing with you; I was only comparing your article to the attitude of Adam Levick towards Mona Eltahawy. If he describes her as an “Israel-hater” and attacks her on Cif, then I wonder why he allows your article on Brown with its “sympathetic” approach:
This morning, I found myself nodding in agreement with Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, …… this was a thoughtful, articulate column.

  11. Mindthe… :

Nice try, but Adam posted that link yesterday. Have you actually listened to her speech at J-Street ? Please tell me exactly what part of it qualifies her as an “Israel-hater”.

  12. MTC:

When Mona positively noted, and supported, Egyptian views about Israel which she characterized as follows, I think its fair to say she hates Israel.

“We will continue hating Israelis until they start treating Palestinians humanely”

Again, over 95% of Egyptians polled hate Israel. Mona condones this in a speech at J Street (and gets applause, by the way). Please tell me how I’m cherry picking an isolated statement. Her message to the crowd at J Street was clear. Egyptian hatred towards Israel is justifiable.

  13. First Michael White, now Yasmin Alibhai-Brown. What next – an article by Seamus Milne lambasting the double standards and excessive criticism of Israel?

    @ MindTheJewishTraitors

What kind of stupid and hateful moniker is that?

  14. “What kind of stupid and hateful moniker is that?”

One that is calculated to get up the noses of the appropriate individuals.

  15. Adam:

If you would actually bother to listen to her speech, you might realize that she is trying to explain to Israelis how to put an end to that hatred, a necessary step to achieving viable peace. Do you have problems with that ? As to “justifiable”, I think that “understandable” is more appropriate. But I guess you want to continue the occupation and have the Arabs love you for it at the same time. Her message to J-Street was indeed clear and it is not surprising that a young, educated and involved crowd – the future leadership of the American Jewish community – received her so warmly. But they obviously don’t realize that all the problems in the Middle East can be solved simply by calling everyone who disagrees with you an “Israel-hater”, “anti-semite” or worse.

  16. Pretzelberg:
Don’t you recognize which of our favourite morons wrote that comment ? He is stupid enough to believe that he is annoying me. But he is the type of reader that this site apparently encourages to post comments.

  17. Can’t see what all the fuss is about. Alibhai-Brown only pays lip-service to the thesis that Muslims should, tentatively, stop the double standards they have exercised till now. Most of her article is still devoted to statements maligning Israeli governments over the years. Hardly the sign of progress among Muslims getting away from scapegoating Israel.

    A non-event.

  18. “I think its fair to say she hates Israel.”

Love and hate are strange things. On one hand, there are countless things I love about European culture: art, movies, movies, movies, architecture, language, music, literature, food, and on and on. On the other hand, it is perhaps because I love those many aspects of her so much that I hate beyond all measure her treatment of the Jewish people. It is akin, I suppose, to the hatred one would naturally feel after being betrayed by the person one admires and loves above all others.

  19. “Don’t you recognize which of our favourite morons wrote that comment ? He is stupid enough to believe that he is annoying me.”

No, of course I didn’t, which is why you were moved to write the above comment.

Besides, it’s nothing but the truth.

  20. A great article in Ynet by Smadar Shir 05 03 11

“From a slave to an IDF officer:A Guinean’s story.

Not the kind of an article that you would find in the Guardian.

  21. “If you would actually bother to listen to her speech, you might realize that she is trying to explain to Israelis how to put an end to that hatred”

In suggesting that everything is Israel’s fault, you really are no better than the Jewish state’s worst enemy. And I don’t believe that committing suicide is any solution to Israel’s problems.

“and it is not surprising that a young, educated and involved crowd – the future leadership of the American Jewish community”

They no more represent the Jewish community than the Judenrat represented the Jews of Lodz. As soon as Soros pops his clogs (date of birth: August 12, 1930), it will be a dead duck.

  22. As soon as Soros pops his clogs (date of birth: August 12, 1930), it will be a dead duck.

So there is no ideology behing J-Street ? Just 150,000 morons who follow the piper with the most money ? That says a lot about the future of the American Jewish community. And – Bibi must be envious; why can’t all of the Jews in Israel be morons like that ?

  23. Douglas Murray calls Alibhai-Brown the stupidest woman in Britain and concludes:

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown is a disgrace to the journalistic trade. She combines two devastating characteristics, sanctimony and stupidity. Individually they would be dangerous. Together they are fatal”.

My own take on this woman is that nothing that comes out of her mouth has been processed by her brain. I don’t even know why you guys think that she’s important in any way. She is a non-entity.

Read the aformention article here: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/douglasmurray/100030524/is-yasmin-alibhai-brown-the-stupidest-woman-in-britain/

  24. MindTheJewishTraitors

One that is calculated to get up the noses of the appropriate individuals.

It doesn’t get up my nose. I just find it rather pathetic.

    @ Fairplay

In what sense were you “stunned” by frankiec_2005’s post. Due to its racism?

  25. MTC:

re: “But I guess you want to continue the occupation and have the Arabs love you for it at the same time.”

Honestly I don’t give a damn if the Arabs continue hating us, but to claim that the “occupation” is the cause of that hatred absurd, just as its absurd to deny that much Arab animosity towards Israel is informed by antisemitism. Did they suddenly begin hating us after the Six Day War? Did they hate us less after our withdrawal from the Sinai, Gaza or S. Lebanon?

  26. MindOfCrap, You and Jihad-Street are upset that AIPAC is more effective than you can ever hope to be.

Especially with Jihad-Streets thinly veiled attempts to undermine Israel, Jihad-Street is sure to fail – like the late “Air America”, the socialist answer to Talk Radio in the US.

  27. pretzelberg,

“In what sense were you ‘stunned’ by frankiec_2005’s post. Due to its racism?”

More likely due to the lack thereof–the lack of the fashionable, politically correct racism that holds that, alone among the nations of the world, the Jews do not have a right to political sovereignty on their ancestral land. And the fact that a comment like that appears on The Independent, where it is as much out of place as it would be on the Guardian’s CiF.

  28. Adam:

Honestly I don’t give a damn if the Arabs continue hating us, but to claim that the “occupation” is the cause of that hatred absurd, ……

Well, I guess that says everything: if you label the cause as “anti-semitism then you don’t have to try to understand it or deal with it. Poor Mona, who unlike many on CiF appears to at least have an open mind, has apparently been duped by all of the young Arab professionals that she describes in her speech. Thank goodness you are here to save us from this blasphemy.

But I still find it interesting that so many educated, aware and involved young American Jews managed to be duped by her and others. Do you think that they put something in the Kool-Aid or that they just don’t understand how seditious terms like “peace”, “freedom” and “dignity” are ?

If they were good Jews they would approve of the Likud’s program for peace in the Middle East which is ….. ummmm … errr ….. oh,well – never mind.

  29. “But I still find it interesting that so many educated, aware and involved young American Jews managed to be duped by her and others.”

Many educated, aware and involved American Jews were also duped by communism. Many educated, aware and involved Germans were members of the SS. Many educated, aware and involved gentiles are anti-Semites.

  30. Pretzelberg : Your accusations of racism are baseless ( and tasteless ).
You’re a waste of space. You understand nothing.

PS. It helps to be Jewish when discussing Jewish matters or evaluating antisemitism. You’ll never get it.

  31. MindOfCrap, bleats the same ole socialist doublespeak.

    “peace”, “freedom” and “dignity”

Your kind of “peace” means islamofascist supremecy
Your kind of “freedom” is Sharia Law
Your kind of “dignity” is Infidels knowing their place at the back of the bus

It’s like the FAKE “anti-war” lemmings who have nothing to say against osama bin laden, al qada, hamass, hezbullah because it would “counter revolutionary”.

  32. ziontruth

More likely due to the lack thereof

I see. So racism when directed against Arabs doesn’t count, eh?

    Fairplay

Pretzelberg : Your accusations of racism are baseless ( and tasteless ).

Ditto. And why on earth “tasteless”??

PS. It helps to be Jewish when discussing Jewish matters or evaluating antisemitism. You’ll never get it.

    a) I wasn’t aware that this was about “Jewish matters”
    b) You’re talking nonsense anyway.

  33. MindTheJewishTraitors

Until August 1944 that was also how Mordechai Chaim Rumkowski tried to deal with the truth.

You are clearly a scumbag with zero morals.

  34. Thank God I’m An Infidel

Don’t be surprized to learn that “pathetic” is how you are viewed here.

In a mental asylum I’ve no doubt that most people would find me strange too.

  35. “You are clearly a scumbag with zero morals.”

At this point you are meant to clench your buttocks, purse your lips and mince out of the room. Go to it, big boy.

“In a mental asylum I’ve no doubt that most people would find me strange too.”

No, you’d fit in just fine.

  36. Bataween, the article is thoughtful but only to an extent – I’m afraid that I still believe that Alibhai-Brown is one of the silliest females on the planet, who, as Abtalyon says, pays lip-service to half-thought through ideas.

She has less insight than a gnat. She prattles about the recognising the right to return of all Palestinians (no doubt to keep her Muslim minders happy) but obviously has no idea that this and the more open attitude towards Israel from Muslims that she prates about earlier are generally accepted to be mutually exclusive. It’s twisted cognition, all right, if not evidence downright lack of intelligence to be able to burble contradictory notions and not even recognise the cognitive dissonance in them or feel uncomfortable about them.

It will be a cold day in hell before Arab/Muslim culture will recognise, let alone own its guilt for the ethnic cleansing of Jews in the Middle East. Heaven help us all if it is left to Alibhai-Brown.

Crap, how has this very silly woman any authority to explain anything to anyone, let alone to Israel? She can barely construct a sensible argument for herself! Why should anyone take her at all seriously?

Adam, you are correct that Arab/Muslim antisemitism dates from way before the establishment of the Jewish state. Given the literal-minded way in which Muslims are enjoined to follow their prophet and his koran, and the disgusting Jew-hatred in both of those, it’s scarcely surprising.

  37. “You are clearly a scumbag with zero morals.” pretzlenut

And you are a ridiculous tantrum-throwing hypocritical prig. But everybody already knew that.

Again, move to CiF, which is your natural habitat.

  38. “In a mental asylum I’ve no doubt that most people would find me strange too.” pretzlenut

Ah, that´s why you run away from your mental institution. It explains a lot. But, behave, otherwise will call the ambulance.

  39. “So racism when directed against Arabs doesn’t count, eh?”

So a piece that faults the Arabs for what they do is racism, eh?

Long, long ago, it used to be that for an opinion to be called racist, it had to attribute inborn, hereditary, genetic traits to a group. But that was then, and we have moved on. In our age, in order to be called racist, all you have to do is voice any sort of generalization on a group. Preferably, it should be one of the groups classed as “oppressed by nature” in Leftist thinking.

I have said time and again that I hate the Arabs (and the Muslims, who are not even a race) not for what they are, but for what they do, and that if they were to stop doing it, to stop their aggression against the one single, tiny Jewish state, I’d stop hating them. To be a racist, truly a racist as in the old and proper sense of the word, would be if I hated them regardless of their actions, for being what they are. But I don’t, and I’d wager most Israeli Jews don’t either. You’re not demanding Israeli Jews stop being racists, your demand is that they turn the other cheek–that they not hate a group of people even though that group shows by both word and deed that they want us gone.

And they want us gone no matter what we do. It is they who are the racists here; and it is to your shame, Pretzelberg, and to the Left’s shame in general, that you defend them.

  40. ziontruth, Arabs and Muslims are NOT just at war with Jews and Israel, Arabs and Muslims are at war with Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, Zoroastrians, Bahais AND fellow Muslims.

Crimes Against Humanity are commited BY Arabs and Muslims ALL OVER THE WORLD.

Racists/Fascist SOCIALISTS of course SUPPORT Racist/Fascist Arabs and Muslims because the BOTH wish to destroy the West.

Racist/Fascist SOCIALISTS view Arabs/Muslims as USEFUL IDIOTS to further the Racist/Fascist SOCIALIST agenda of “revolution”

    and

Rascit/Fascist Arabs/Muslims view SOCIALISTS as USEFUL IDIOTS to further the Racist/Fascist Arab/Muslim agenda of “jihad”.
