The most insidious Zionist tool: Economic development. (Unintended comedy at the Guardian)

Yesterday, June 25, in ‘Harriet Sherwood taken for a ride in Acre’, Hadar Sela effectively fisked Sherwood’s latest report, Israel’s historic city of Acre faces tourist and settler tensions, June 24, and made the following points:

  • The headline of Sherwood’s article declares that “…Acre faces tourist and settler tensions” with the strap line further claiming that “Mixed Arab-Jewish ‘sleeping beauty’ city awakes to gentrification and influx of nationalist-religious Jews”, advancing the specious narrative that rich Jews are buying property in the old city of Acco in a process of ‘gentrification’, thus driving out the poor Arab population.
  • Sherwood manages [by interviewing Arabs with extreme anti-Zionist agendas] to turn a story about the physical and economic regeneration of a depressed city (a dynamic typically understood to be desirable) into a tall tale of quasi ethnic cleansing.
  • Interestingly, while all the activists Sherwood interviews warn of racism and anti-Arab discrimination in Acco’s newer neighbourhoods, even invoking the spectre of ‘settlers coming to town and the ‘Judaisation‘ of the city, not one of them – nor Harriet Sherwood herself –  seems to find anything amiss with the concurrent campaign objecting to  Jews buying property in Acco’s predominately Arab old city.

Indeed, only in the Guardian can economic development in an Israeli city (inside the green line) be framed in a manner suggesting anti-Arab racism, and Jewish malevolence.

Yet, there was one passage in particular which caught my eye and, it seems, shows the shallow and almost comical nature of the narrative advanced in Sherwood’s tale.

“Ahmed Odeh, an Arab member of the city council, claims that about 50 properties in the old city have been acquired by Jewish investors for redevelopment. He says a number of ruses have been employed to encourage Arab residents to give up their properties…to developers. These include straightforward cash offers, often irresistible to poor families; orders for expensive repairs; and eviction if debts are defaulted on.” [Emphasis added]

Simply chilling: The ancient and supremely sinister Semitic ruses of paying cash for a property an owner is willing to sell, and evicting those who default on their mortgages!

Those scheming Zionist financiers, money lenders, and merchants will clearly stop at nothing!

  1. Very good point, Adam. Cif Watch, even now, has to rebut the Guardian’s promulgation of age-old antisemitic lies about Jewish financial chicanery.

But, to go off topic for a moment, the true financial and moral shenanigans, of the ultimate distasteful type, has just been exposed at the Co-Op, that bastion of Jew-hatred about which Hadar Sela wrote so clearly at the end of April:

    http://cifwatch.com/2012/04/30/the-guardian-the-boycotters-press-release-the-co-op-and-the-hamas-link/

It appears, from a Channel 4 Dispatches programme, aired last night, that the Co-op funeral service is a haven for lying salespeople, who stack corpses in various warehouses like television sets and carry them around in lid-less coffins past large blocks of flats.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2163891/Channel-4-Dispatches-funeral-firm-Families-horror-Co-op-funeral-firm-piled-naked-bodies-like-TVs.html?ito=feeds-newsxml

The moral of both these sordid tales for Duvidl is, don’t buy the Guardian and don’t shop at the Co-op.

  2. Any dealings Jews will have with Arabs will be characterized as evil. If a Jew buys from Arabs he is racist, if a Jew refuses to sell to Arabs he is racist, if an Arab refuses to sell a Jew – he is a hero. This is why Israel must close all crossings to Gaza, because any aid or business Israel has with Gaza is an opportunity to demonize. By closing all crossings Israel removes any dealings with Gaza. The EU can send ships with aid, and let Gazans into Europe.

    • Oh for goodness sake no! If Gaza were to be let into Europe then that’ll mean that even more jihadis will be roaming the streets of the UK.

  3. Sela:
… city awakes to gentrification and influx of nationalist-religious Jews”, advancing the specious narrative that rich Jews are buying property in the old city of Acco in a process of ‘gentrification’

What a load of codswallop. If Hadar would remove her bias goggles, she would see that the references to gentrification and influx of nationalist-religious Jews are two separate things – and that’s how the strap line reads.

You are just inventing that “narrative” – either out of genuine confusion and delusion or a conscious attempt to slur the Guardian.

Those scheming Zionist financiers, money lenders, and merchants will clearly stop at nothing!

The money-lenders reference is utterly pathetic, Adam.

Sorry to spoil the party – but there’s zero evidence of anti-Semitism in Sherwood’s article.

    • Sorry to spoil your party, Pretz, but what part of “a number of ruses have been used … including … eviction if debts are defaulted on” is NOT about money-lending?

Sherwood has clearly written an article about the economic regeneration of a poor Israeli city, choosing to focus on the negative views of a few local shit-stirrers, rather than the great benefit such regeneration will bring to the vast majority of the city’s people – Jew and Arab alike.

If I called a Guardian journo and complained that Jews in areas of North London that had previously been centres of Jewish life – e.g. Wembley, Kenton and Kingsbury – had been “chased out” of the areas by unscrupulous Muslims who took the insidious step of buying their homes on the open market, I would expect to be laughed off the phone, not have an interview published about it.

      • Just to spell it out for those who may have less than three brain cells – I am NOT saying that Muslims are unscrupulous or inisidious, nor am I saying that there is anything untoward or negative about the migration of ethnic communities over time. Thanks for listening.

        • No need to spell it out in your case, GoonerEll – but as regards many other posters here, however …

what part of “a number of ruses have been used … including … eviction if debts are defaulted on” is NOT about money-lending?

All of it. Adam just crowbarred in a cheap reference to the old Jewish-money-lenders slur. Sad to see you defending him.

      • “…advancing the specious narrative that rich Jews are buying property in the old city of Acco in a process of ‘gentrification’, thus driving out the poor Arab population.”

Well if you visit Tel Aviv or Jerusalem, most Israelis will tell you how they dislike rich Jews coming from Europe or the USA to buy real estate in Israel even though they spend two weeks in their flats at best, and how it drives away rthe poor Jewish population.

There’s nothing wrong with Ms Sherwdoos’ article.

        • And if you visit the Algarve, you will find the same complaint made against rich Brits, or if you visit North Wales, you will find people complaining about rich English buying holiday homes and driving up property prices…

But these are as irrelevant as your example of Europeans buying holiday homes in Israel. That’s not what Sherwood’s article is about. That is about Israelis choosing to move from one part of Israel to another, or even from one part of an Israeli city to another. It goes on all the time in every country in the world. SO BLOODY WHAT?

European law enshrines a right for all citizens of the EEA to move freely to any member state they choose. Why should Israelis not enjoy this right to move anywhere within Israel they choose (and can afford)?

      • what part of “a number of ruses have been used … including … eviction if debts are defaulted on” is NOT about money-lending?

Still waiting for your own answer to the affirmative.

        • Strange how the first mention of “moneylending” here was from Adam, not Sherwood.

And now you and GoonerEll are also insisting on the term.

          Strange, that …

          • I don’t fixate on the term “money-lending” Pretz, but don’t you find it demonstrative that the perfectly normal practices of purchasing property on the open market and enforcing debts are portrayed as “ruses” to enable Jews to oust Arabs from their property, and that such silly calumnies are reported completely uncritically and unchallenged by Sherwood?

            • I do see your point (also made above) – except that Sherwood is not claiming that in Israel such investors only pressure non-Jews out of their homes.

  4. An accusation has been made– that referring to purchases on the open market and foreclosures of unpaid mortgages as ruses is an appeal to age-old antisemitic stereotypes regarding Jews and money.

Instead of offering a reasoned rebuttal as to why this is not so, realzionist embarks on a newfangled antisemitic calumny, that of the paranoid Jew. (This particular stereotype is popular in antizionist circles, as it is a convenient way sweep threats by Israel’s enemies under the rug.)

One is left with the distinct impression that realzionist cannot rebut this claim of antisemitism with either facts or reasoned argument.

    • “One is left with the distinct impression that realzionist cannot rebut this claim of antisemitism with either facts or reasoned argument.”

      One usually is

    • referring to purchases on the open market and foreclosures of unpaid mortgages as ruses is an appeal to age-old antisemitic stereotypes regarding Jews and money.

If you genuinely believe this, I feel sorry for you.

      • Instead of offering a reasoned rebuttal as to why this is not so, pretzelberg embarks on an ad hominem attack.

One is left with the distinct impression that pretzelberg cannot rebut this claim of antisemitism with either facts or reasoned argument.

  5. Take Gaza lock stock and Barrel, and move it to the UK,one toilet deserves another.

    Sheerwood can organize it.

  6. “Slur the Guardian”

There is no need to slur the Guardian, they do a great job all on their own.

The Guardian is an asylum for nutters like Sheerwood,on one end and Berchmans on the other…….

    • Benorr, I see you’ve still not gotten over your jealousy. Why don’t you try to become a journalist yourself ? Much better than living in frustration!

      • “Benorr, I see you’ve still not gotten over your jealousy. Why don’t you try to become a journalist yourself ? Much better than living in frustration!”

        Nut,
Many of us would make that same recommendation to you.

  7. These unhappy Israeli palestinians, should move to the UK where they can default on their loans and are allowed you get away with it.

  8. If only Mosses didn’t stutter (he heard Canaan instead of Canada) We would have had the Americans as our neighbors instead of these neighbors who have stone age customs…………

  9. Did the Guardian check Sheerwood’s IQ before they employed her………….

    I guess not………………….
