‘CiF’ reader comment of the day: An alternative “refugee camp”

H/T Margie

On Oct. 31, ‘Comment is Free’ published an interesting open thread titled Which leftwing (or rightwing) articles of faith bother you?

There were some interesting ideas among the more than 500 reader comments, but one in particular caught our attention.

In response to an accusation by one evidently avid Harriet Sherwood or Gideon Levy reader that Israel behaves like an apartheid state, there was this:

A bit over-the-top you say?

No, I don’t think so.

In the years after the Holocaust, 1945-1952, between 240-250,000 Jewish displaced persons (DPs) were living in camps and urban centers in Germany, Austria and Italy.  Yet, by 1952 almost all of the DP camps had closed, with over 80,000 settling in the United States, another 20,000 in other nations, and about 136,000 settling in Israel (a huge percentage of Israel’s population at the time).

The Jewish refugee problem came to an end due, in large measure, to the birth of Israel.

Additionally, consider that the overwhelming majority of Jews who were cruelly and systematically expelled from Arab lands between 1947 and 1967 were absorbed by Israel – roughly 600,000 out of 850,000.

Israel’s mission, its raison d’être – as enunciated by Zionist leaders since Herzl, and as practiced by leaders of the Zionist state since its birth – is to be the Guardian of the Jews, a tiny national refuge where Jewish culture will thrive and entry will never be denied.

You don’t hear about “Jewish Refugee Camps” because Israel is the world’s national Jewish refuge – a state which is not only fulfilling its basic mission but, by any measure, succeeding phenomenally at the art of statecraft.

As the CiF commenter above noted, it’s indeed perplexing why the simple Zionist idea is so hard for some people to understand.

  1. Nor would any present day Israelis (or any other Jews in the world) claim that they’re really long lost Ukrainian, Russian, Polish etc ‘refugees’ and that their children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s are too and that not returning to the Ukraine, Russia, Poland etc is merely a short term accident of history soon to be rectified by the ethnic cleansing of all Ukrainians, Russians, Poles. etc, as the ‘Palestinians’ claim.

  2. “‘Which leftwing (or rightwing) articles of faith bother you?”

The leftwing article of faith that rightwing antisemites, rightwing fascists, rightwing world-conquering imperialists, and rightwing religious fanatics are all leftwing and that it is a sign of being rightwing to oppose any of them.

  3. Interesting… it’s the first time I read that American Jews who make aliyah are fleeing “centuries of murder” and “ongoing prejudice”.

I’m sure the American people would love to read that.

    • Nat is correct. Pinayprincess should have add for the sake of the mentally challenged nuts and nats that the Jews fleeing centuries of murder and prejudice from Europe and all of the Muslim countries.

    • No, actually the “first” time was in your comment just now, as neither the cif commenter I cited, nor I, wrote such a thing.

    • “Interesting… it’s the first time I read that American Jews who make aliyah are fleeing “centuries of murder” and “ongoing prejudice”.”

      Citation?

      • CIF Watch quoting PinayPrincess27: ““(Israel) is a national refuge, giant refugee camp, for Jewish people after centuries of murder. In the face of ongoing prejudice.”

It’s the first time I read that American Jews who make aliyah are fleeing “centuries of murder” and “ongoing prejudice”. The American people would probably be surprised to read such a thing. They probably don’t read Mr Levick’s website though.

  4. What pinayprincess27 says is what at one time was well-known and simply taken for granted, before the nay sayers began throwing up such a load of bs as to obscure it.
And what has that bs given us. Nothing good nor constructive.

    • PinayPrincess has spent too much time living in rich countries. Otherwise she would know that Israel looks nothing like a refugee camp. You do not find five-star hotels, brand new malls, nightclubs, universities, international airports or to-notch hospitals in refugee camps.

      • Gaza has a five star hotel and a huge brand new mall, yet the leftist media would have us believe that every single person living in Gaza wears rags and is starving. I think you miss the point of what she was trying to say – that Israel is and should be a safe haven for Jews in their ancestral homeland.
