The intoxicated anti-Zionist rants of Rachel Shabi

Professional Jewish critics of Israel – those commentators who in some manner leverage their connection to Judaism to garner more credibility when launching often hysterical attacks on the Jewish state – are as much defined by their hubris as their political orientation.

Writers like Peter Beinart, Richard Silverstein, or Daniel Levy truly believe they are equipped with a superior intellect and moral understanding, and often suggest – when offering criticism indistinguishable from the rhetoric of the most ardent anti-Zionists – that they are actually engaging in a political form of ‘tough love’.  They are saving Israeli Jews from their own destructive tendencies – “saving Israel,” as it were, “from itself.”

The following is the headline from Rachel Shabi‘s latest ‘Comment is Free’ commentary, opining on recent news regarding European Union guidelines which restrict EU funding for Israeli projects across the green line.

screen shot

Whilst the quote concerning water thrown at a “drunk” was actually from the site of the far-left group Gush Shalom, it was specifically cited by Shabi (in the passage which follows) to illustrate Israel’s collective state of mind in refusing to bow to such international criticism over the construction of homes across the green line.

Israel sees international policy on settlements as simply a guideline or position statement, as opposed to actual law. This escalating sense of hubris over settlement expansion – and getting away with it – is what makes the EU move such a shock for Israel: Gush Shalom, Israel’s peace bloc, likened the EU decision to “a bucket of cold water poured on the head of a drunk”.

Of course such gratuitous pejorative depictions and smears of the Jewish state are nothing new for the frequent ‘Comment is Free’ contributor.

Since 2002 Shabi (born to Iraqi Jewish parents) has published over 100 essays at ‘Comment is Free’ on the topic of Israel, and the themes have been as predictable as they have been facile. Israelis (or Jews as such) are almost never the object of Shabi’s  sympathetic imagination, and she quite excels at imputing to Israel the the very worst motives, regardless of the issue being addressed.

Themes explored by Shabi at ‘Comment is Free’ include the following:

  • Israelis oppressing Palestinians
  • Israelis oppressing its Arab citizens and other minorities
  • Israelis oppressing foreign workers
  • Narratives attempting to deny Israel’s democratic advantages
  • Suggestions that Israel is moving to the extreme right politically

Themes not explored by Shabi:

In addition to downright petty critiques of even the most benign aspects of ordinary Israeli life – such as accusing the state of, in effect, ‘colonising’ hummus – her capacity to twist and turn prose in a way which assigns maximum malice to the Jewish state has few limits.  In one ‘CiF’ essay she mocked Israel’s efforts to unfairly ‘smear’ Hamas as a terrorist group, and once even managed to spin Israeli concerns over the potential rise of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood as evidence of Israeli racism – unmoved, it seems, by the genocidal racism expressed by the group’s spiritual leader, who called for Allah to literally kill every Jew on earth.

An essay she published at CiF last year, commenting on anti-immigrant rhetoric by some Israeli politicians, suggested Israeli parallels with European fascism.  But, perhaps her most insidious accusation was leveled in a piece which appeared shortly after the 2008-09 Gaza War, where she wrote the following:

Likewise, mention the civilian casualties in Gaza and the stock response is to blame Hamas, cast as a bloodthirsty, death-worshipping cult, a terror group that by definition forces Israeli soldiers to kill Palestinian children. One email that did the rounds during the assault was a cartoon depicting two fighters, facing each other. The Israeli fighter aimed his gun with a baby in a pram behind him, shielded; the Palestinian fighter had the baby in front of him, as a shield. What’s astounding is not how often this circular jammed email boxes, but how often Israelis repeat the cartoon set-up as though it were fact, or as though it thereby legitimises the bombing of civilians.

Most Israelis, in other words, seem to have convinced themselves that their own moral superiority somehow sanctions and justifies their own acts of moral repugnance

In addition to her dangerous flirtation with antisemitic narratives of so-called ‘Jewish Supremacism‘, the final passage represents the ultimate projection, and anti-Zionist leftist critics’ most pronounced deceit: their belief that they are uniquely equipped with the penetrating moral intelligence necessary to see through the racism which informs Israelis’ “belief” in their state’s moral advantages over reactionary Islamist extremists.  Jewish anti-Zionist agitprop artists like Shabi, inebriated by post-colonial ideology, fancy themselves more sophisticated and politically enlightened than Israeli Jews, whose obtuse nationalism and ethnocentric loyalties, it is suggested, blind them to the dangerous folly of their path.

Such condescension and visceral animosity towards her fellow Jews, under the guise (of course!) of “progressive” political thought, is as risible as it is repugnant.

  1. Here is something Rachel is talking about. She obviously knows her stuff

Muslim residents of Israel and Palestinians living in East Jerusalem are normally allowed to enter and pray at the al-Aqsa Mosque without restrictions.[76] Israel occasionally prevents certain groups of Muslims from reaching al-Aqsa; the restrictions vary from time to time. At times restrictions have prevented all men under 50 and women under 45 from entering, but married men over 45 are allowed. Sometimes the restrictions are enforced on the occasion of Friday prayers,[77] other times they are over an extended period of time.[77][78][79] Restrictions are most severe for Gazans, followed by restrictions on those from West Bank. Israel states that the restrictions are in place for security reasons.[76]

    • There again we have the off-topic trolling by our resident nuisance: Islamabad’s finest son!
Now seriously troll, did you miss this particular line in your copy-paste routine? you brought it yourself:

Muslim residents of Israel and Palestinians living in East Jerusalem are normally allowed to enter and pray at the al-Aqsa Mosque without restrictions…

Mr. Levick, are we to tolerate this for much longer? There’s so much pro-Taliban nonsense I can hear at one time; it’s a shame, fouling up this blog.
Boot his behind back to Karachi. I hear it’s lovely this time of year(If you can stomach, of course, Islamic extremists at your doorstep).

    • Given that worshippers at al-Aqsa just hung a giant banner of Morsi and called for the downfall of America and England, maybe those security concerns aren’t so stupid?

Meanwhile the rules governing Jewish entry onto the Temple Mount are much more strict– for security reasons no less

    • Dirk the idiot: “Muslim residents of Israel and Palestinians living in East Jerusalem…”

      They are the same thing.
      All Jerusalem residents are Israelis.

      • I’m pretty certain this is not true. Everyone who lives in Israel is a resident and can vote municipally, but although Israeli citizenship is available to those who want it, most arabs have not taken it.

The wiki entry on East Jerusalem says that only five percent have taken citizenship:
“Following the 1967 war, Israel conducted a census in East Jerusalem and granted permanent Israeli residency to those Arab Jerusalemites present at the time of the census. Those not present lost the right to reside in Jerusalem. Jerusalem Palestinians are permitted to apply for Israeli citizenship, provided they meet the requirements for naturalization—such as swearing allegiance to Israel and renouncing all other citizenships—which most of them refuse to do. At the end of 2005, 93% of the Arab population of East Jerusalem had permanent residency and 5% had Israeli citizenship.[51]”

        • You are correct Kolya and Itsik is mistaken, but this is completely irrelevant. The key words in the Wiki article:
Jerusalem Palestinians are permitted to apply for Israeli citizenship, provided they meet the requirements for naturalization—such as swearing allegiance to Israel and renouncing all other citizenships—which most of them refuse to do.
Beeing only residents and not citizens is their own choice.
Anyway the crap of our resident idiot Jew hater whose moniker is changing by the minute isn’t worth to answer.

        • Many Arabs from Jerusalem expressed (in private) their preference to remain “Israelis”, if G.d forbid, East Jerusalem would come under the PA’s authority.

  2. It all depends on the goodwill of the gatekeepers – at least mind you even the gate keepers improve with age – many of them turn left after they retire

    • I don’t know many left wingers who claim that Jews have no right to exist in the Middle East…. Unless you consider anti-Semites who speak as Leftists in order to excuse their hatred of Jews as actually being Left Wingers. As a clue, they are not. They are slime and scum who happen to lie in order to make themselves seem bright and intelligent. You know what I’m talking, Dick. I mean, Dirk.

  3. It all depends on the whim of the gatekeeper. I prefer the retired gatekeepers.
They get better with age. I hear some even turn left when they retire.

    • You prefer the retired gatekeepers? Are you referring to the Jordanian gatekeepers who, having illegally annexed the “West Bank” after 1948 used the Western Wall as a rubbish dump and restricted access such that NO Jews at ANY time could visit it?

Yup – they sound much more your cup of tea.

  4. As much as I’m not a fan of Beinart, I don’t think you can put him in the same category as truly beyond-the-pale people like Silverstein.

  5. Shabi: ““Most Israelis, in other words, seem to have convinced themselves that their own moral superiority somehow sanctions and justifies their own acts of moral repugnance. ”

Now that can be said about every Palestinian political party and faction.
Sadly it can even be said about many Israeli Arab parties if not all.

  6. “her dangerous flirtation with antisemitic”
Flirtation?? She is well past flirtation, she’s smoking a cigarette after sex.

  7. “flirtation with antisemitic narratives ”

The difficulty is that , as these pages show on a daily basis, having political differences can cause screams of anti-Semitic Nazi narrativism. The definition is so huge that you need a lawyer to post in safety.

Shabi is a reporter , no more no less . “” hysterical attacks ???..rhetoric of the most ardent anti-Zionists??? …a political form of ‘tough love’. …?????”” . The article is attempting to place critics of Israel in psychological soap bubbles to avoid the grim truth..that occasionally Israel makes dangerous and stupid decisions.

There are many many reporters …good luck with trying to suggest they all have bent motives for their work

    • Rosco: “…to avoid the grim truth..that occasionally Israel makes dangerous and stupid decisions.” – Like every country in the world.

“…good luck with trying to suggest they all have bent motives for their work.” – No one is trying to do any of the sort. We are pointing out repeated offenders who seem to only focus on the negatives aspects of Israel and Israel alone ignoring the vast amounts of co existance groups within Israeli society that out weigh their Arab counterparts in each and every Arab (or Farsi) country on earth.
I believe reporters who behave like that have an agenda of some sort. Don’t you?

  8. Shabi’s ranting is not hysterical, it is simply bullshit. No EU institution have given any grant to any Israeli entity active beyond the 1948 ceasefire lines in the last five decades so these directives have no significance at all regarding the facts on the ground.
The last political posturing of the bankrupt EU – hungry for Arab oil money – has some much more important consequences:
-They gave a wonderful reason to the Palestinians to harden their – we are not negotiating until our preconditions will be met – stance at days before Kerry’s new attempt to bring the parties to the negotiating table. The timing of their act can’t be incidental – they do everything in their very limited power to prevent any meaningful progress without their own involvement.
-The EU now put the final nail in the coffin of the illusion that they could have any significant role in a future peace process
-They just gave a new evidence to the Israeli public that the good old European knack for determining where Jews can live, at which academic institutions can work and study, which Jews are acceptable for their “tolerance” and which one of them must be deprived from any of their sympathy isn’t dead.
The fact that they can’t bring to themselves to determine whether Hezbollah is a terrorist organisation at the same time speaks for itself in this regard.
-they never considered the possibility to issue similar directives against oil rich countries where killing gays, imprisoning/killing any dissident persons and oppressing women is the norm
The fact that traditional European anti-Semitism (and the new left version of it) won new popular support in most of its member states obviously explains a lot.

    • ” Shabi’s ranting is not hysterical, it is simply bullshit. ”

Excellent assessment. It is heartwarming to see such a post. She is wrong. She is not neurotic ,psychotic, a self hater , a foaming useful idiot. She is wrong giant conspiracy secret handshakes no special membership of hidden clubs . To imply madness, extremism, anti Semitism at every jump on the course when the most obvious explanation goes a begging dilutes the possible effectiveness of this site.

      • You are mistaken (again) Shabi is neurotic ,psychotic, a self hater* , a foaming useful idiot. She is all of the above and exactly as her comrades she can’t excrete anything else on paper only bullshit. Accusing the opponents with secret handshakes and membership in shady organisations is not exactly characteristic of Zionists but their opponents like your fellow travelers as you can learn from the Protocols, the Arab media and any Western “anti-Zionist” sources.
*regarding the self hating – the attribute “self hating” doesn’t express the reality – she doesn’t hate herself but exactly the opposite she simply adores herself and hates the other Jews.

        • “she simply adores herself and hates the other Jews ”

I had indeed mistaken your brief sojourn into reality as permanent . I see you are still accusing others of hatred.. this is disappointing. As a rule people share the same set of emotions , responses to stress, intelligence, resilience etc etc.

Are you guilty of hating an entire ethnic/religious group ? If not …why is Shabi?

          • Affter proving your absolute incompetence in the I/P subject now you are popular psychology bluff too. Keep it up.

          • “Are you guilty of hating an entire ethnic/religious group ? If not …why is Shabi?”
He closes up to NSJasonNickNatzieAlanDirk, now Deborah.

    • Anti-Semitism has won new popular support in most of the EU? Please do go into further detail.

      • You should read the world media pretzel not only the Guardian then maybe you wouldn’t post these laughable inanities of yours.

        • Just show us the evidence of this “popular support” in “most of the EU member states”.

          • A suggestion pretzel before you make an even bigger idiot of yourself. Type please into the search box of your browser this string of characters: “Present European anti-Semitism”. You will get about 4,770,000 results. Try to read the first ten articles.
You will be surprised to learn something about the reality of your own environment.

          • Why should I bother talking to some freak who accuses me of Holocaust denial?

            Fuck off.

            • I accused you with Holocaust denial pretzel? Are you sure you didn’t forget your pills in the morning?

The offending comment has now been deleted, but was part of your post from July 19, 2013 @ 4:22 am.

I find it incredible that you are now denying this!

How about a bit of honesty on your part and actually admitting it?

        • And on top of making the outrageous accusation that I deny the Holocaust, peter the freak still has provided no evidence of anti-Semitism winning “new popular support in most of the EU”.

    • peter:
the good old European knack for determining where Jews can live, at which academic institutions can work and study, which Jews are acceptable for their “tolerance” and which one of them must be deprived from any of their sympathy isn’t dead

Oh please. What a load of hysterical bullshit.

      • Thank you for your well thought counterarguments pretzel. My mistake naturally – in Europe the Jews never were forced to live in designated areas only, their numbers in academy and public life never was limited.

    • Peter: “The timing of their act can’t be incidental – they do everything in their very limited power to prevent any meaningful progress without their own involvement.”

Did anyone smell an arm deal nearing?

  9. Interesting logic we cannot negotiate for peace on the condition that we stop fighting – let us continue fighting while we discuss peace and hopefully by the end there will be no enemy. Good old fashion Colonial logic. Nothing wrong with it in a perverse sort of way.

The reality is that the Palestinians have no serious partner for peace. Israel does not want to say what its borders are or even where is Palestine. All we hear is rantings.

Peace process is a dead duck. Everybody knows that. Some of us think this is the last stand of the colonials and is about to fall and in this period it is likely to be more lethal than it has ever been.

    • An other expert on the subject wants to distribute the ignorance, stupidity and evil nature of her kind. Thank you for your contribution Ms. Watkins proving who are the real supporters of the Palestinians.

    • “Some of us think this is the last stand of the colonials and is about to fall and in this period it is likely to be more lethal than it has ever been.”

Then you are going to be disappointed. It’s the Arab world that is in deep doo-doo. Look at Syria, Look at Egypt, Look at Lebanon and Libya. And look at what Islamic terrorism has done to turn ordinary people in the west against Muslims.

Meanwhile Israel has discovered massive natural resources that have even got the Russians interested. I think you will see Israel becoming stronger, while her enemies lose support and descend into chaos and carnage.

    • I’ve been around a number of dipshits in my life, so let me try to figure this out. The good guys are the ones shooting missiles, blowing up cafeterias, and kidnapping Israelis for 5 years with no outside contact. The bad guys are the ones who have made 3 state offers over the past 13 years.

      And you are serious.

  10. Shabi’s articles are a waste of space. Never shows the slightest bit of sympathy for the Israeli perspective(s).

  11. Peterhungarian how would you feel about swearing allegiance to the Third Reich – I would not have been very comfortable. It is even worse to swear allegiance implicitly agreeing my house is not mine.

  12. what happened to THAT berchmans, the one who used to say ‘ here’s to all the lovely muslims I have met in my life ‘ ad nauseam. was he just an archetypical lefty patronising prat who just existed as a though form to remind the world the dangers of spending too long reading CIF and swigging whiskey ? has he seen the errors of his ways or has he been gang banged by a bunch of bearded lovely muslims ? I must say I don’t lie awake wondering what happened to THAT b.

  13. Kouf who said the IDF are the good guys they are the bad guys that shoot missiles everywhere. I hear they have fired some into Syria using submarines some suggest. Last year they fired quite a few into Gaza killings hundreds of Palestinians, including children and women.

    • Last year they fired quite a few into Gaza killings hundreds of Palestinians, including children and women.
This is nothing Ms. Watts. The IDF put poison into the wells of Gaza, raped all virgins, killed all children and sold their organs for implant plus used their blood in their Passover matzos. The profit went to financing the the Council of the Elders of Zion secret activities and our main project – the development of the thought control rays generator in order to neutralize your kind of heroic warriors of human rights.
I suggest you to cover your head with a minimum ten inch thick lead cap, at the moment this is the only safe protection. Be careful – the Zionists are out to get you…

        • Sorry cba I left you a lot of other sins of our Zionists, mentioned only the most well known of our devilish acts. Feel free to continue, you will have miles of long distance to cover…

    • Well, I heard they poison wells and use Palestinian children’s blood to bake matzah. And they control the banks and the media. And they’re really lizards dressed up to look like human beings.

  14. Peterthehungarian – Everybody knows what happened last November we all saw it on our boxes as hundreds of Palestinians were killed because of the bombing of Gaza by the IDF. Nobody knows anything about poisoning of the water by the IDF. You are just an anti-Semite trying to blacken Jewish peoples character. You anti-Semite.

  15. If you think the killings are bad in Syria, wait till the Palestinians don’t have a fence and can walk up to a Jew and put a knife right in his gut.
Jerusalem Terror Victim: “I said ‘Shema Yisrael'”
Dept. Minister of Religious Affairs Rabbi Eli Ben-Dahan visits Tisha B’Av stabbing victim in hospital, vows to fix security situation
    David Lev and Ari Soffer

Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs Eli Ben Dahan, along with members of the Bayit Yehudi party, on Thursday visited with a hareidi man who was stabbed by Arabs in a terror attack that took place on Tisha B’Av. The 33 year old man is still hospitalized in moderate condition, suffering from stab wounds to the chest and back.

The victim of the attack was set upon by Arab attackers as he walked near the Damascus Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem. At least two Arabs attacked him, the victim told Ben Dahan. They are still at large.

Ben Dahan, who visited the victim in Shaare Tzedek Hospital. where he is to remain at least through the weekend, wished him well, saying,

“It is impossible to allow an attack like this in a civilized country. Day after day we are forced to deal with horrible terror attacks. It starts with Arab ‘price tag’ attacks at the Machpelah Cave in Hevron, in which Arabs tear down mezuzot and spray graffiti, as occurred recently, and goes on to a stabbing attack at the Damascus Gate.”

    Ben-Dahan continued,

“And for a ‘special bonus, we get an unrealistic statement from the European Union saying they will boycott us, which just encourages the terrorists.”

According to Ben Dahan, “we must set things right in this country, and I promise that I and members of Bayit Yehudi will do what is needed to restore quiet to the citizens of Israel.”

    “I said ‘Shema Yisrael'”

Describing his experience, the victim recalled:

“The terrorist stuck the knife in me and turned it around. I said ‘Shema Yisrael’ and other prayers one says” when they think they are about to die.

“I walked up the stairs and by mistake called the police instead of Magen David Adom. I saw a patrol and they tended to my wounds right away. All the Arabs in the area just stopped and stared, and no one was interested in what happened to me,” he added.

    Growing Arab violence

The attack in question was only latest in a wave of violent acts carried out by Arabs in Jerusalem against local Jews.

The same night as the stabbing, at the same location, Arab rioters pelted the cars of Jewish residents. A shocking video of the violence was posted yesterday by Arutz Sheva, but went unreported by other mainstream news outlets.

The next morning, in the Abu Tor neighbourhood of the capital, Jewish residents awoke to find their car tires slashed in an apparent nationalistically-motivated attack.

  16. It figures Rachel takes a Gush Shalom quote.

Even during Arafat’s homicide bombing campaign against Israeli civilians, Uri Avnery would do everything to support this mass murderer Arafat.

Gush Shalom also went to the city to protect the Palestinians behind the Fogel massacre 2 years ago.
Israeli Left’s Solidarity with Itamar Killers
Before the identity of the murderers from Awarta was revealed, leftists visited the village and denounced search of killer’s home as a “pogrom.”

Uri Avnery also supported the Arafat ordered Kibbutz Metzer massacre in 2002
Uri wrote an article called revenge of a child in Dec 2002.

This was about the terrorist incident where a Palestinian gunmen machine gunned an Israeli mother and her 2 sons at Kibbutz Metzer in 2002. The Israeli mother tried to shield her sons, but it was to no avail, the Palestinian terrorists massacred all 3 of them. Uri Avnery writes in this article, we should understand why Palestinians massacre Israeli woman and children. He basically says, we should make excuses for Arab atrocities.
    Avnery sounds like a Nazi.

Avnery also supported the Maxim restaurant suicide bombing on October 4, 2003.
Averny like the Kibbutz Metzner massacre again makes excuses for Hanadi Jaradat, The Palestinian bomber who killed 21 innocent people and maimed dozens
    for life.

It should be noted, Hamas and Fatah are glorifying this terrorist Hanadi Jaradat.
Which proves more and more how Israel is dealing with Islamic evil.

Hamas celebrates anniversary of Haifa restaurant bombing
Hamas newspaper Palestine Times has a featured article celebrating the ten year anniversary of the bombing of the Arab-owned Matza restaurant in Haifa, that killed 16 Israeli civilians. The article includes photos of the bomber as well as of the devastation to the restaurant, whose roof collapsed from the force of the explosion.
Arab Lawyers Union Honors Terrorist who Killed 21 Israelis in Haifa
    OCTOBER 18, 2012

The Palestine Committee of the Arab Lawyers Union recently bestowed its “highest honor” on female suicide bomber Hanadi Jaradat, who killed 21 Israelis in a 2003 attack on Maxim’s restaurant in Haifa, Palestinian Media Watch reported on its website here.
Jaradat, who worked as a lawyer, also injured 51 Israelis in her bombing of Maxim’s. The lawyers union “created the ‘Martyr Hanadi Jaradat plaque of honor’” for her, according to an Oct 14 report in the Palestinian daily publication Al-Ayyam.
A delegation “conveyed to the family of Martyr Jaradat the good wishes of the head of the Union, Mr. Omar Al-Zayn… and also emphasized the pride of the Arab Lawyers Union for what their daughter had done in defense of Palestine and the nation.”

  17. Camera asks a good question. Where’s the coverage of Abbas racist hate media.
Rachel Shabi doesn’t like to talk about this.
    July 10, 2013
Where’s the Coverage? Palestinian TV Broadcasts Jew-Hating Children… Again

On July 3rd, official Palestinian Authority (PA) television broadcast two adorable little girls reciting a poem. Nice? Not really. Here are some of the verses, as translated and posted by Palestinian Media Watch:

Oh, you who murdered Allah’s pious prophets [Jews in Islamic tradition]
Oh, you who were brought up on spilling blood
You have been condemned to humiliation and hardship.
Oh Sons of Zion, oh most evil among creations
    Oh barbaric monkeys, wretched pigs
This is not an isolated incident. Palestinian Media Watch has documented numerous examples of similar hate speech by children in PA and Fatah (the party of PA leaders) media.

A quick search of Google news turned up only five stories about this shameful episode, and those only in the Israeli press and some specialty media. However, if you type “Israel” into a Google news search you turn up 46,000,000 stories, including a New York Times review of an Israeli movie and an ABC News story about investors buying a bankrupt Israeli electric car company. Is this not at least as newsworthy?

By broadcasting these sentiments on its official television station, it is clear the Palestinian Authority endorses the sentiments in the poem. How difficult will it be to achieve a peaceful settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict when these attitudes are taught to children?:

Jerusalem vomits from within it your impurity
Because Jerusalem, you impure ones, is pious, immaculate

And Jerusalem, you who are filth, is clean and pure.
    I do not fear barbarity.
As long as my heart is my Quran and my city
As long as I have my arm and my stones
As long as I am free and do not barter my cause
I will not fear your throngs
I will not fear the rifle.
Young minds poisoned with hatred and bigotry. Children encouraged to embrace violence. And yet… Where’s the coverage?

  18. The basis for hate
The Israeli negotiation team presented a new map at the Taba Summit in Taba, Egypt in January 2001. The proposition removed the “temporarily Israeli controlled” areas, and the Palestinian side accepted this as a basis for further negotiation. With Israeli elections looming the talks ended without an agreement but the two sides issued a joint statement attesting to the progress they had made: “The sides declare that they have never been closer to reaching an agreement and it is thus our shared belief that the remaining gaps could be bridged with the resumption of negotiations following the Israeli elections.” The following month the Likud party candidate Ariel Sharon defeated Ehud Barak in the Israeli elections and was elected as Israeli prime minister on 7 February 2001. Sharon’s new government chose not to resume the high-level talks.[40]

  19. It was self evident that NSDeborahNickNatzieJimJasonAlanIsmail will post at the bottom.
The tactic of this nazi doesn`t work.

  20. Deborah Watkins ofcourse they chose not to negotiate when Arafat was ordering Israeli buses full of civilians to be blown up.
    Did Israel kill Yasser Arafat?
And if so, was it justified?
    Nov 26, 2012

Did Israel kill Yasser Arafat? That is the question being discussed as the Palestinian Authority exhumes his body this week for French prosecutors investigating his death. This follows the announcement by a Swiss institute that they found remnants of the poison polonium on Arafat’s clothes.

However, the more fundamental questions are why would Israel have wanted to kill Arafat and would it have been justified. The assessment must be based on the objective data as to Arafat’s role at the time. Was he just a political leader or was he also an archterrorist leading the most systematic and deadly terror war that Israel ever faced? Yasser Arafat died in November 2004 after four years of a PA terror campaign, also called the second intifada. One thousand Israelis had already been murdered in attacks coming from PA territory under Arafat’s leadership.

Was Arafat directing this terror campaign? If so, he would belong in the same category as terror leaders like Osama bin Laden and Hamas leader Ahmad Yassin, who were killed by the US and Israel respectively, as measures in the war on terror being fought by democracies.

Evidence abounds that Arafat was the force behind the terror war against Israel. First, the PA actively promoted terror and glorified terror through the structures under Arafat’s control.

PA-owned official TV was used repeatedly to call for killing Jews in the name of Islam.

For example, Ahmed Yusuf Abu Halabiah, a Palestinian religious leader, preached on PA TV: “The Jews are the Jews … it is necessary to slaughter them and murder them, according to the words of Allah … It is forbidden to have mercy in your hearts for the Jews in any place and in any land … Any place that you meet them – kill them … Have no mercy on the Jews, murder them everywhere.” (PA TV, October 13, 2000) Likewise PA cleric Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Madi preached: “I was delighted when a youth said to me: ‘Oh, Sheikh, I am 14 years old, I have four more years, and then I will blow myself up among Allah’s enemies’ … We blow them up in Hadera, we blow them up in Tel Aviv and in Netanya … they will not be deterred except by the color of the blood of their filthy people. They will not be deterred unless we blow ourselves up willingly and voluntarily among them.” (PA TV, August 3, 2001) Then as now, PA TV was the official PA mouthpiece and controlled by the PA leadership.

It is impossible that ongoing directives like these to kill Israelis/Jews could have been expressed regularly for four years unless Arafat wanted it.

A second indicator that Arafat supported the killings was the way the PA honored those who succeeded in killing Israelis, including suicide bombers. For example, PA TV repeatedly broadcast a song-tribute honoring Wafa Idris, the first female suicide bomber, who killed one and wounded more than 150 Israelis: “My sister Wafa … Oh the heartbeat of pride, Oh blossom who was on earth and is now in Heaven. Allah Akbar! [Allah is greater] … you chose Martyrdom. In death you have brought life to the aspiration.”

The PA leaders actively gave their stamp of approval for murders that were committed by all the various terror organizations. In 2003, the PA Ministry of Education held the Abd al-Baset Udeh football tournament for 14-year-olds, named after the suicide terrorist who killed 31 at the Passover celebration in Netanya. Each team in the tournament was named after a different terrorist. (Al-Hayat Al- Jadida January 21, 2003) Another example was when the PA held a football tournament, sponsored by the top PA leadership including Arafat, Saeb Erekat, the Mufti, the minister of sport and others. The event honored the “Martyrs of the Palestinian National Struggle” and the teams were named after 24 “martyrs,” including: Hamas bomb-maker Yahya Ayyash; head of the terrorist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine Abu Ali Mustafa; Fatah’s Dalal Mughrabi, whose bus hijacking killed 37, and 21 other “martyrs.”

Had the PA not supported suicide terror and not wanted to encourage more terror, as some Arafat apologists claim, these sermons inciting murder and genocide would not have been preached on official PA TV by PA clerics, suicide bombers like Idris would not have been honored by official PA TV, and sporting events glorifying terrorists like Udeh would not have been held by the PA Ministry of Education. And these are only representative examples among many.

More evidence that Arafat and the PA were actively directing the terror war is found in the testimonies of PA leaders themselves, both during the campaign and since its conclusion.

In 2002, the year 452 Israelis were murdered by Palestinian terror, Mazen Izzadin, deputy director of PA National Education, said proudly on PA TV that Arafat was directing the entire campaign: “The Al-Aqsa intifada – if we want to be truthful and open, history will reveal one day – that it [the intifada] and all its directives belong to the President and Supreme Commander Yasser Arafat.” (PA TV, May 28, 2002) Ashraf al-Ajrami, former PA minister of prisoners, likewise credited Arafat with being responsible for the terror war: “The master of resistance is, without doubt … Yasser Arafat. Even this intifada, whose flag Hamas has tried to wave unjustly, forcibly, falsely and fraudulently – that flag belongs to Yasser Arafat alone … The greatest number of [Palestinian] prisoners is from the [PA] security forces [under Arafat]. They are the ones who bore arms and carried out the greatest and most important [military] operations.”

(PA TV June 29, 2009) More than once, PA leaders have emphasized Arafat’s duplicitous strategy of condemning the terror as part of a facade to please the West and conceal his responsibility and at the same time orchestrate it and encourage Palestinian terror.

Sultan Abu al-Einein, currently an advisor to PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas, explained: “Yasser Arafat used to condemn martyrdom operations [i.e., suicide attacks]. He used to condemn these operations in very severe terms, but at the same time, it is clearly determined that the martyr Yasser Arafat financed these military operations.” (Al-Quds TV, April 6, 2009) Muhammad Dahlan, then member of the Fatah Central Committee, also highlighted Arafat’s successful deception strategy: “Arafat would condemn [military] operations [i.e., terror attacks] by day while at night he would do honorable things. I don’t want to say any more about this.” (PA TV, July 22, 2009) Even the current PA chairman, Mahmoud Abbas, has admitted publicly that Arafat and the Palestinian Authority were the ones who ordered the killings. During a PA TV interview, Abbas argued for the release of all terrorists in Israeli prisons, saying: “I demand [the release of] prisoners because they are human beings, who did what we, we, ordered them to do. We – the [Palestinian] Authority. They should not be punished while we sit at one table negotiating. This is war. One [i.e., Israel] ordered a soldier to kill, and I ordered my son, brother, or others, to carry out the duty of resistance. This person killed and the other person killed.” (PA TV, February 14, 2005) Significantly, Abbas admitted that it was “we” – the PA led by Arafat – who had given the orders to kill. The killers according to Abbas were merely following orders, and “did what we, we, ordered them to do.”

Arafat, according to Abbas himself, had instructed his people that killing Israelis, even civilians, was their “duty of resistance.”

So was Arafat the leader of the terror war responsible for the murder of over 1,000 Israeli civilians. His religious leaders called to kill Jews. His social frameworks and media glorified those who succeeded in murdering Israelis. Abbas said Arafat “ordered them… to kill” and al-Einein said Arafat “condemned” and “financed” the same suicide bombings.

In fact, the people closest to Arafat and the current internal Palestinian narrative, unanimously credit Arafat with the decision to start the terror war and the overall responsibility for the killings.

Did Israel kill Arafat? We may never know, but that is not the critical question. What is important is that Arafat’s role as the terror leader made him no different than the other terrorists who pulled the triggers or detonated suicide belts. The year was 2004. Over 1,000 Israelis had already been murdered under Arafat’s guidance and direction. Arafat wasn’t just a political leader during a conflict; he was leading a terror war that was targeting and murdering civilians at every opportunity.

There was ample justification if Israel had wanted to kill him.

Maslama Thabet, leader of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades admits all orders to kill Israeli civilians comes from Arafat.
On the same day in 1993 on which Yasser Arafat signed the Declaration of Principles on the White House lawn, he spoke the following words on Jordan TV:
“Since we cannot defeat Israel in war we do this in stages. We take any and every territory that we can of Palestine, and establish a sovereignty there, and we use it as a springboard to take more. When the time comes, we can get the Arab nations to join us for the final blow against Israel.”
Arafat’s Stockholm speech in 1996 to Arab diplomats
“The Impending Total Collapse of Israel,” Stockholm, Sweden.
Arafat said that the PLO plans “to eliminate the State of Israel and establish a purely Palestinian State. We will make life unbearable for Jews by psychological warfare and population explosion; Jews won’t want to live among us Arabs.”
Arafat said: “I have no use for Jews..they are and remain Jews! We now need all the help we can get from you in our battle for a united Palestine under total Arab-Muslim domination!”

  22. Incidentally, Barry you are very knowledgeable about who gives orders to kill. Can you tell us who ordered to bomb Gaza in 2011 and than in 2008/2009.

I know why they did it .It was because of those Palestinians who killed thousands of Israelis in 2008/09 and than in 2012 – The question who gave the orders to kill Palestinians in Gaza?

    • “I know why they did it .It was because of those Palestinians who killed thousands of Israelis in 2008/09 and than in 2012 – The question who gave the orders to kill Palestinians in Gaza?”

      Dear Rob/Dopey/Grumpy/Sneezy/Sleepy/Tosser/et al.
If as you claim you know ‘why they did it.’ why is it all-knowing one that you do not know who, allegedly, gave the orders?
Is it your crystal ball or just you that is cracked?

Incidentally, Barry you are very knowledgeable about who gives orders to kill. Can you tell us who ordered to bomb Gaza in 2011 and than in 2008/2009.

I have a suggestion for Gazan idiots

Stop shooting rockets, anti-tank arms into Israel at civilians and the IDF. Then there will be nothing to retaliate.

If Mexico was firing thousands of missiles at America, how do you think America would respond?

  24. Barry is that why the Americans are building a wall between Mexico and America. I understand, it is alleged, the Americans also annexed part of Mexico to stop the Mexicans throwing missiles into America. However, it is not clear what happened first the annexation or the missiles. The Zionist view is that Mexicans do not exist. However, many in the world think that the Zionist view is delusional.

    • “The Zionist view is that Mexicans do not exist”

      Really Rob/Sneezy/Sleazy/Dopey/Drek et al
Probably that sentence is a weak and very poor attempt on your part at irony.
The only problem is that the word ‘irony’ is derived from the Greek word for “simulated ignorance”, and as is obvious from your posts, in your multiple identities, your ignorance is definitely not simulated. It is genuine, along with your stupidity and penchant for lying.

  25. And Gerald, Zionism is derived from racism and fascism. I suppose, you do know simulated ignorance is exactly the opposite of ignorance. I am your exact opposite.

    • “I suppose, you do know simulated ignorance is exactly the opposite of ignorance”

Yes Rob/Dopey/Sleazy/Tosser et al, I do know. To see the difference between ‘simulated ignorance’ and ‘genuine ignorance’ all one has to do is to read your posts. What a pity you are unable to read and comprehend the English language. But thank you for proving my point.

      “I am your exact opposite.”
Indeed you are Rob/Dorothy/Straw Man/Dick Head et al.
