CiF Watch prompts correction to extremely misleading Livni quote at ‘Comment is Free’

Yesterday, we posted about a selectively edited quote in a Nov. 26 essay at ‘Comment is Free’ by an anti-Zionist Jew named Michael Brull.

We noted that the highly misleading quote – from comments made by Tzipi Livni in 2007 during negotiations with the Palestinians – was previously published at the Guardian during their special series in 2011 known as the “Palestine Papers”, and then soon corrected by the paper’s editors after a fury of complaints.

Here’s the incomplete quote used by Brull:

Livni knows perfectly well why Israel builds settlements. In another candid moment, she explained that “the Israel policy is to take more and more land day after day and that at the end of the day we’ll say that it is impossible we already have the land and cannot create the state.”

Now, here’s the full quote which, as you’ll see, indicates that Livni was certainly NOT admitting that “Israeli policy is to take more and more land” in order to prevent a new Palestinian state from being created, but was merely characterizing what she believed was the Palestinian view on settlements:

I understand the sentiments of the Palestinians when they see the settlements being built. The meaning from the Palestinian perspective is that Israel takes more land, that the Palestinian state will be impossible, the Israel policy is to take more and more land day after day and that at the end of the day we’ll say that it is impossible, we already have the land and cannot create the state.”

A couple of hours after we contacted Guardian editors – reminding them that they made a correction to a similar “error” two years ago – Brull’s piece was amended, and the following now appears at the bottom of the essay:

  1. Another victory for CIFWatch prompted by ol’ fashioned detective work and accuracy. The stage is set for this site to become a proper weapon against British hypocrisy once its supporters stop calling anyone who disagrees with them “anti semities”

    • Once again ‘Household name’ you attempt to divert this site away from the purpose it was created for.
The purpose of this site is clearly written at the top of the page, which part of the statement of purpose do you fail to understand?

You might, mistakenly, believe that your attempts to divert this site away from its purpose is a clever strategy. But it is very clear what you are attempting to do. You made your intentions very clear when you wrote in the ‘Harriet Sherwood’ thread in your post of NOVEMBER 25, 2013 @ 5:27AM
“If it had not been for the US/UK astonishing destruction of Iraq and Libya, the IDF would be seen in a different light . Instead the IDF can simply carry on with its business safe in the knowledge that their big brother’s extremes of brutality makes their deeds look benign in comparison”

You don’t give a damn about ‘British hypocrisy’ or the activities of the USA/UK armed forces you only want to stop the exposure of The Guardian and divert attention so that you can attack the IDF, other than in your current snide fashion.

Now as I’ve challenged you before if you feel so strongly about ‘British hypocrisy’ why don’t you start your own website/blog?

      • Gerald talking about hypocrisy as if it were an alien concept to him personally! Nice.

This is the poster who said I had no right to even express an opinion on the security of a country I do not reside in – while Gezza does precisely that all the time!

        • pretzelberg why don’t you try reading other people’s posts before you rush in beating your chest like a drunken bandit.

If you did read them first then respond to their actual content rather than what you think is in them. You just MIGHT seem slightly less thick than nature made you.

          • Why don’t you stop being a hypocrite and telling people whether or not they are entitled to express an opinion?

Thank you for your unsolicited advice, but take it and shove it. And as it is getting close to Christmas wrap it in some holly first!

            Your words – not mine.

            • pretzelberg I stand by the quote “Thank you for your unsolicited advice, but take it and shove it. And as it is getting close to Christmas wrap it in some holly first!”

You are really boring with your pathetic whingeing.
Have you something to contribute to the topics of the threads, or is your only concern to ‘defend your honour’ ?

              • Have you something to contribute to the topics of the threads.

That’s a cheek, coming from you!

So … nothing to say about your rank hypocrisy? Why are you still posting on this website?

        • We get it – you don’t respect Gerald, and he doesn’t respect you. Please, please, please move on from this, Pretz.

      • “You don’t give a damn about ‘British hypocrisy’ or the activities of the USA/UK armed forces ”

Funny you say that given I normally post my disgust about British hypocrisy every single post . I will repeat it now just to dot the i for you. For British writers to attack Israel given our history is hilarious. In living memory we controlled a quarter of the world with extremes of violence that make the treatment of Palestinians look enlightened and caring.

However it is our more recent thuggery to which I take particular offence . Yes the recent activities of the IDF can be criticised… but given that the writer Blum has calculated that 5 million Iraqis are either dead, widowed ,disabled ,bereaved, orphaned or missing surely it is the UK/US axis that should be in the dock first?

        • ‘Household name’ you should have completed the sentence which is, “..you only want to stop the exposure of The Guardian and divert attention so that you can attack the IDF, other than in your current snide fashion.”

I can see that you have the same difficulty understanding the content of posts as the other member of the ‘Axis of Stupidity’ pretzelberg.

Do you, both, genuinely have difficulty understanding what is written or is it wilful in a pathetic attempt to twist things to suit your own agendas?

          • It’s you who has difficulty understanding the content of posts – not least your own, i.e. nobody has the right to express an opinion on another country’s internal matters.

Your posts comprise a “pathetic attempt to twist things to suit your own agendas” indeed!

Why don’t you follow your own words and “shove it” – and leave this website for good?

            • Contrary to my previous decision to not address your idiotic burbling I can’t resist now. Are you really feeling free to attempt prescribing who is worth to post on this site and who isn’t? Didn’t you realize that you are the laughing stock here with your clueless, ignorant and self-righteous moralizing and pontificating? You who always complain about your brownie points didn’t realize that your popularity among the readers is extremely low? Have you ever contemplated that exactly you should take your stuff to anywhere else? No I don’t think so pretzel – you don’t – for this you should have had the minimal ability to soul-searching what clearly you don’t have at all. I’m looking forward to read your continuing bullshit preaching to the Jews what is anti-semitism and what is not, why banning circumcision and kosher slaughter is not anti-semitic, why the Guardian is not an anti-semitic rag, why in Europe everything is good and dandy for the Jews and your incessant personal abuse of others without the slightest attempt to arguing the subjects of the articles itself.

              • Yes, my “popularity among the readers is extremely low”. Considering the kind of bigoted and arrogant lowlifes that populate this place BTL, I’m obviously doing something right.

You refer to my “incessant personal abuse of others”??
Just look at the amount of verbal abuse in just that last post of yours!
You – the person who called me a Holocaust denier!

I am suggesting that Gerald leave the site because of his own assertion that people do not have the right to comment on other countries’ security matters.
Is it really that difficult to understand??

without the slightest attempt to arguing the subjects of the articles itself.

That’s absolute bullshit – and you know it.
(this present thread is very much an exception)

And you call me a laughing stock? Hilarious!

                • Considering the kind of bigoted and arrogant lowlifes that populate this place BTL,
Really? Bigoted and arrogant lowlifes populating Cifwatch? Then what the f*ck are you doing here? Trolling?

                • “I am suggesting that Gerald leave the site..”

When you become Managing Editor of this site pretzelberg then I will.

But isn’t it strange that on a thread that shows that Adam has managed to correct a quotation on Comment is Free, all you want to do is indulge your ‘hurt feelings’ in personal abuse.

                • Congratulations to the pretzel-chaim-pesach duo to their beautiful finding each other as spiritual brothers.
Look, Peter and others here are still living in the 30s. And I’m not sure which side they are on.
You are not sure Chaim? It is very clear – I’m on the opposite side of yours – I’m against the Jew-hating wannabe kapos of your kind.

                • Great, I’ve always opposed Nazis and the Black Shirts. Excellent.
Have you opposed them? Really? Maybe they didn’t pay you enough? Or there were no openings in the kapo department?

                • You tell me, you’d probably be a good recruiting sergeant for them.
Says the Jew-hater who supports the boycotts of Jews, who posts disgusting smears about Israel, who spreads totally transparent malevolent lies about Israelis… Very good Chaim, please keep it up posting, justifying everything Israel stands for.

                • @ peterthehungarian

You talk of a “pretzel-chaim-pesach duo” and “beautiful finding each other as spiritual brothers”.

Yet again – pathetically and predictably – you are making juvenile shit up.

You really know no shame, do you?

  2. Good catch, Adam. I guess the Guardian still has some shame over its descent into anti-Israel propaganda.

Ain’t the Internet a wonderful thing? In the old days we would have to write a letter to the Editor, which would probably be thrown away or wait for ages for a response to a complaint to a press ombudsman. The best result would generally be a two-line acknowledgement in small print at the bottom of page three a week or two later.

Now you’ve managed to get them to admit their propaganda in the same article and soon after it appeared on their site. Great work.
