David Ward MP – Jews, money and power

Cross posted by Mark Gardner at the CST

Jews, money and power is a well-worn antisemitic trinity.

So, what possessed David Ward MP to send this tweet on 15th November?

That Roma are marginalised is not in question. If David Ward MP wishes they had a better reputation, or better representation, then let him say so: but this tweet appears to say far more about the Board of Deputies than it does about marginalised Roma.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews is the representative body of British Jews. It does its job as best it can, and has done so since 1760. It is, in mundane reality, neither awash with money, nor all-powerful. Ward is an MP for Bradford. There are very few Jews in Bradford, but very many Muslims. Taken at face value, the Board would basically be an irrelevancy for both David Ward and his constituents.

Nevertheless, this kind of thinking, the well-worn drawing together of Jews, money and power, betrays Jews, Muslims and Ward’s own Liberal Democrat Party. It also betrays Ward, but only in the sense of revealing how he thinks, or what he may think appeals to his Muslim constituents.

David Ward has, in under a year, gone from relative obscurity to becoming a one man wrecking ball for the reputation of his party. (For brief example, see here; and see here for his attending a meeting on November 4th that disgraced Parliament.)

The Liberal Democrats must have thought that Jenny Tonge’s much awaited exit had put all of this aggravation and nonsense behind them. Unfortunately, Ward has swiftly occupied the space vacated by Tonge’s departure; and, once again, the Jewish community is left dismayed by the antisemitic resonance of statements made by a Liberal Democrat MP.

The last time we got here with Ward, the party leadership suspended him, and failed in attempts to educate him on the subject of antisemitism and Jewish sensitivities. Then, at the recent Liberal Democrat party conference in Glasgow, Ward attended an open meeting of the Liberal Democrat Friends of Israel group, entitled,

Crossing the line: Israel, Palestine, language and anti-Semitism

Before it, he had tweeted:

looking forward to LDFI event tonight on use of sensitive language

On behalf of CST, I spoke at the meeting, as did Alistair Carmichael MP, Maajid Nawaz and Lesley Klaff.

David Ward and a colleague sat near the front. Ward appeared to be paying very close attention, his face a scowl of concentration as he scribbled furiously throughout. I tried to direct my explanation of contemporary antisemitism and anti-Zionism straight at him, including:

If I think that someone’s made an antisemitic remark, or that the accusations they make against Israel or Zionists sound just like an update of older antisemitism, with the word Zionist used where the word Jew used to be, then I’m not saying that that person hates every single Jew in the world…I’m just saying that they’ve made an antisemitic remark. The context surrounding that remark, and how they react to my perception of what they’ve said, how other people react in accordance with all of that – now that’s important to me.

Because that’s the basics of how racism works. Its a form of political violence. It feeds off loose language and stereotypes. If the media or the politicians or activist groups run anti-immigrant or anti-Muslim or anti-black scare stories, then attacks on those people increase. You know that, we all know that and its no different with Jews. If you don’t care about the anti-Jewish aspect of racism, or about the feelings of Jews as victims, then it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re a dyed in the wool antisemite, but it certainly makes you part of the problem.

At the very least, David Ward MP is certainly part of the problem.

  1. Back in the 1980’s I was a Lib Dem County Councillor having been a founder member of the SDP. I refused to stand for re-election because, amongst other things, the party had begun to accept any strategy for obtaining votes. In Ward’s case he has a 365 majority over Labour in a constituency with a very large Muslim community and virtually no Jews. He is desperate to retain his seat and doesn’t care what he says if he feels it will protect his status as the local MP. What we should do is to assist the Labour campaign to unseat him next time…….provided of course that the Labour candidate is refraining from similar comments to Ward’s outbursts this year.

  2. …provided of course that the Labour candidate is refraining from similar comments to Ward’s outbursts this year.
As you said there is a very large Muslim community and virtually no Jews in this constituency. The probability that any other candidate would refrain from similar behavior is nil, or s/he wouldn’t have the chance of a snowball in hell.

    • Well Peter, one lives in hope. That said I rather share your cynicism. What a sad reflection on British political standards this is. It is difficult to know which is worse; this sort of dishonesty or the expenses scandal. It is exactly this sort of thing that has reduced the status of an MP to a virtual irrelevance. We should regret that such standards cause the reputations of decent, honest and upstanding politicians to be tarred with the same brush.

    • The probability that any other candidate would refrain from similar behavior is nil, or s/he wouldn’t have the chance of a snowball in hell.

      What a ridiculous statement.

      • What a ridiculous statement
Excellent argument pretzel, exactly what we are used to read from you.

        • This is a good article and proves what lengths people will go to get elected. Galloway pretending to become a Muslim is another example and also hilarious

This is a site that examines the exact words people use and sometimes it is very effective. It is not so when people start claiming Labour MPs cannot get elected unless they attack Jews .

I have to ask…have you ever been here? It is not a great country occasionally violent, biased , greedy and ill divided. But this is not 30s Germany and never will be.

          • It is not so when people start claiming Labour MPs cannot get elected unless they attack Jews .
Have you ever considered enrolling to a reading course?
I repeat for you highlighting the parts you obviously couldn’t decipher:
“As you said there is a very large Muslim community and virtually no Jews in this constituency. The probability that any other candidate would refrain from similar behavior is nil, or s/he wouldn’t have the chance of a snowball in hell.”
I have to ask…have you ever been here?
I was there many times but it is irrelevant. Seeing the protesters on the Trafalgar square with the signs “We are all Hizballah now”, the screaming Nazis in front of the Ahava shop in Covent Garden protected by the police, reading in the paper that your Parliament can be used for spreading classic anti-Jewish blood-libels is good enough for me. Not to forget that your government sponsored BBC gives forum for a Hamas propagandist known by his wish to see Tel-Aviv nuked, your high ranking government official can commit a hate crime against Jews unpunished, your comrades get acquitted by your court after vandalizing private property because its connection to Israel, and some of your so called liberal papers can incite openly against ‘the Israel Lobby”, “Zionists”, Israel and publishing openly anti-semitic articles and caricatures. Some of your trade unions instead of being busy to represent the interests of its members invest its energy to boycott the Jews, at some of your universities Jewish students must hide their identity, the professors instead of teaching are involved in boycotts against their Israeli colleagues and Israeli students. Your country will be mentioned in the history books as the first where leaders of the academy want to introduce gender segregation on academic institutions, and the first after WWII who almost elected a known anti-semite as the mayor of its capital etc. That many Jewish institution in your country must be protected by private security personnel is certainly doesn’t help either.
All of the above doesn’t speak about the ordinary people but says everything about the so called British establishment.
But this is not 30s Germany and never will be.
No it is not yet but from a Jewish perspective it is closing in quickly thanks among others to the Guardian…

        • It’s not an argument. It’s an assessment.

Still not afraid to show your face here after calling me a Holocaust denier?

          • “Still not afraid to show your face here after calling me a Holocaust denier?”

Why should peter, or anyone else, be afraid to show their face?

You may have had a successful career as a playground bully but, you should have grown up by now. Your increasing ‘chest beating’ along with your constant whingeing has gone beyond boring to being downright irritating. Your antics do not cause anyone to be afraid but only cause a combination of mild amusement and pity that a, supposed, adult can write in such a fashion.

              • “pissing in the wind” is exactly how to describe your and Gerald’s relentless personal attacks on me.

You have no susbtance to offer – hence the insults.
The same goes for the cowardly mental midgets standing behind you. But fret not – I’ll outlast you all.

            • ” your constant whingeing ”

A little unfair . The impact of being called an anti semite is really quite profound and some are so infuriated that years after they still recall the original sting . To the receiver it seems to have been calculated specifically to wrong foot opposition and indeed cause the very hatred of the person that was never there before the insult.

How much worse to be called a Holocaust denier ? The H is still ,despite the far greater numbers involved in the USSR, the event of last century that causes the most pain for many… indeed it’s consequences still reverberate. It is a cheap and nasty insult, designed to cause great offence.

He should apologise. Its not that difficult. He would be applauded.

              • He would be applauded.
Being applauded by you Berchmans would prove that I did something wrong.
BTW as I explained to pretzelberg numerous times I didn’t call him a Holocaust denier only when he ran out of arguments used his usual tactic and started to accuse me with this crap. He is who should apologize. Anyway maybe seeing who is protecting him will light some warning light on his screen.

                • Yes you did suggest I was a Holocaust denier via a sarcastic remark – and you know it.
Shame on you for not admitting it and/or apologising.

only when he ran out of arguments used his usual tactic

                  Shame on you twice over.

              • ‘Household name’ in your post above you refer to the Holocaust as, “..the event of last century that causes the most pain for many… indeed it’s consequences still reverberate”

Yet in 2011 as your alter ego ‘Berchmans’ you wrote,

“Lithuania neglects the memory of its murdered Jews

                Berchmans’s comment, 1 August 2011 5:07AM

                RumRiver

.## Holocaust denial provoked a strong response in America, ##

You have given no links I can only suggest your post is conjecture , my understanding.. which I cannot link as it is 4 57 and I should be running for work is that the holocaust was rediscovered following the 67 conquest of Israel.Up till then many had not wanted to be associated with the disaster ..it was a generation later.
However the great organ that it the American Jewish community began its tune.Previously it had for example tried to keep European Jews out of the US to establish a till of Jews who could keep the dream of zionism alive by proxy.
Only then did the Holocaust get seperated from the general slaughter in the American mind. As Finkelstein says it is a kind of currency to be used whenever Israel commits another faux pas.
                B”

So which is it ‘Household name/Berchmans’?
Is the Holocaust “..the event of last century that causes the most pain for many.. indeed it’s(sic) consequences still reverberate”
Or, an event “REDISCOVERED” in 67 and “..used whenever Israel commits another faux pas.”?

            • Just like peter, you have no substance to your arguments, and therefore resort to cheap insults.

So what about your hypocrisy? Still not going to comment on that?

    • Let’s go back to peter’s original statement:

The probability that any other candidate would refrain from similar behavior is nil

I think you’ll find Ward was up against various candidates when he won the seat.

So peterthehungarian is claiming that all of them indulged in the kind of behaviour addressed by this article!!!

Seriously: who supports this kind of crazy assertion? And why??

  3. David Ward fancies himself as the next George Galloway.

A key difference between them is that, for all the horror of many of Galloway’s views, he is intelligent and plays his game well.

I’m not sure Ward is the sharpest tool in the box.

    • OyVaGoy is right. However obnoxious we Zionists find George Galloway’s views on things connected with Israel, I recognize that he is extremely intelligent and very cunning – and can run rings round most MPs in arguments – even though not long ago he didn’t have the guts to debate with a young Israeli university student.

David Ward may well, as you say, fancy himself as the next George Galloway and for that very reason may have decided to quickly follow in Galloway’s footsteps and speak about the Roma. Galloway speaking last week didn’t, as far as I am aware, bring in any comparisons when he spoke on their behalf.

Ward riding on Galloway’s coat-tails could have echoed Galloway’s take that the British should welcome the Roma as people leaving behind poverty and persecution, Ward possibly realized that he could garner more publicity than Galloway and increase his standing among the anti-Israel/anti-Jewish elements in the city of Bradford, different areas of which both men represent as MPs, if he dragged in ‘Jews, money and power’.

      .

      • Moshe good to see you I hope you are well. As you suggest Galloway is brilliant and weird in equal measure. I know his home town well and I can assure you his accent is as phoney as a nine dollar note. However his refusal to debate the Israeli was not lack of guts as you suggest , the guy can wipe the floor with pretty much anyone as his public destruction of the US politicians some years back showed .

But he is following a cripplingly stupid political path which tries to isolate Israelis rather than debate with them and he was lamely trying to appease his largely Muslim constituents.

I remember him as an effective Socialist pacifist and am saddened by his present stance. As for the kitten licking ? Good grief .

        • I remember him as an effective Socialist pacifist and am saddened by his present stance. As for the kitten licking ? Good grief .

You’ve godda be kiddin. Galloway is a lunatic ‘hate’ America’ extreme delusional radical lefty.

If he was ‘pacifist’, why did he embrace Saddam Hussein who attacked Iran??? IF he was pacifist, why did he not condemn Saddam’s bombardment of Israel with rockets during the US invasion of Kuwait and Iraq? When Israel was not even involved.

‘Pacifist’ is a word reserved for people who abhor and condemn ALL violence. Not just that violence instigated by the US for whatever reason.

Galloway can be ‘boiled down to’ a ‘radical US hater’.

          • ” why did he embrace Saddam Hussein who attacked Iran ”

He was trying to release hostages. People can say anything if this is the motive. In such a situation I would say you have arguments that are not hilariously juvenile I really would.

            • He was trying to release hostages.
Total bullshit berchmans. Even Galloway didn’t say this. He is famous for saying to Saddam that “Sir, I salute your courage, your strength, your indefatigability, and I want you to know that we are with you.” But he didn’t stop with the butcher of Iraq, he needed to kiss the asses of the butcher of Syria and his Hamas brothers.
Soon he will have to work very hard to find one he left unlicked.

            • “He was trying to release hostages”
              Really ‘Household name’
Exactly what hostages were there in 1994 when Galloway made his first visit to Iraq?

Also interesting are the remarks he made about the warmth and support from the people of Gaza towards Saddam Hussein.

“In 1994, Galloway faced some of his strongest criticism on his return from a Middle-Eastern visit during which he had met Saddam Hussein “to try and bring about an end to sanctions, suffering and war”. At the meeting, he reported the support given to Saddam by the people of the Gaza Strip which he had just visited: “I can honestly tell you that there was not a single person to whom I told I was coming to Iraq and hoping to meet with yourself who did not wish me to convey their heartfelt, fraternal greetings and support”. He ended his speech in English with the statement “Sir, I salute your courage, your strength, your indefatigability”.

    • I’m not sure Ward is the sharpest tool in the box.

Galloway is not the sharpest in the box either. Stirring up revulsion from the majority of the electorate is hardly ‘sharp’. Adopting Muslim values will only endear Galloway to a small part of the UK Muslim population.

I feel sure that a majority, a pretty silent majority, of UK Muslims see Galloway exactly for what he is.

  4. David Ward is a disgrace to his party, a disgrace to Parliament, and a disgrace to British politics. No doubt he will be rewarded with a peerage like that other LibDem anti-semite “Baroness” Jenny Tonge.

Ward is pandering to the Muslim vote with a series of sly nudge-nudge wink-wing comments, carefully constructed to remain just on the right side of the law. He hasn’t even got the decency to express his racism openly.

  5. David Ward is a non entity with a minuscule majority that will be wiped out at the next election in 2015. There are other Lib Dems with far bigger majorities who will bite the dust because of their craven behaviour in the coalition.
And anyway, what have the Roma ever done for us…?
