Confirmed: Harriet Sherwood announces her departure from Jerusalem

A source recently forwarded us the following email, confirming information we had received a couple of weeks ago.

harriet sherwoodWe have been monitoring Sherwood’s work at the Guardian since her debut as their Jerusalem correspondent in July of 2010, and though in many ways her coverage was fully consistent with the politics of the Guardian Left, pro-Palestinian circles in which she travels, we also published a few posts which noted her modest growth as a reporter.

Here are a few of the more popular CiF Watch posts about Sherwood’s reporting.

1. Harriet Sherwood does her bit for BDS

2.  Harriet Sherwood’s Munich Massacre story follows Guardian rule on obscuring Palestinian terrorism

3. Rosy’s: Follow-up on the Gaza spa where Harriet Sherwood got her open-air prison pedicure

4.  Where in the world was Harriet Sherwood? Well beyond the 3 nautical mile limit from Gaza coast

5. Harriet Sherwood gets it right.

6Sherwood in Jerusalem: a six month overview

7Harriet Sherwood parrots false charge of ‘Water Apartheid’

8Harriet Sherwood misleads on religious significance of the Western Wall

9Palestinian textbooks erase Israel. Harriet Sherwood erases moral distinctions.

10. Harriet Sherwood gets it right about settlers and violence.

11. Harriet Sherwood’s moral equivalence in reporting the murders in Itamar

We’ll update you when Sherwood’s permanent replacement at the Jerusalem desk is announced.

      • Not everyone can write for the Guardian. Could we say that some people are jealous and criticize because they don’t write for such a prestigious newspaper? What do you think?

        • Not everyone can write for the Guardian.
I agree. Not everyone can write for the Guardian. The person must be loyal to the Guardian party-line until the last drop of blood of the Guardian’s pet national/religious/political group de jour, must have a proven experience in political propaganda and demagoguery, must have strong emotional connection for one of the fashionable murderous ideologies either Communism or Islamism (preferably both), must be totally blind for facts contradicting the ideological truth and first of all must have subzero IQ. The total lack of general knowledge and history is a definite advantage.
Could we say that some people are jealous and criticize because they don’t write for such a prestigious newspaper?
Yes we could. There are some living fossils who as young party propagandists worked for the Pravda and now they are out of work, and a lot of totally unemployable and untalented young good for nothings who are forced to do with working for the Morning Star or the Socialist Worker on volunteer basis.
          What do you think?
Bad question. If you think anything you are definitely not for the Guardian. Try a real workplace.

          • ” the Morning Star or the Socialist Worker ”

Farcical. True comedy. The Guardian is a capitalism -supporting, royalty- suffering ,war endorsing hypocritical rag, criticising Israel every time they take out a house in a street in Gaza but look the other way as we do way way worse in other areas.

It is a politically centrist paper with a few articles about the environment and Bowie to look trendy .It has a few terrific journalists. Let us hope the replacement is one.

        • “Not everyone can write for the Guardian”
Very few would want too. Why would anyone want to work for a newspaper with a year on year declining circulation that has just had to sell the ‘family silver’ to get a much needed cash injection.

“Could we say that some people are jealous and criticize because they don’t write for such a prestigious newspaper?”
Of course you can say it, but that does not mean that it is true.

          “What do you think?”
I think you either have a sense of humour or you’re a ‘Guardianista’ and full of shit.
          Which is it?

        • ‘Not everyone can write for the Guardian’.

Actually, thanks to CIF and the Graun’s shift to ‘citizen journalism’ (better rendered as ‘paying readers and other wannabes peanuts for any shite they churn out) anyone can write for this paper online now. So Charlie Skelton can tell CIFers that the Syrian civil war is all the creation of the Bilderbegers and the Western intelligence agencies, and can accuse journalists (including the Graun’s own correspondents) of covering up the truth.

So anyone can write for the Graun now, regardless of the shit they churn out.

  1. Let’s not be too exultant until we have seen who is going to take her place, and how they choose to frame their writing.

I don’t think any friends of Israel will be crying, snoopy, but it is just possible we’ll remember the Sherwood days with fondness in a year or two!

    • Who ever replaces her is going to be an honest reporter rather than someone sent to ‘get the goods on the Zionists’. Someone sent with an open mind to help Guardian readers really understand the complexities of the problems between Jew and Arab.

      At least, in my dreams.

      • A journalist’s job is to report facts, not your own political views which are shared only by a minority in Israel.

        • I see you got your knowledge of Israel from Harriett. You don’t know the political views of the poster you are addressing and you know with a huge degree of certainty that it is shared only by a minority in Israel.
But now when you have to suffer a short cessation in getting the daily crap (sorry truth) from the Israeli correspondent let me inform you about the most recent political views in Israel. What minority is in your mind?

        • “A journalist’s job is to report facts, not your own political views which are shared only by a minority in Israel.”

You do know this website points out the missed facts and the non-facts of many Guardian stories, do you not? Or did you just make a couple of comments without doing your fact checking first. See, that’s how I know you’re a Guardian journalist. It’s not your snark and ability to jot 300 characters into complete sentences. It’s the fact that you totally missed the fucking boat 2 times in a row.

          Try for a 3rd?

  2. Whoever takes her place will continue to carry out editorial policy concerning affairs in this region. It would be nice if the next correspondent brought some objectivity with him/her. But I won’t be betting on it.

  3. I have often wondered what happens to Guardian people when they leave The Guardian. I suspect that only the BBC would be a possible employer. What ever happened to Brian Whittiker?

  4. Harriet is a great journalist, and a highly respected professional with a great journalistic career. She is a woman who is far more successful than some men. There will always be bitter people to criticize her because they have not thrived in their professional lives as she has.

    • You know Jjgan things are not so simple. You know one person’s terrorist is an other person’s freedom fighter. With dear Harriett the situation is exactly the same. For you and similar brainwashed* ignorant but very loyal party members she is a great source of knowledge. For readers who are interested in facts and objective reporting she is a extremely untalented political propagandist blessed with a very modest set of mental capabilities.
*Sorry, my mistake. To be brainwashed you need a brain containing minimum one brain cell. Please replace the word “brainwashed” with “brainless”.

    • Do you read the criticism of Harriet on this site, or do you just pull shit out of your ass? Because it seems more like the latter, Homes. But, yes, let’s just jump to side without any care or concern about the real issues involved. That must make you a member of the Harriet Sherwood Political Action Committee (HaSPAC) which we all know is about ruining lives from afar. Come clean.

      • “or do you just pull shit out of your ass? Because it seems more like the latter, Homes”
Constipation of the brain, diarrhea of the mouth.

  5. Jjgan: “Harriet is a great journalist, and a highly respected professional with a great journalistic career.”

Not in Israel she aint. But back in Blighty where you sanctimonious closet imperialists like to think that your dark fantasies about Jews are of some moral and intellectual value, she’s perfect for vindicating your bigoted opinions.

That stuff about her being criticised because she’s a successful woman, just laughable. You need to grow up!

  6. The professional activist for Palestinian propaganda, Sherwood, might turn to a new profession, journalist f.e.
