Jonathan Miller unleashes five minute anti-Israel smear on Channel 4

Cross posted by London-based blogger Richard Millett

In a cunning twist to that famous Fawlty Towers scene when Basil Fawlty tries to not mention the war when serving German guests but fails, Channel 4 News journalist Jonathan Miller does his best to not mention the war and succeeds!

The war that would not pass Miller’s lips was the one of 1948 when Israel beat five Arab armies and more to establish its legal state. Whereas the putative Israelis accepted UN Resolution 181 (the Partition resolution) the Arab world rejected it hoping to inflict on Israel’s Jews a second Holocaust instead.

To add to the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust another 6,000 Jews needlessly lost their lives in that 1947-49 war.

Not that such history seems to be of much concern to Jonathan Miller.

In his five-minute piece on Gaza for Channel 4 News last night he shows Palestinians playing football. Miller describes how “teams are named after the home towns from which previous generations were cleansed 66 years ago”. In one match we are told “Jaffa are playing Ashkelon”.

So Miller reduces the 1947-49 conflict down to one malicious word: Cleansed. The Palestinians were not “cleansed”, but Jews are cast as evil-doers nevertheless.

Miller tells us that Hamas and Fatah supporters play on the same team. It’s very touching to see guys taking time out from planning another genocide of the Jewish people (see Hamas’ Charter) and inciting racial hatred against Jews (see PA/Fatah TV) to play a bit of footy. The vicious fight at the end between two players possibly betrays the existing hatred between these two factions.

Miller starts his piece to camera with the common slur that Israel is cruel to Palestinian children. We are introduced to Abdel Karim who has a brain tumour and who has suffered a relapse after his first operation. Miller explains:

“Abdul Karim’s lifesaving treatment was delayed because Israel refused permission for his mother to accompany him to Jerusalem. They had to reapply for his grandmother to go instead. The process took two months. The oncologist is sending him to Israel again. This time for radiotherapy.”

Miller doesn’t tell us that Israel suspects Abdul’s father and mother of involvement in terrorism. Miller clearly outlines this on the Channel 4 News website where he writes:

“Arafat al-Dalo is not permitted to enter Israel because he had once been shot in the leg by an Israeli high-velocity bullet. Arafat, who is a tailor by trade, insisted categorically that he was not a militant. He had got caught up in a shooting incident at a border crossing, he said.

Ghada thinks she was refused because one of her brothers had been shot dead in a clash with Israeli forces. This made him a “shahid”, a “martyr” in Palestine; in Israel, it made Ghada a suspect.”

So why was this left out of the Channel 4 News footage?

Miller finishes his piece to camera with this cynical and unsubstantiated allegation against Israel:

“Paediatricians here cite several cases in which permissions to cross into Israel have taken so long that very sick children have died waiting.”

Jews responsible for the deaths of children is a long-standing anti-Semitic slur.

Last night Miller tweeted that he isn’t anti-Semitic:

What is truly shocking is Channel 4’s increasing attacks on Israel and the Jewish people.

Channel 4’s Dispatches Inside The Israel Lobby presented by Peter Oborne begins with Oborne’s ominous words:

“Tonight on Dispatches how British policy is influenced by supporters of a foreign power…We investigate the Israel Lobby’s bankrolling of British politicians.”

That’s another long-standing anti-Semitic slur of Jews using money and power for nefarious reasons.

Sadly, Oborne is allowed to continue plying his vile trade in spurious allegations against Israel and its supporters for the Daily Telegraph (here and here).

Channel 4 also showed Peter Kosminky’s The Promise which ended with the words of a British soldier:

“After Bergen-Belsen, I thought that the Jews deserved a state, but now I’m not so sure…Their precious state has been born in violence and cruelty to its neighbours, and I’m not sure I want it to prosper…”

Channel 4 also broadcast Going for Gold in Gaza about disabled Palestinians training for the Paralympics. One Palestinian described in Arabic how he was able to rehabilitate himself at Israeli hospitals after the accident that left him disabled, but the word “Israeli” was suspiciously left out of the subtitles.

Finally, there was the time that Jon Snow, Channel 4’s main news presenter, lunged at me when I questioned him about his persistent use of the term “the Jewish lobby”.

Feel free to complain to OFCOM about Miller’s piece if you don’t want Miller to get away with it. Write to but you must mention the date and time of the programme: Channel 4 News at 7pm on 18th February.

And here is that famous “Don’t mention the War” scene from Fawlty Towers. Instead of Basil Fawlty, think Jonathan Miller.

Hamas celebrates anniversary of Haifa restaurant bombing
Hamas newspaper Palestine Times has a featured article celebrating the ten year anniversary of the bombing of the Arab-owned Matza restaurant in Haifa, that killed 16 Israeli civilians. The article includes photos of the bomber as well as of the devastation to the restaurant, whose roof collapsed from the force of the explosion.

Maybe I missed it, but I don’t recall seeing any Arabs protesting against this attack, or writing anguished op-eds about how a fellow Muslim could have done such a thing. No Arab groups popped up on college campuses calling for solidarity with Jews against terror. There were no UN resolutions condemning the massacre.
But there was a PA-sponsored soccer tournament in Tulkarem named after the suicide bomber.
Hamas celebrates 10th anniversary of Davidka Square bus bombing
The top headline on the Al Qassam Brigades (Hamas) webpage today is a celebration of the tenth
anniversary of the bombing of bus 14A in Jerusalem.

Hamas doesn’t pretend that they were targeting the army, as they sometimes pretend to nowadays. They say explicitly that they targeted a passenger bus. This is a pure celebration of terrorism. They even include photos that show dead bodies.

Six of the dead were over 65 years old.
Hamas is also proud that some 100 people were wounded in the attack.

If anyone thinks for a moment that Hamas’ bloodlust has lessened in the years since then, just read that article using Google Translate..

Hamas celebrates 11th anniversary of Rishon LeZion terror attack
    May 7, 2013

Hamas might be telling Western media that it never targets civilians, but in Arabic it celebrates the deaths of innocents it killed every day.

The latest on the Al Qassam website (only the Arabic version, naturally) celebrates the 11th anniversary of the Rishon LeZion terror attack. Wikipedia describes the attack:

On Tuesday, 7 May 2002 at 11:03 pm, a Palestinian suicide bomber detonated a hidden explosive device within a crowded game club full of people located in the new industrial area of Rishon Lezion, only 10 km south of Tel Aviv, killing 16 innocent civilians and injuring 55 people, 10 of them in critical condition.

After the attack the Israeli police stated that the suicide bomber was carrying a briefcase full of explosives and in addition was also wearing an explosive belt. The police estimated that the total weight of explosives were between 7 to 8 kilograms, and stated that the briefcase contained also metal fragments and bolts in order to maximize the number of casualties in the attack.
Ten of the fatalities were over 50 years old.

Hamas calls it a “heroic” operation, saying that over 20 “Zionists” were killed and over 60 injured, “most of them in critical condition.”

Hamas didn’t take credit for the attack until six years later, when it held a “wedding feast” for the bomber and his fictional virgins in paradise. His daughter is quoted as being proud of her terrorist father.

The woman who drive the bomber to the attack was caught and sentenced to 20 years – but was released in the Gilad Shalit swap.

Hamas Arch Terrorist: No Regrets for Murdering 67 Israelis
Hamas terrorist Abdullah Barghouti, serving 67 life sentences in Israel, speaks out from his prison cell.

A Hamas terrorist who engineered the deaths of 67 Israelis during the Second Intifada, also known as the Oslo War, has said that he has no regrets whatsoever over the Israeli blood he spilled.
The terrorist, Abdullah Barghouti, was sentenced to 67 life sentences for his role in the murders of Israelis in a string of suicide bombings, including the suicide attack at the Sbarro restaurant in Jerusalem in 2001. In an interview from his cell in an Israeli prison, which was broadcast on Hamas television, Barghouti said that he is in good health and that his morale is high.

Hamas brags about eleven years of terrorism
The Palestine Times website published an article today listing Hamas’ terrorist accomplishments since the beginning of the terror war that began in September 2000.

They brag about three specific acts of terror:

The massacre at the Mercaz Harav yeshiva killing 8 students
The attack by a laser-guided anti-tank missile against a schoolbus, killing a child (that they claim was a “soldier”)

The Park Hotel Passover massacre killing 30, mostly elderly, Jews. (Hamas inflates the number of victims to 36.)

The article says that in the past eleven years Hamas has committed:

    4303 terror attacks
    61 suicide attacks
    24 attempts to capture Israelis
    423 bombings
    90 sniper attacks
    146 ambushes

In addition, they claim 8085 projectiles fired from Gaza, of which 2627 were Qassam rockets and 303 were Grad rockets.

They claim to have killed 910 “Zionists” in that time period, while losing 1697 of their members. Not civilians – 1697 dead Hamas terrorists. This doesn’t include members of other terror groups like Fatah and Islamic Jihad.

It is clear from the article that Hamas considers the second intifada to still be going on.
Hamas: “Killing Jews is Worship that Draws Us Closer to Allah”
    NOVEMBER 28 2012

    • In short: a very young child suffering from a brain tumor was delayed access to adequate treatment for two months as he lives in Gaza, which has been under Israeli closure since 2007.

If Israel did not want the mother to go with him, why on earth did it take Israel two months to grant a permit to the grandmother? Two months is a considerable amount of time for a child who has brain cancer.

No wonder this Channel 4 video is going viral.

      • If this is the whole story then maybe Miller should have given Israel the chance to explain? Isn’t that how proper journalism should be?

        • All people see is a three-year old child suffering from brain cancer who was temporarily delayed access to life saving treatment because it took two months to Israel to grant a permit to his grandmother. This is why so many people are sharing this video and commenting on it in the UK.

            • No they don’t and I won’t be happy until all Palestinians have been wiped out from our land , what a great day it will be for democracy and for justice. The world will applaud and remember just how great Israel was to defeat its enemy. Only kidding.

          • I see. Well, please, don’t ever consider your criticism of Israel’s worldly affairs to be substantial. Your breakdown is a sad story, but it came from your keyboard, y’know? If you want to continuously berate Israel over one young child’s bout with brain cancer, then maybe you’d like to hear me kvetch about the rat poison tipped nails delivered by suicide bombers who just happened to have been injected with viruses like HIV and Hepatitis-A,B,C.

      • Jmara,
Why would Israelis treat a Palestinian child in the first place coming from a territory ruled by people bent on its destruction and the genocide of Jews?
Answer: Because Israel is an uncommonly humanitarian society in a region filled to the brim with racist haters and Jew baiters.
What would Hamas do were the situation reversed? Think about an answer.

        • Jeff, if you had watched this story you would know that Gaza has been under Israeli closure since 2007, and that Israel does not let Gazans import the medical equipment needed to treat this three -year old child with a brain tumor. It is perfectly normal that Israel should treat a child coming from Gaza if its army controls access to Gaza and if it does not let adequate medical equipment enter Gaza on security grounds.

          • Jmara,
Maybe time to do something about your own brain tumor that’s causing your delusions of an Israel cruel for the sake of it when in fact Israelis give first rate medical treatment on the taxpayers dime even to those who would likely kill them as a religious duty given the chance.
P.S. You never answered my direct question. To do so honestly would give the game away.

          • Yes, treating thousands from a belligerent territory except for one, is unfathomably cruel by any Israel hater’s standard.
BTW, Gaza borders two states (legitimate ones), not one. And speaking of controlling borders, Hamas has been known to refuse supplies coming through its border with Israel.
You, however, should apply to go Israel for medical treatment. I hear they have some fine Jewish psychiatrists there to help with your hate problem.

          • “Israel does not let Gazans import the medical equipment needed to treat this three -year old child with a brain tumor.”

            You are pathetic.

Apparently, it’s cool to inject depressed teenagers with deadly viruses so when they blow themselves up in a pizzeria, the survivors of the blast will then have to deal with diseases. Because you’re a humanist who, coincidentally, just happens to believe that the Jews of the Middle East are at the root of all the Earth’s issues.

There is a reason why your cycle of stupidity is never ending. For one, you’re obsessed. Number two is you’re incredibly stupid. The Palestinians will never get a state but not because Israel hasn’t offered it to them. It’s because morons like you insist that the extremist element in their society is the correct one.

You just don’t like dead Arab children. Dead Jewish children, murdered while waiting to grab a lunch at noontime, means nothing to you.

            • how come you rank 7th on the countries happiness scale, on this planet, you really sound like you are under the cosh of the mighty palestinian military, but they dont have one , thats why you are so happy but got to pretend your terrified all the time. if you really want that experience pop over the wall and spend some time with the palestinians,i dont know what they rank on the happiness scale do you??

  2. “Miller doesn’t tell us that Israel suspects Abdul’s father and mother of involvement in terrorism”

This is a lie… And the author of this CIF Watch post is fully aware of it since he immediately writes that “Ghada thinks she was refused because one of her brothers had been shot dead in a clash with Israeli force”.

She is no terrorist. It’s just that her brother was killed by Israeli forces.

    • Nat I’m looking forward to read your invaluable views regarding the obligations of the Israeli government to give medical treatment to any non-Israeli citizens. The same time you should quote from your petition to your own government demanding the same right for aliens in your own country. Please don’t let me wait in vain…
BTW why are you changing your moniker in every thread? You want to make the readers believe that the ward you are closed in is overcrowded?

  3. Gaza is well aware that Israel won’t let in anyone suspected of terrorist connections. If the welfare of the child is paramount they should take this into consideration before making application to Israel.

If they want to make PR capital they should carry on as they are doing.

  4. Why on earth should Israel take in sick kids from another country for free treatment? Would Jonathan Miller be able simply to cross the border into the US/France/Belgium etc and expect free treatment? If the Arabs want independence let them build hospitals with the cash they use to train terrorists who execute Jews. Imagine how many hospitals all those rockets fired into Israelc could have funded.

Nevertheless Israeli hospitals freely take in the sick from Gaza and the PA, paid for by Israeli tax payers not the Arabs. Why? Because as Miller has forgotten, Jews are humanitarian by nature. Witness the only field hospital treating wounded and sick Syrians is set up by Israel. Witness how many Syrians are currently being treated in Israel in secrecy because if the Syrian authorities hear of this they’ll kill those patients on their return to Syria.

    The man is AshAmed

    • Why? Because Israel has been imposing a closure on Gaza since 2007 and does not let Gazans import medical equipment required to treat children suffering from brain cancer. That’s why.

    • Beside, your lack of compassion for a three-year old child suffering from brain cancer is chilling, Sharon.

      • When the sick trying to get into Israel hide bombs under their robes, you bet I don’t have sympathy for them. Let’s not forget where Haniyeh took his grandchild for treatment, or where two sets of twins were born in Israeli hospitals saving them and their mothers, or where a Gazan boy is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Of course i I could go on and on listing how many Arabs from Gaza, Judea and Samaria are treated in Israeli hospitals. Get some facts and then maybe someone will take you seriously!

      • Maybe you don’t know so let me tell you a very significant fact of life: The security of Israelis, Jews, Arabs working and treated (including many children) in Israeli hospitals takes precedence. Your lack of compassion for their lives and sufferings is chilling but understandable as you wouldn’t give a piece of your old and broken kaffiyeh for their existence. You should take your vomit inducing hypocrite whining to an other website (suggested places: Guardian CIF, Electronic Intifada, Stormfront, Aryan Nation, PressTV etc.) where certainly you will find many Parteigenossen who will take you seriously.

      • “..your lack of compassion for a three-year old child..”
‘Jmara’ so you think your squalid attempts to use this poor child as a ‘political football’ displays compassion?
No! all it displays is the fact that there is not any low you and your ilk will not sink to in your increasingly desperate attempts to find a stick to beat Israel with.

Now slither off, back into the foul and putrid cesspit you slithered out of. Your attempt to use the condition of this poor child is beneath contempt.

        • Talk as much as you like. What people have seen on TV is a three-year old child suffering from brain cancer who’s being told he cannot access adequate treatment before two months because of the closure of Gaza by Israel.

          • ‘Jmara’ I refer you to my post above.

Now off you go, the putrid stench from you and your posts is getting stronger.

          • Talk as much as you like. Individuals such as them and you see what you want to see and hear. What you don’t want to see and hear is Israel protecting its own citizens.

          • Talk as much as you like.
says everything about your ability to argue.
What people have seen on TV… is what the report will show them.
…is a three-year old child suffering from brain cancer who’s being told he cannot access adequate treatment before two months because of the closure of Gaza by Israel.
…and why there is no adequate treatment available in Gaza? There is no hospitals in Gaza? (There are – Hamas leaders used the biggest of them as a hiding place) There are no doctors? And why should Israel help to solve the inadequacy of the healthcare system of Gaza? Many children is dying every day on the planet due to lack of adequate medical facilities – all of them should be treated in Israel? Or in other richer countries? Where are the BBC programs demanding their treatment in UK hospitals?

      • Jmara – you just can’t help it with your self-righteous bulllshit. Lack of compassion for three-year old children suffering? What’s chilling is that innocent lives only matter if you can make some political gain out of them being the ‘victims’ of the Jews. No crocodile tears for the children of Syria? Expendable and of no political value to you? That’s the moral currency you deal in.

          • I see, ‘changing the topic’ means giving an opinion that differs from yours and exposes your sanctimonious bigotry.

            • watched chomsky dershovitz debate about Israel at Harvard, old dersho dont know shit does he, and what he dont, he makes up,all hot air chutzpah, boy did he get his ass kicked!!

              • And what has to do the debate with this article? But your love of Chomsky the apologist for genocidal regimes and a vicious hater of democracy tells a lot about you. Anyway your declaration of Chomsky’s victory is a textbook example of the last arguments of the losers.

                • Israel is a lot like the idea of smoking, all said it was good for you but over many years the truth built and built, and the propagandists argument fell apart. Now we all know, the truth about smoking And year by year the truth about your apartheid genocidal state becomes more unpalatable to the rest of us. That’s why you get so upset about any contradiction of your dogma, this obsessive quest to prove, your just, mind you ,it’s just the same old gang here , day after day ,defending the faith, I say again get a life . What are you so afraid of or ain’t you got nothing better to do.

                  • Libero-fascists are a lot like the idea of smoking, all said you want to be popular but over many years the truth built and built, and the propagandists argument fell apart. Now we all know, the truth about smoking And year by year the truth about your ignorance becomes more unpalatable to the rest of us. That’s why you get so upset about any contradiction of your dogma, this obsessive quest to prove, your just, mind you ,it’s just the same old gang here , day after day ,defending the faith, I say again get a life . What are you so afraid of or ain’t you got nothing better to do.

And by the way, things like this don’t happen in an “apartheid, genocidal state.”
And you don’t see scenes like this in an “apartheid, genocidal state.”
And we know how to respond to liars like you

Get an education or a life, or maybe both you ignorant jackass.

                  • Oh, and another thing, if Israel’s intentions were genocidal, the Palestinian population would have gone down instead of up, You should looking up the meanings of words before you use them, maybe try looking at one of those rectangular objects filled with paper, known as a “book,” one type of which is called a “dictionary.”

            • no , an opinion not on the topic, you know talking about something else rather than some uncomfortable truth, you all do that here i notice

              • Noam, the uncomfortable truth is that your ideological opposition to Israel – the embodiment of the Jewish emergence of powerlessness – intersects with extreme right-wing delusions of the nefarious and conspiratorial nature of Jewish criminality. And what better way to illustrate it than through the story of innocent Palestinian children being denied medical treatment in Israel because of the diabolical heartlessness of the Zionists. Little Saint Hue of Norfolk would be proud that you are keeping medieval, chauvinistic libels against the Jews alive and well in progressive, enlightened Europe.

      • Love to believe you are a true humanitarian, with purity in your heart and a desire for a truly just world. Alas, your inability to separate facts from speculation and kneejerk cheerleading for Palestinian stenography makes me feel you care about human affairs about as much as neo-Nazis care about non-Jewish victims of the Nazis. That’s not a compliment.

    • Jews are humanitarian by nature

Don’t be ridiculous. Some are humanitarian, some aren’t – just like anywhere else in the world.

      And “by nature”????

  5. Natzie misuses children for his terror support, nothing new.
The other question which remains is why your relatives didn`t go to Egypt for medical care.

    • Or why the PLA, PLO, Hmas, PFLP, Islamic Jihad and Hamas are known for terror, but not for medical care.

  6. “To add to the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust another 6,000 Jews needlessly lost their lives in that 1947-49 war.”

Let us not forget that Britain and France took concrete steps to ensure that the Jews would lose that war. The likely result had they succeeded, would have been a half million extra dead Jews 3 years after WWII ended.

  7. Another big decontextualisation at The Guardian

In fact, Iran is home to the largest Jewish community in the Middle East outside Israel and there are believed to be more 200,000 Iranian Jews presently living in Israel.

How did it happen, that most of the Iranian Jewry are not Iranian citizens anymore?

  8. “Paediatricians here cite several cases in which permissions to cross into Israel have taken so long that very sick children have died waiting.”

In other words, Miller expects Israel not only to provide free medical services to an enemy which has sworn genocidal destruction of Jews – but to provide that service at Palestinian discretion, with no wariness. He takes Jews either for fools or for slaves to Muslims/Gentiles.

      • Nat please quote the relevant legal sources stating that Israel is obligated to supply medical services to one of its very hostile neighbors.
Additionally please quote the relevant legal documents stating that a country who has no boots on the ground in Gaza and doesn’t have full control of its borders must be considered an occupying power.

      • I wonder if there was no blockade then Israel wouldn;t be occupying according to you. in that case Israel would have the right to close its crossing from Gaza and preven people from Gaza to get medical treatment in Israel. Right?.

  9. Natzie likes terror, but hates medical care. How ungrateful, though understandable considering the meds he must take.
