Gideon Levy recycles a likely fabricated Golda Meir quote for the Irish Times

As CAMERA has previously documented, in 2004 Gideon Levy claimed in a Ha’aretz column that “Golda Meir said that after what the Nazis did to us, we can do whatever we want,” but was later forced to admit that he had no source for the quote. In an email to CAMERA, he acknowledged: “Therefore we dropped the quotation in the original version in Hebrew and by mistake it was printed in the English version.”

He’s at it again.

A gushing profile of Levy, a favorite of anti-Zionists in the Western media, was published on September 11th in the Irish Times by Lara Marlow, titled “Holocaust makes Israelis think international law doesn’t apply.

levy

It included the following passage, which neatly falls in line with the characteristically malign narrative advanced in the headline:

On a national level, “Golda Meir said that after the Holocaust, Jews have the right to do anything they want,” Levy continues. “The Holocaust makes Israelis think international law doesn’t apply to them, because they are the ultimate victims of history; the only victims.”

Anyone even remotely familiar with Levy’s body of work would likely be quite skeptical of those who might suggest he simply ‘forgot’ to have previously acknowledged the absence of anything resembling a source for the quote.

  1. Oh Gideon, Gideon. The man makes a living by being a glorified internet troll. You can find a false quote or accusation in virtually every one of his columns. He flies around the world to make paid speeches at conventions funded by the same groups that most likely donate to “Haaretz”.

And I’m willing to bet that if someone one day finds out who is on “Haaretz”‘s and Levy’s list of donations they would find global pro-Palestinian organizations that can be traced right back to Qatar and the Gulf states.

They will find that once proud newspaper “Haaretz” is essentially funded by Qatar. I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life. The radicalization this newspaper has gone through in the last few years cannot be coincidental.

  2. They need to amend the article to state levy admitted he had no proof of this quote.
And then let the reader decide the veracity of that statement.

  3. I saw Gideon Levy interviewed by Stephen Sackur on BBC’s recent Hard Talk. While I take issue with much of Levy’s views I have to admit that what came across in that interview for me is his profound love for Israel and a genuine wish for peace to prevail.

Such a pity, then, that Levy continues to make omissions and errors, particularly his lack of framing his opinions into any context [rarely does he talk about rockets into Israel or issues about Hamas’s charter.] Unfortunately, he continues to demonstrate that he cannot move out of his binary position: Israelis = oppressors / Palestinians = innocents.

When Levy claims an untruth about Israel all balance flies out of the window for me. He makes it easy for pro-Israel supporters to misconstrue his words because they can be read as simple glorification of everything and anything that Hamas and the Palestinians do.

The way I see it is that Gideon Levy is a reminder to me of my own challenge. How, as a staunch supporter of Israel, can I balance my steadfast belief in Zionism and in Israel’s right to self-determination with the ability to also make criticisms about the Israeli government and some of its policies?

My hackles go up the moment Israel [or Jews] is criticised. My default position is a knee-jerk response, a self defensive pose. It colours all my rationale. Maybe Gideon Levy has this in reverse?

I would like to create a dialogue that explores taboo issues that prevent peace on both sides without demonizing Israel. Levy has not accomplished this. And I am far from it.

    • they’re all in bed with each other. I have a sneaky feeling Lisa Goldman plugged Max Blumenthal at her new job.
