Poll: 82% of UK Jews believe media bias against Israel fuels antisemitism in Britain

The Campaign Against Antisemitism just released a report based on two new YouGov polls measuring both antisemitic sentiment amongst the British public, and its effect on British Jewry.

Here are the highlights:

British Public’s Attitudes Towards British Jews

  • 25% of Britons believe that “Jews chase money more than other British people.”
  • 20% of Britons believe “Jews’ loyalty to Israel makes them less loyal to Britain than other British people.”
  • 17% of Britons believe that “Jews think they are better than other people” and that “Jews have too much power in the media.”
  • 13% of Britons believe that “Jews talk about the Holocaust too much in order to get sympathy.”

The Jewish Community’s Reactions to Antisemitism

  • 25% of British Jews have considered leaving the country in the past two years because of rising antisemitism.
  • 45% of British Jews feel their family is threatened by Islamist extremism.
  • 77% of British Jews have witnessed antisemitism disguised as a political comment about Israel.
  • 84% of British Jews consider boycotts of businesses selling Israeli products to be intimidation.

Most interesting, from our perspective, was this:

  • 82% say that media bias against Israel fuels persecution of Jews in Britain.

Tellingly, reports on the poll in The IndependentGuardian, and Telegraph  highlighted much of the data but omitted these results regarding the relationship between media bias against Israel and antisemitism in the UK.

Of course, these findings on the fears of British Jews would resonate with anyone familiar with the UK media’s coverage of Israel in general, and the summer war in Gaza in particular.

We can only hope that UK newspaper editors will one day engage in some serious reflection, and consider their ethical responsibility to be mindful of the injurious impact on British Jews caused by such one-sided, sensational, context-free reports and images.

  1. ” … reports on the poll in The Independent, Guardian, and Telegraph highlighted much of the data but omitted these results regarding the relationship between media bias against Israel and antisemitism in the UK”. Problem in a nutshell, eh?

    • True enough.
It is dreadful to see the Telegraph becoming just another variation on the blatant antisemitism of the Guardian and Independent.

  2. What a non-event! 82% of ‘British Jews’ think that boycotts of Israel are antisemitic!!?

    Ffs! Lol

Of course they do! They’re the same 82% who believe Israel has a ‘ right to exist’ (non-existent legal term, for all you scholars out there) and who turn a blind eye to Israeli was crimes.

To be honest, can we not swap these bigoted 82% with some more educated human rights respecting Jews instead?

    • You want to Be Honest? Sibyl Nazi, who comes on here to lambast World Jewry for a genocide that never happened, wants to be taken seriously about pish-poshing anti-Semitism. What a fucking joke.

Here’s a poll number: 100% of Nazis think they’re special.

    • We Tamara? WE?! Are you a Brit today? Two weeks ago you were an African American… Some Zionist secret virus crashed your 1 kbyte size hard disk…

    • … right to exist’ (non-existent legal term,
Correct. For your kind of Nazis it is absolutely non-existent.
…for all you scholars out there…
Some of “us” may be “scholars”, others not. One thing is certain Tamara – your scholarship stopped after the fifth try to complete the third grade of the elementary school.

    • He/She/It ‘Tamara’ do enlighten me under what term, legal or otherwise, does a lying, illiterate, self-confessed retard such as yourself have a right to exist?
Why can’t we* swap you for something more useful, such as a pool of dog-vomit?

      * we being the sentient human beings who, currently, have to exist on this planet along with a waste of space and oxygen such as yourself.

    • a) Where in the poll do 82% of ‘British Jews’ think that boycotts of Israel are antisemitic?
      b) Why “British Jews” in quotes?
      c) “They’re the same 82% who believe Israel has a ‘ right to exist’ ” – yes, like most of the civilised world.
      d) The 82% who feel media bias against Israel fuels anti-Semitism you label as “bigoted”??

      Look who’s talking.

    • Lady T

So those 82% think Israel has a right to exist, which negates their right to exist as well eh? And your solution is ‘swapping’ them for a better type of human being? Another Nazi style euphemism from our enlightened, liberal in-house Jew-baiter, whose one-track dogmatism revolves around the fact that 82% of Jews deserve to be hated out of existence.

The irony is that many of those 82% think Israel should exist because of self-righteous ass-holes like you, who live with the perpetual delusion that they have nothing in common with fascists and racists. Jews know better, they know what makes you tick, and understand that you are incapable of identifying your own visceral bigotry and malice.

And I have my own solution to your ‘82% of Jews’ problem; fuck off and contribute your more enlightened views to SWP or Stormfront websites.

  3. From the G.:
It also found that one in four (25%) Britons believed that Jews chase money more than other British people, a figure which rose to 39% of those participants who identified themselves as Ukip voters.

    UKIP. Why aren’t I susprised?
Although the general figure is shocking enough, of course.

Of those polled, men were more likely than women to believe at least one of the antisemitic statements which were put to them.

A further underlining of the fact that men tend to be more bigoted than women.

    From CiF/the poll:
82% say that media bias against Israel fuels persecution of Jews in Britain.

It would be interesting to know what exactly said persecution comprises. Of course there will sadly for various fucked up reasons always be prejudice against Jews.
But does the persecution referred to refer to e.g. bigotry in housing and work (which thankfully is at a very low rate)?
Or physical attacks? This is largely due to Muslim bigots. And I fear any (perceived or real – and yes, the latter does exist IMO) anti-Israel bias in the media has little impact on that front.

Either way: the poll makes for very sorry reading.

    • “A further underlining of the fact that men tend to be more bigoted than women” – a bigoted statement from a dumb bigot.

  4. The Guardian: … a figure which rose to 39% of those participants who identified themselves as Ukip voters.
The Independent: The Labour MP Luciana Berger was last year the subject of death threats and an antisemitic Twitter hate campaign sparked by a neo-Nazi group.
None of the words “Muslim”, “Respect”, “Ken Livingstone”, Stop The War Coalition”, “PSC”, “BDS”, “UCU”, etc. appear anywhere in these articles.

BTW An UKIP canditate who on twitter published an antisemitic comment has been kicked out from the party. David Ward, Baroness Tonge (Libdem) and Jeremy Corbyn (Labour) continue to spew their hate of the Jews undisturbed. Mr Ward last performance is his reaction to the Paris events.
A spokesperson for the Lib Dem confirmed to i100.co.uk Ward still takes the whip for the party.

  5. a) Where in the poll to 82% of ‘British Jews’ think that boycotts of Israel are antisemitic?
    b) Why “British Jews” in quotes?
    c) “They’re the same 82% who believe Israel has a ‘ right to exist’ ” – yes, like most of the civilised world.
    d) The 82% who feel media bias against Israel fuels anti-Semitism you label as “bigoted”??

    Look who’s talking.

  6. Maybe they should conduct the exact same poll among Guardian readers. Should be interesting to see how “enlightened” they really are.

  7. Let’s play Jeopardy:

Answer: “17% of Britons believe that “Jews think they are better than other people”

Question: Name 17% of Britons that Jews are better than.

  8. I’ve been reading newspapers since I’m a little kid. In that time I’ve never seen war coverage more blatantly atrocious and biased than the media’s coverage of the Gaza war. And the embarrassing headline examples shown in the article above all had the purpose of convincing an already discombobulated public that Israel was somehow the barbaric aggressor. It’s all so tawdry, disgusting and shameful. What a bunch of $5 whores.

    • Sorry Jeff but,
“I’ve been reading newspapers since I’m a little kid.”
means that you read newspapers because you are a little kid.
Far be it from me to be unkind, even to a retired minstrel in the colonies, but I suspect you are somewhat mature in years and not a ‘little kid’. Or do you really see yourself as CiFWatch’s very own ‘Peter Pan’?

  9. The British press is horrible. Not just on this issue, but on everything. The Island that gave us Hume, Mill, and Shakespeare also produced Jenny Tonge.
