UK Media Watch prompts revision to Guardian claim that Israel launched war to avenge teens’ murder

As we noted in a recent post, a March 16th Guardian video story (Could the Israeli left beat Bibi?) co-produced and narrated by Phoebe Greenwood included this claim at the 1:14 mark:

In July, 2014, Israel launched a military offensive in Gaza. Netanyahu said this was in retaliation for the kidnap and murder of three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank.

This of course is flat-out wrong. Israel launched Operation Protective Edge to stop rocket attacks from Gaza, and Netanyahu never once claimed that it was in “retaliation for the kidnap and murder of three Israeli teenagers”.

After contacting Guardian editors, the following addendum was added below the video.

note

We commend Guardian editors for the clarification.

  1. Typically Guardian – an apology of sorts, made with bad grace. See in particular Deborah Orr. Mind you, they are like this about everything. Unable to be sorry about anything means unable to learn – that is partly why the newspaper reads as though it was written by six form teenagers.

Still – well done for getting them to force this out from between their teeth.

  2. UK Media Watch is curiously silent about two major talking points concerning Netanyahu’s campaign in the UK media:

1 His racist comment about ‘droves of Arabs’ seeking to exercise their democratic rights.

2 His rejection of the two state solution – previously committed to in 2009.

Could it be that you are embarrassed and just hope that we didn’t notice?

    • 1. Arab MKs open support for terrorist against Jews is not racist?
      2. 2SS is dead. Killed by Hamas rockets from Gaza and Arafat’s 2nd Intifada. Killed by repeated refusals to any peace offer made by Israel in return for peace.

Could it be that this conflict is not about the the so called occupation but about Israel’s very existence? Could it be you are too naive and blind to see what is obvious to anyone living in the Middle East?

Could it be you only care about Arab lives when Israel can be blamed?

Could it be that you only support Muslim Jihad against Jews because you a) hate Jews b) foolishly think they will be sated with Jewish blood and forget about you when they finish with the Jews?

      • Sencar and the silence of the guilty. Can’t remember when you or any of your ideological fellow travellers on the self-righteous anti-Israeli left ever acknowledged the Palestinian rejection of Israel’s offer of 100% of the Gaza Strip and 97% of the West Bank (including East Jerusalem) as the main stumbling block in a two state solution. Your prejudice against Israel and blinkered obsession with all its iniquities reeks of anti-Jewish malice and European arrogance.

    • What I find embarrassing is the malicious assertion by you (of course!) and others desperately trying to implicate the State of Israel, the first state in the region to institute universal suffrage, in historically denying the franchise to its citizens in order to libel Netanyahu as an out and out racist in order to undermine and delegitimize his electoral victory.

      • I don’t wish for a moment to “delegitimize [Netanyahu’s] electoral victory”. The victory simply confirms that the majority of Israelis are racist and opposed to a just settlement with the Palestinians.

        • How many dead Israelis will be considered a just settlement?

          2 Intifadas were not enough?

Rockets from Gaza is not enough?

Every time we make concessions and take risks for peace we get murdered by your beloved Palestinians.

If wanting to stay alive is racist then count me in.

        • “The victory simply confirms that the majority of Israelis are racist and opposed to a just settlement with the Palestinians.”

          It does?
I’ll tell you what, sencar, that wild assertion plus the many others you’ve made here over the years (not to mention your connection with your New Zealand fascist friends) confirms and reconfirms for me that this is all a matter of your own racism, honed, and handed down to you by your forebears over a period of centuries.

I’ll tell you something else. I don’t think that the recent and trendy nationality of the ‘ancient’ Palestinian people, i.e., Soviet inspired stand-in proxy and fodder established to counter claims to Jewish independence and dignity in the historically Jewish homeland, are committed to a just solution for the Israeli Jews. But I don’t have to just think it – they’ve proven it time after time. How many offers for statehood have they turned down? Desperate, oppressed peoples do not turn down offers of independence. They grab them. Yet the Palestinians have turned down every such offer along the lines that the international community has said is acceptable and expected as a just solution, most of the “West Bank” and Gaza with a share of Jerusalem, going back to UNSC resolutions 242 and 338. The Palestinians use the opportunity to blow up pizzerias filled with Jewish children. What kind of liar does one need to be to claim that the former British Mandate with borders never seen before in history constitutes all of “historic Palestine” the ancient and exclusive homeland of a particular Arab people whom no one had ever heard of? What kind of people push such lies?

Desperately oppressed people don’t allow their own people to sit in refugee camps on what they claim as their own territory and then declare that they will not be offered citizenship when statehood comes about, but will rather have to be forced on another neighboring state. This is the Arab position, sencar. This along with having a Jew free Palestinian Arab State in a place known for 3,000 plus years as Judea.

Thanks for reminding me to be grateful I’m not you.

        • Sencar would you please to tell us racist Israelis what do you consider a just settlement?

          • Well Peter, a truly just settlement would mean an Israel for all of its people – just like every other country in the world that claims to be democratic. Equal rights for all. No privileged immigration for Jews who have never been near Israel. No exclusive rights for Jews to Israeli land. Education, health care and welfare benefits based on need rather than race, etc etc.

Failing that a two state solution based on 1967 borders would be OK. But two states means two STATES, not an emasculated set of Bantustans next to the most powerful country in the region.

It is not just Netanyahu who would deny either of these solutions. No significant Israeli Jewish politician is offering anything near. The sainted supporter of two states,Tzipi Livni, offered next to nothing when she was the negotiator. Palestinian representatives begged for fig-leaf concessions and were denied. She went on to glorify the slaughter of Cast Lead: “Hamas now understands that when you fire on its citizens it responds by going wild – and this is a good thing”.

            • Isn’t a robust response to Hamas terrorism justified, and a very good thing?
Don’t dodge the question, just answer yes or no, and thus oppose or support Hamas terror tactics —in fact, their entire strategy, since they offer little else.

            • Well Peter, a truly just settlement would mean an Israel for all of its people – just like every other country in the world that claims to be democratic.
Using other words – a country without Jews.
No privileged immigration for Jews who have never been near Israel. Giving your kind the opportunity to kill, persecute and oppress the Jews without a safe haven for them.
No exclusive rights for Jews to Israeli land. Education, health care and welfare benefits based on need rather than race, etc etc.
Bullshit on the tenth power what you learned from the Electronic Intifada or from the Guardian.
Failing that a two state solution based on 1967 borders would be OK.
The only small problem that there are not such borders only ceasefire-lines and not 1967 but 1949.
But two states means two STATES, not an emasculated set of Bantustans next to the most powerful country in the region.
To give them the freedom to terrorize Israel and attack it with modern armies. I understand your dreams sencar, Keep up dreaming.
Your rant about the negotiations is so laughable that I won’t waste my time to react.

              • “Using other words – a country without Jews”

Why would an Israel for all its people be “without Jews”? Seems to me 80% of its population would still be Jewish.

Incidentally I’d recommend Jonathan Freedland’s article in today’s Guardian as an expose of Netanyahu’s sickening racism and double u turn on the two state solution. Some politicians one just disagrees with; Netanyahu turns the stomach of any decent person.

                • Why would an Israel for all its people be “without Jews”? Seems to me 80% of its population would still be Jewish.
Abbas insists to return five million “refugees”. Without this no peace accord. Don’t tell me you didn’t know this.
Freedland’s article, lies, smears and impotent rage in the most antisemitic rag in Europe tells the Israelis that they voted for the better candidate. The article is only for the consumption of your kind of Jew-haters.

                • Netanyahu’s ‘racism’ is a cookie-cutter canard. Only malevolent reading can ascribe any racism to a sober political observation: the ‘left’ was bussing Arabs to the polling stations in a last-ditch attempt to prevent Natanyahu winning.
If anything, Herzog’s automatic assumption that any reference to Arabs must be a racist one, is very revealing about his own racism.

                  • You must be really sorry sencar. It was a secret not agreement but understanding what Abbas reneged publicly at the 2008 peace talks and left without even suggesting a compromise. Try harder. And please try not to make reference to the Guardian – it is an anti-Israeli propaganda rag. BTW its contributors just attacked violently a British political leader with his small children. You must be proud to your fascistic thug sources.

            • let the Gazans build up something that can resemble a State before you start talking about them having one .
Don’t spend all the $$$$ on underground military infrastructure and hate propaganda and gangsterism . Try roads , free media , regular elections , gay and women’s rights , multi culturalism , law and order , all them kind of things . Not expecting anything perfect , but just a start would be sweet and nice . You know, plant tomato’s in them greenhouses kind of thing .

Hang on, if that happened then perhaps….Hamas would lose its iron fist on power …………… oooh cant have that . Cos Sencar approves of Hamas as symbol of resistance to Israel . Cannot see beyond that .

            • “Palestinian representatives begged for fig-leaf concessions and were denied” – that’s spelled LIE.

        • Miranda and a few other idiots have tried very hard to fill your troll shoes, but they’re either A) trying to be intelligent while failing or B) actually seeming to notice when their arguments get shredded. It’s wonderful to have you back here because you’re the best “stupid troll in denial” this site has ever seen. Keep up the (word other than good) work!

        • “The victory simply confirms that the majority of Israelis are racist and opposed to a just settlement with the Palestinians” –

This is a real puzzler: is Sencar more of an imbecile, or more of a Jew-hater?

    • Oh, and by the way, sencar, always feel free to hijack the discussion with an off topic comment.

    • Sencar obviously doesn’t give enough of a crap about the Guardian being a crappy news organization because, to Sencar, the real problem are tohse racist Joos who won’t just kill themselves, and instead cause the whole wide world to enter a 3rd World War.

Poor Sencar! His lunacy is as sad as his shitty life.

    • Which rejection? Please quote the complete sentence what Netanjahu said and tell what is wrong with not to cede territory to Hamas, Islamic Djihad and IS. The day the IDF leaves, Hamas will depose the PLO, so you as antisemite support this, I suppose.

      • Here’s what he said:

““I think that anyone who moves to establish a Palestinian state and evacuate territory gives territory away to radical Islamist attacks against Israel,” Netanyahu said. “The left has buried its head in the sand time and after time and ignores this, but we are realistic and understand.”

When asked if that meant a Palestinian state would not be established if he is elected, Netanyahu replied: “Indeed.””

        • He said that now it is impossible to allow the establishment of a Palestinain state and he was right. But we are accustomed this kind of lies. Try something new sencar.

          • Please give the quote from before the election that includes the qualifying “now”. Every commentator I’ve seen (and not just from the left) assumed his rejection of two states was unequivocal. That is until after the election when everything was stood on its head. Netanyahu rediscovered two states and declared that he would rule for all Israelis when previously he was using the threat of Arab votes to scare the extreme right back to Likud.

It is Netanyahu’s total untrustworthiness (illustrated by the above) that makes him something of a pariah amongst western politicians.

            • It is Netanyahu’s total untrustworthiness (illustrated by the above) that makes him something of a pariah amongst western politicians.
The joke of the century. Do you know any trustworthy Western politicians sencar? Apart from Hitler – who did what he promised.
What makes Netanyahu a pariah among Western politicians is his ability to stand up to pressure, his success to lead the Israeli economy to overcome the international financial crash whose effect even today is visible in every Western country apart from Israel and his talent to win three consecutive elections.
That is until after the election when everything was stood on its head. Netanyahu rediscovered two states and declared that he would rule for all Israelis when previously he was using the threat of Arab votes to scare the extreme right back to Likud.
As you learned from the media. Luckily the media has no hands, it would not only lie, it could steal too. For your help I will give you an other reason to consider Netanyahu and Israel an international pariah by the “international community” and the human rights warriors of the UN: Israel singled out at UN for women’s right violations. The vice-chair of this honorable human rights commission is the mass murderer Muslim dictator of Sudan. Your impotent rage against Israel is simply amusing and funny sencar.

        • Back in a 2009 speech at Bar Ilan University calling for peace, Netanyahu offered a different view of a Palestinian state.
“In my vision of peace, there are two free peoples living side by side in this small land, with good neighborly relations and mutual respect, each with its flag, anthem and government, with neither one threatening its neighbor’s security and existence,” he said at the time, adding that Palestine would have to be demilitarized and recognize Israel as a Jewish state.

As simple as that as the PLA rejected both conditions and formed a political alliance with Hamas, so there won`t be a Palestinian state unless conditions were met. Ask your friends at the PLA and Hamas.

          • Fritz Wunderlich –

Netanyahu’s 2009 Bar Ilan speech was certainly the closest he ever came to declaring that a Palestinian state was possible. But, even then, he made it crystal clear that this didn’t mean a SOVEREIGN state – just as he’d consistently been doing up to that point and has done ever since.

You quote verbatim that part of his speech which envisioned “two free peoples living side by side… each with its flag, anthem and government” but omitted to quote in full this important rider:

“Any area in Palestinian hands has to be demilitarized with solid security measures ….We want peace. And, to ensure peace we don’t want them to bring in missiles or rockets OR HAVE AN ARMY, OR CONTROL OF AIRSPACE, OR MAKE TREATIES with countries like Iran, or Hezbollah.” (My capitals for emphasis.)

In other words, Netanyahu was insisting that Israel must effectively retain control over its neighbour’s security, its conduct of foreign affairs, and even the ability of those neighbours to travel freely.

I doubt any people on earth – least of all the people of Israel – would regard such terms as the granting of “statehood” if placed on offer to them.

And 2009 was only the CLOSEST Netanyahu came. In every single other pronouncement I’ve found – either from him directly, or Likud under his leadership – the message to Palestinians and the world at large has been quite unequivocal:

1996 Likud Platform: “The Government of Israel … will oppose the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.”

1999 Likud Platform: “The Government of Israel flatly rejects the establishment of a Palestinian Arab state west of the Jordan.”

2014 Press conference statement: “I think the Israeli people understand now what I always say: that there cannot be a situation, under any agreement, in which we relinquish security control of the territory west of the River Jordan.”

2015 Likud Platform: “The Government of Israel flatly rejects the establishment of a Palestinian Arab state west of the Jordan River. The Palestinians can run their lives freely in the framework of self-rule, but not as an independent and sovereign state… Thus, for example, in matters of foreign affairs, security, immigration and ecology, their activity shall be limited in accordance with imperatives of Israel’s existence, security and national needs.”

That’s hardly the record of a man who believes merely that Palestinian statehood isn’t possible “now”. It’s remained Netanyahu’s dogged position for the past twenty years.

            • Miranda- Do tell what the Palestinian leadership has done over the past 20 years to establish a Palestinian state. Do tell all the peaceful measures brought to the table by the Palestinians. I eagerly await what evidence you have to present that the Palestinian leadership is interested in a dual-state solution with the Israelis.

Until then, consider yourself the joke you’ve made yourself.

            • ““Any area in Palestinian hands has to be demilitarized with solid security measures ….We want peace. And, to ensure peace we don’t want them to bring in missiles or rockets OR HAVE AN ARMY, OR CONTROL OF AIRSPACE, OR MAKE TREATIES with countries like Iran, or Hezbollah.” –

Of course, to a POS like you, Jews having the foresight to prevent a genocidal neighbour having the power to attack them in force is a bad thing. Those impertinent Jews!

NRG REPORTER: Some of the people are deciding between Bayit Hayehudi and Likud. You said your Bar Ilan speech isn’t relevant. Are you the same as Bennett in your ideology that you won’t create a Palestinian state?
PM NETANYAHU: I think that anyone who goes to create today a Palestinian state and turns over land, is turning over land that will be used as a launching ground for attacks by Islamist extremists against the State of Israel.
That’s the actual reality that has been formed here in recent years. Whoever ignores this is sticking his head in the sand. The Left does this, sticks their head in the sand, time after time. We’re realists and understand. The test is who will form the next government. I’m not going to give in. They wouldn’t amass the heavy campaign against me if they thought that I’m not the barrier. They understand this. We’ve stood up against strong pressure and we’ll continue to do so.
NRG REPORTER: If you are the prime minister, a Palestinian state won’t be created?
          PM NETANYAHU: Indeed.

Bibi in 2009 was prepared to accept a deal little different from those offered by Ehud Barak in 2001 and Ehud Olmert in 2008.

          http://www.i24news.tv/en/news/

Bibi has not changed, the Arab world has changed, for the worse.

        • Well this transcription proves the bias of the international media, fuck them for their antisemitic war propaganda.

    • Because it wasn’t racist. The United ARAB List were being driven to the polls at US TAXPAYER EXPENSE. This would be equal to the President of the US calling on Democrats to get out and vote because Germany was paying for Republicans to be driven to the polls.

Most Israelis reject the three or four state ‘solution’ and it happens to violate several Israeli laws. It is our land and we refuse to allow the Islamofascist colonists to have it.

We are not embarrassed – you are just stupid

  3. If Israel went to war to avenge the murder of teens there is nothing wrong or immoral about this. The enemy must learn. If they kidnap and murder our children we will go to war. We will take revenge. It won’t be just an eye for an eye. It will be thousand eyes for every eye.

This is the only language they understand.

If this is the narrative she wants to believe it is good. Let this be a lesson to anti-Semites all over the world that Jewish blood does not cheep.

  4. the majority of Israelis are racist
Welll, if you claim that a majority is racist, you antisemiite certainly don´t mean the Druze and Arab Israeli, do you?

    • When sencar says the majority of Israelis are racist, what is really being deployed is a traditional European trope of moral superiority over the Jews. Sencar measures his own identity by his moral and existential antithesis – Israel and its Jewish inhabitants.

Sencar is a self-styled paragon of left-wing anti-racist, peaceful internationalism, and Israel in stark contrast is the exact opposite; the one and only truly racist, warmongering, ultra-nationalist usurping entity that lies at the heart of all the world’s problems.

Just as the Jews were the Jesus-killing anti-Christs to Sencar’s medieval Christian ancestors, the internationalist rootless cosmopolitans to his nationalist forefathers, the ruthless communist oppressors to European fascists, and the money-grubbing exploiters to communist egalitarians, they now fit the latest fashionable projection that most makes Sencar and like-minded Europeans feel good about themselves.

Its true, the Jews are nothing like you Sencar.

      • sencar is not going to let the facts or the history get in his way. The organ he needs to battle his disease is the very one that is infected.

  5. If it had been revised to ‘massive rocket attacks on Israeli population centres’, I would see that differently. As it is, it still blind sides any fair reader. A revision of sorts. With bad grace.
