Take a stand against ‘antisemitic’ conference at Southampton University

Cross posted from Academic Friends of Israel

Southampton University, one of 24 members of the British Russell Group of Institutions which have distinguished themselves as research-led universities of international quality  is to hold a conference on the 17-19 April 2015 questioning both the legal and moral right of the state of Israel to exist.

The conference “International Law and the State of Israel: Legitimacy,Responsibility and Exceptionalism” is described by the organisers as “the first of its kind and constitutes a ground-breaking historical event … it is unique because it concerns the legitimacy in international law of the Jewish State of Israel.”

The event will be addressed by over 80 academics from Universities around the world, including the USA, Britain, Australia and Israel. The organisers, who include Southampton law professor Oren Ben-Dor and George Bisharat, professor at the University of California Hastings College of Law;  have said that the conference will “engage controversial questions concerning the manner of Israel’s foundation and its nature, including ongoing forced displacements of Palestinians and associated injustices.” Ben-Dor and Bisharat have committed themselves in the past to the delegitimisation of the State of Israel and its replacement with a Palestinian State.

The majority of speakers at this one-sided conference support a boycott of Israel include Richard Falk, the former United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories and  anti-Zionist Israeli academic Ilan Pappe.

Criticising Israeli policies is acceptable in debate, but denying its right to exist veers into Antisemitism.  As French Prime Minister Manuel Valls declared: “Antisemitism, this old European disease…hides itself behind a fake anti-Zionism.”  It discriminates against the Jewish people, denying them the right to self-determination which is enshrined in international law. Such historic prejudice lies behind much BDS activity.

In deference to the principle of freedom of speech, The Academic Friends of Israel are not calling for cancellation of the conference.  Nor are we calling for a more balanced program. Such bigotry cannot be balanced.

Please sign our petition which calls on the University of Southampton to distance itself from the upcoming conference by removing it from campus, in order to avoid giving the event credibility and official approval to bigotry and Antisemitism.

A fantastic antisemitic nutter, commenting the petition of the Academics as follows
It’s a pretty tragic state of affairs when free speech is stifled in Israel’s names.
No state on Earth has a right to exist. Israel isn’t special.

but the only subject of his block is israel, no other state and its legitimacy.

    • If I followed the blog correctly, Noam /Avram used false monikers, false blogs etc., he has a lot of time to spend, the so called anarchist, giving anarchism a bad name.

  2. A conference that will “engage controversial questions concerning the manner of Israel’s foundation and its nature…” Wow. That sounds like loads of fun and an interesting debate about such a universally relevant and truly timeless topic – not at all like a bunch of left-wing academics jerking themselves off for a bunch of left-wing college students to jerk of to. We can only pray that such circle-jerks, I mean conferences, can steer the next generation of individuals in higher education to avoid the arts and sciences in order to pursue more objective knowledge, such as why Israel lacks legitimacy. I sure hope that the University of Southampton transfers funds away from cancer research and their math department to focus on support for this unquestionably unique, essential, and influential conference questioning an issue that has plagued humanity since the dawn of time!

  3. Weird how in the history of the world, it’s the extremely right wing Nationalist fronts that have accused Jews of infiltration that was punishable by death. Point is, as much as you want to think that Liberals are the people who go to college, I can guarantee you that Richard Falk, for example, would be much happier in stringent Saudi Arabia than he would in liberal Israel. And not just because of the amount of Jews, but in terms of the amount of freedom proffered to Jews.

Liberals have stood up for Jews, and Jews have been known as Western Liberals, no matter what some Right Wing whiner has to say.

      • Left wingers do that? Like Hitler, right? Because he was a vegetarian and hated smoking, ergo, Hitler was a liberal.

And not some right wing nationalistic fascist fuck.

        Got it.

        • Try reading. Who mentioned liberals?
Maybe you’ll tell us next that communists and other extreme socialists have never accused Jews of being mosters of capitalism.
Read a little history. Just a thought.

          • Gee, Leah, it seems that semantics are such a huge issue with you, yet you can’t tell the difference between Individuals and Modes of Thought. Some Commies are okay, because some Commies aren’t egomaniacal, power hungry fucks. Endorsing Socialized Medicine doesn’t mean that I support the Castros, but it is interesting that the average Cuban has access to much better healthcare than the average American.

You rarely bring anything of interest to the table, Leah. Just a thought.

  4. hmmmm
easy going discussion on who hates Jews and from what political stance .
Kouf – don’t diss veggies grrrrrr . Am like Conan the Vegetarian when I eats me spinach hee hee
So where are we , the Right has anti Semitism, the Left has anti Semitism, the centre Liberals some of them are anti Semitic .Or worse, no backbone .
Add onto that the Catholics, the white supremacists, and the Muslims and a few nutty Jews . The rest of the world hasn’t met a Jew yet. There are not that many of us around . Throw in a couple of eons of anti Semitism and oppression and Jews are basically fricked relying on a few liberals . Oh bugger I seem to have answered the question on why Jews should move from Europe .

  5. Back OT ..
Its tiring standing up fighting anti Semitism . Its a piss off getting called an effin Yid 1000 times on the internet . You write letters to organisations and they probably bin them . You complain to a ‘respectable organisation’ and no one replies . When you hear a comment on a train or bus and you say that its rude and racist someone tries to hit you . The police don’t really respond effectively . The sole Jew in a class at school accepts bullying and anti Semitism in order to go to school , The newspapers print crap daily , the BBC publishes crap daily , security at synagogues , shops refusing to serve Jews , mad vitriolic BDSers. . If you said a word against Islam you get lambasted and called a racist. if you say an anti Semitic statement its called free speech and fair comment .

That’s the UK unfortunately in 2015
No man wants to bow their head when they walk down the street .
The issue is not when Jews protest against anti Semitism. I wait for the day when non Jews protest against anti Semitism . Most people just don’t care cos it doesn’t affect them , even if they see or instinctively know its wrong
