Indy seeks the ‘wisdom’ of Juan Cole in story on Israeli government shake-up

As we’ve noted previously, Juan Cole is an American academic and blogger who has called Israel a fascist state whose behavior was partly responsible for 9/11. He’s also advanced antisemitic narratives about dual loyalty, and has warned his followers about the dangers of unchecked ‘Jewish power’. (He also has been a Guardian contributor)

Naturally, the Independent highlighted his ‘analysis’ – and only his analysis – in a story about the appointment of Avigdor Lieberman as Israel’s new defense minister.

Here are the final two paragraphs of the report, by Matthew Payton.

Professor Juan Cole from the University of Michigan, an expert on Middle Eastern politics, described him as a “far-right extremist”, telling the Salon: “There is no European cabinet minister who comes close to Lieberman’s far, far right positions, and if there were he or she would be boycotted by the other Europeans.”

He added that in his opinion the current politics of the Israeli government has no real comparison other than in Hungary’s neo-fascist party.

And, when it comes people with a visceral hatred of Israel, Cole ‘has no real comparison’ other than bloggers at places like Mondoweiss and Electronic Intifada.

Of course, criticizing Lieberman is one thing.

Smearing Israel by highlighting the intellectually unserious suggestion – by a commenter with a track record which includes the use of antisemitic tropes – that the state is on par with neo-fascist parties in Europe is quite another.

Here’s our backgrounder on Cole.

  1. This is from Cole’s bio: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~jrcole/jcpers.htm,
“At the University of Michigan, he teaches courses on the modern history of the Middle East and on South Asia. He regularly teaches History 241, America and Middle Eastern Wars. He also offers a survey, History 443 Modern Middle East History. For graduate students he offersr History 664 Studies on the Modern Middle East, History 749 Seminar on the Modern Middle East, and History 793 The Study of the Near East, and has co-taught History 615 Comparative World History.”

That is what tiresome promoters and apologists for the Arabist agenda, such as sencar, Miranda, and Gabriel, will try to use to support their “arguments.” They’ll undoubtedly try to find some justification for the Indy, relying solely on Cole. This is, of course, convenient.

However, their silliness is easily refuted as New Gingrich possesses a Phd in history and has also been a history professor. Take the qualifications of one for granted, then take the other.

    • His classes have those titles because you can’t yet say, “Juan cole teaches several courses in antisemitism.”

  2. “Here are the final two paragraphs of the report, by Matthew Payton” – I first read this as Monty Python, but there is no comparison. The latter are sane human beings.

  3. “an American academic and blogger who has called Israel a fascist state whose behavior was partly responsible for 9/11 … also advanced antisemitic narratives about dual loyalty, and has warned his followers about the dangers of unchecked ‘Jewish power’ …also has been a Guardian contributor”

Sorry, was I meant to be surprised? I’d have thought that his background qualified him perfectly to write for The Guardian.

  4. “There is no European cabinet minister who comes close to Lieberman’s far, far right positions, and if there were he or she would be boycotted by the other Europeans.”

And how many European states have Arab countries in a full state of war against them?

Juan Cole is THE reason Ann Arbor is such an Israel bashing shit zone.

  5. This only shows that the good professor not only clueless about Israel but similarly ignorant about Hungary too.

  6. Juan Colle may have to eat these words:

““There is no European cabinet minister who comes close to Lieberman’s far, far right positions, and if there were he or she would be boycotted by the other Europeans.””

Of course, if you do not count anti-Semites like the Swedish FM Walstrom as far right.

Not only are there already several far, far right European Cabinet ministers – -unless you consider only the major European countries and not countries like Poland as European – but shortly I imagine that there will be European Prime Minsters for whom Lieberman’s views are too liberal.

  7. When Trump is elected President of the US, I hope that Fascist Professor Juan Cole leaves the US – not taking the easy way out by moving to Canada, but moving to Mexico.

Let’s see how well Juan does living in El Chapo’s Drug Cartel hijacked Mexico.

  8. Juan Cole “has warned his followers about the dangers of unchecked ‘Jewish power’. ”
An academic with followers? Tell me the West isn’t sick and getting sicker.
I seem to remember that the antisemites infiltrated the education system in Germany before the rise of Hitler.

Juan Cole has “followers.” What was it that Christopher Hitchens said? The sinister leading the silly.

Seeking “wisdom” from Juan Cole is like looking for filet mignon to come out the cow’s ass.

  9. Juan Cole a racist… a bigot… an anti-semitic lying low life creep…. crazy conspiracy theorist who keeps slandering Israel….And to top it all he is also a professor…..What a great Resume…..Almost every University in the US EU/UK would grab him with open arms…….
