UK Media Watch prompts correction to Guardian claim on Jerusalem construction

Last week we posted about a Guardian article by Donald Macintyre on a confidential report by EU Heads of Mission in Jerusalem which allegedly recommended that the EU should “step up efforts to halt trade” with “illegal Jewish settlements”

Macintyre’s report provided the following background in an effort to contextualize such “illegal” settlement activity:

Besides continued settlement in Arab East Jerusalem – which intensified again this month with an announcement by Binyamin Netanyahu’s government of 840 new Jewish homes in East Jerusalem and 560 in nearby Maale Adumim…

However, as we noted in our post, there have not been “840 new Jewish homes” approved for east Jerusalem:

We demonstrated that in fact only 240 are for Jewish neighborhoods. The rest (around 600) are for Palestinians in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Safafa – a fact, of course, which undermines the narrative of the story.

We contacted Guardian editors and complained about the erroneous figures.

Editors upheld our complaint and revised the passage in question.

It now reads:

Besides continued settlement in Arab East Jerusalem – which intensified again this month with an announcement by Binyamin Netanyahu’s government of 240 new Jewish homes in East Jerusalem and 560 in nearby Maale Adumim…

They also added the following addendum at the bottom of the article:

addendum

We commend Guardian editors on the correction.
