Economist claim that Bibi's office approves Israel HaYom headlines begins to unravel (UPDATE)

We posted yesterday on an article in The Economist (A Tough Deal to Swallow, April 8th), about the framework agreement putatively reached in Lausanne, which suggested that Jerusalem was now sending signals about a possible military attack on Iran’s nuclear sites.
The Economist attempted to explain the significance of a recent warning by Major General Shefer, in an Israel Hayom interview, that the military option is evidently back on the table by noting that the newspaper’s owner and editors are close to Netanyahu.

Yisrael Hayom is a freesheet owned by Sheldon Adelson, a casino mogul and supporter of Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister. Its headlines are routinely approved by the prime minister’s office.

As we noted yesterday, it is of course undeniable that Israel Hayom is staunchly pro-Netanyahu. However, we have never before come across the specific charge – anywhere in the Israeli media – that the paper’s headlines are actually approved by the prime minister’s office.
We contacted editors at The Economist to ask about the source for this claim, but haven’t yet received a reply.
However, our colleagues at Presspectiva were in touch with a highly placed source at Israel HaYom who categorically denied the charge leveled by The Economist.
We also contacted Mark Regev, spokesperson for the prime minister’s office, who similarly stated that The Economist’s accusation is completely false.
We’ll continue to update you as this story develops.
