Israel haters arrested outside Sodastream-owned shop in Brighton.

Cross posted by London-based blogger Richard Millett

As many as eight anti-Israel activists were arrested yesterday outside Israeli-owned Ecostream in Brighton, on England’s south coast. Ecostream belongs to Sodastream, which has a factory on the West Bank. Although Sodastream employs many Palestinians the anti-Israel lobby prefers to see the factory shut down, thus imperiling the livelihoods of Sodastream’s Israeli and Palestinian workforce.

Every Saturday anti-Israel activists flock to Ecostream to call for its boycott. They are always met by the stoical counter-protesting of Sussex Friends of Israel. Yesterday, however, the anti-Israel activists were swelled by the presence of Palestine Solidarity Campaign affiliated trade unionists from the NHS, NUT, GMB, NUJ and the University of Brighton.

But tempers rose and not before long the number of anti-Israel activists was depleted as protester after protester was led away to the back of a police van. A heartbreaking sight, indeed.

Then the police issued a “section 14” meaning both sides were kept apart and liable to arrest should anyone step outside their own zone. The remaining anti-Israel activists were restricted to the other side of the busy road opposite Ecostream and could, therefore, hardly be heard or seen for the remainder of the protest. Ecostream’s supporters stayed close to the shop.

Ecostream itself is a magical store. You can buy products that allow you to make your own carbonated drinks and you can refill your own bottles there with anything from honey, to olive oil to washing up liquid. Basically, cut down on your use of bottles and help the environment. Refilling is also vastly cheaper when there is no bottle to pay for.

Those of us who journeyed from London and other parts of England were very warmly received by Sussex Friends of Israel. Thanks to Harvey for driving a car load of us from London. It was good to see friends and meet new people and I also bought some lovely Palestinian olive oil from Ecostream.

Meanwhile, here are photos and footage of the action and photos from inside the Ecostream shop itself.

The first clip shows two of the alleged arrests and the second shows two trade unionists explaining how the presence of so many different trade unions protesting against Israel should make those supporting Israel “question themselves”. Well, that’s certainly an unbeatable argument if ever there was one:

  1. Adolf was a vegetarian that did not make him a nice person or anybody i would admire. Ecostream cannot green wash the occupation. Fritz the only democracy you like is where the Turkeys vote for christmas. It aint going to happen.

    • Well done Boo Boo.

You have managed to create a new language by merging meaningless gibberish with complete bollocks.

    • Aparthide state? yOu mean the one that Israeli arabs refuse the border to be changed so they will be part of the Palesitnian state,
Mohamed Samara, a chemical engineer and football coach who spoke with the Post, is a resident of Tira, an Israeli Arab city to the west of Rout 6. He said he is against Liberman’s plan.

“We are happy here; we have all the rights and live well and don’t want to be sacrificed,” said Samara.

“We do not want to be in a Palestinian state, under a new political area,” he said. “We work here,” he said, noting that his city has good relation with Jews.

Asked if he identifies with Palestinians in the West Bank, Samara responded that he has feelings for them and has some family members that live there.

However, at the same time Samara says he identifies with being an Israeli citizen.

Asked what percentage of residents of Tira would agree with his views, he responded, “90 percent.”

  2. Of course all Palestinians want to live in Palestine and nobody wants to be part of the Bantustan planned for them by the Zionists just like the ANC refused a seperate homeland behind that wall. Why are you surprised? A demographic time bomb.

    • Hey Boo Boo I am still waiting for you to substantiate your claim that clause 11 of Resolution 194 PROMISES a right of return.
Remember this from one of my posts yesterday?
“The EXACT words ‘Abu’ in clause 11 of Resolution 194, not some puerile attempt to divert attention away with a load of guff about Spain or anywhere else.”

Your silence Boo Boo confirms that you are either an idiot or a liar, or indeed more likely both.
As you have no credibility whatsoever, isn’t it time to invent a new ‘persona’?

Your puppeteer will have noticed by now that you are no longer fit for purpose, so Bye Bye Boo Boo.

    • Of course all Palestinians want to live in Palestine ?
You mean from the river to the sea? yes we know
Disturbing US poll: Most Palestinians refuse to accept idea of Israel as Jewish state, view peace talks, two-state solution as first step towards creation of one Palestinian state in area

  3. Gerald how many times have you read it? If you still do not get it, may be you are denser than you think? Everybody gets it. The UN General Assembly approves the resolution every year. What is your problem apart from being a bit on the dense side.

    • You’re missing the “live at peace” bit. It doesn’t say, “Ignore the fact they declare they want the country to disappear and all the Jews to go away and/or die, just let them and their children and their children’s children and their children’s children’s children (ad infinitum) come and live next door to you until they’re strong enough and numerous enough to kill you.”

    • Boo Boo keeping digging yourself into a bigger hole.

Watching your increasingly desperate attempts to avoid answering the question has now gone from mildly amusing to pathetic.
It is time your puppeteer put you out of your misery.

  4. cba After how long have you returned to your home in Palestine? Can you even count that far back? Go on amuse us? Zionism is a funny concept, son or grandson cannot return to his house but hey somebody who left that home 2000 years ago has the right to chuck the current occupants out and return. I see you are laughing. Good.

    • Were the world to impose a “right of return” similar to that advocated for the Palestinians to other instances of population transfer, millions of Moslems would be permitted to return to India and millions of Hindus to Pakistan. Entire populations of the Balkan states would have to be reshuffled.

Yet no international body advocates the return of Moslems to Greece or Bulgaria or ethnic Greeks to Turkey. And for a very good reason: Doing so would only reopen bitter past conflicts and lead to rivers of blood.

Only with respect to the Palestinians does the world harp on the “right of return.” Different rules apply to God’s little acre, which just happens to be the acre of the Jews. Rules developed for other nations that have been the subject of mass population transfers – India, Pakistan, Turkey, Greece, Czechoslovakia, and dozens of others – suddenly no longer apply when it comes to Israel.

UNRWA applies a far more expansive definition of refugee to Palestinians than that applied by UNHCR to refugees anywhere else in the world. According to UNRWA’s definition, an Egyptian, Jordanian, Lebanese, or Syrian citizen whose primary place of residence between June 1946 and May 1948 was within Israel’s 1949 armistice lines is classified as a refugee, even if he was only temporarily in the country in search of work.

The Palestinians were not the only ones to be uprooted by the fighting between Israel and invading Arab armies in 1948-49. As a result of anti-Jewish rioting in Arab countries in the wake of the war, between 600,000 and 800,000 Jews fled the Arab lands where they had lived for centuries and even millennia.

Such population exchanges are common following major religious or ethnic strife all around the world.

The “right of return” is just one example of the ways in which Palestinian refugees are treated differently from other war refugees. Nowhere is this more clearly illustrated than by the existence of two U.N. bodies for dealing with refugees – the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) deals exclusively with Palestinians; the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) is charged with responsibility for all other refugees around the globe. The mission of the UNHCR is to assist refugees to begin a new life As a consequence of its activities tens of millions of former refugees are no longer classified as “refugees” when they gain citizenship in their new host countries.

Of the tens of millions of refugees created by World War II and the grant of independence to India and Pakistan in 1947, all lost their refugee status, as far as the international community is concerned, decades ago. And the possibility of those former refugees returning to the lands of their birth would strike the international community with horror, for an attempt to do so would only unleash old ethnic and religious conflicts. We might as well discuss the return of North America to its original native inhabitants.

Only with respect to the Palestinians does the “right of return” continued to be discussed

are you laughing ? becuase I sure do

    • Seriously??? You think that a new immigrant to Israel just goes to the nearest home of an Arab and tells them to get out??? You’re a very confused person (being charitable).

My children were not born in the UK, but since their mother WAS born in the UK, they were eligible for British citizenship upon application. They didn’t have to go through the normal immigration procedures most people have to go through.

Israel’s Law of Return is similar to that. Jews are eligible for citizenship upon application. Others have to go through the normal immigration procedures that are similar to any other country in the world. Oh, and declaring you want to destroy the country you’re trying to immigrate to is generally grounds for exclusion, no matter where you’re applying.

(I have friends who lived for decades in Switzerland, and whose kids were born there. They finally applied for citizenship, and it was an EXTREMELY onerous–and expensive–proposition.)

  5. Howdy! This is my first conment here so I just wanted to
