Robert Fisk accuses B’nai Brith Canada of peddling lies “used by the Nazis”.

The latest column by Robert Fisk – the Independent’s “award-winning” Middle East correspondent – contains the usual distortionshalf-truths and fabrications, as well as an especially appalling smear of Canadian Jewry’s largest human rights organization, B’nai Brith.

The inspiration for his latest polemical tirade – oddly titled ‘How on earth can Israel tolerate this filth from B’nai Brith Canada?‘ – was an advert in the National Post.

Fisk begins:

Not long ago, I was handed the most outrageous, vile, dishonest and slanderous calumny uttered against the people of Canada. It was contained in a full-page advertisement in the National Post (founder, Conrad Black), a newspaper handed out – free, I’m happy to say – on my Air France flight out of Toronto. Here is the headline: “Almost 4 million Canadians are afflicted by this disease.”

Beneath this title is a half-page, very blurred and uncaptioned colour photo of a large crowd – they could be football supporters, rush-hour commuters in Vancouver, you name it; they are mostly white males but include women and with at least one dark-skinned man close to the camera. Beneath the picture, this incredible ad continues: “Left unchecked, it [the disease] can result in violence tendencies. Many times, those infected haven’t been diagnosed and may pass it on to their children, grandchildren, colleagues or friends. Please help stop the spread of this disease before it contaminates your community.”

the “disease” afflicting “almost 4 million Canadians” is “anti-Semitism” and this disgusting advertisement – published without comment by one of Canada’s leading right-wing newspapers – was produced by B’nai Brith Canada and the “Jewish Christian Alliance”.

Fisk fails to note that the advert’s claim is based on a well-publicized poll commissioned by Anti-Defamation League which, in gauging antisemitic attitudes around the word, determined that 14% of Canadians hold antisemitic views.

He then begins his tirade against the ‘false’ accusation of antisemitism:

In other words, this pro-Israeli Jewish group – whose exaggerations and hateful propaganda have been rightly condemned by Jewish Canadians – claims that four million of their fellow-countrymen and women are sick, racist neo-Nazis

Of course, B’nai Brith does not claim that 4 million Canadians are “neo-Nazi” style racists.  In fact, the group’s press release on the ADL poll contextualized levels of antisemitism in Canadian society quite soberly in arguing that “these results clearly show that Canadians are being exposed to mediums containing antisemitic messaging, since almost a third of respondents have little to no contact with the Canadian Jewish community directly”.  Another B’nai Brith press release on the ADL poll correctly noted that the levels of antisemitism in Canada are “relatively low” compared to other parts of the world.

Fisk continues:

Now let’s forget that B’nai Brith regards any criticism of the state of Israel – however justified, however mild, made by Jews and non-Jews alike – as anti-Semitic.

Again, this is a lie, one typically peddled by those who downplay antisemitism.  B’nai Brith has often used language which clearly distinguishes between legitimate criticism of Israel and that criticism which evokes anti-Semitic canards.  In fact, on the site of B’nai Brith Canada there’s a fact sheet by the group’s senior legal counsel David Matas which makes their position quite clear:

It is legitimate to criticize discriminatory practices wherever they are found, whether in Israel or elsewhere.

However, to criticize alleged discrimination only in Israel and in no other country of the world becomes a political act of selective criticism, itself a form of discrimination against Israel.

Fisk is fighting a straw man. As, there is no major Jewish organization we are aware of which has ever claimed – explicitly or implicitly – that “any criticism of Israel” is antisemitic.

Fisk’s rant continues:

Let’s forget previous protests by Jewish Americans against the organisation’s grotesque exaggerations. Let’s even ignore its equation of Palestinians with Nazis…

However, the ad in question did not equate “Palestinians with Nazis”, only the antisemitic goals of Radical Islamic groups (such as Hezbollah) with that of the Nazis.

Further in the article, after criticizing Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s condemnation of antisemitism, Fisk throws in a Nazi comparison of his own:

But what, we have to ask, possesses Israel’s “friends” to publish this pernicious material about 4 million “diseased” Canadians? Does B’nai Brith Canada not realise that these very same despicable lies were used by the Nazis in their hate propaganda against the Jews of Europe? In Hitler’s Germany, Jews were described as microbes. Jews, according to Julius Streicher, were “the carriers of disease and vermin among men”. In August 1941, Goebbels called Jews “the carriers of infectious diseases” and two weeks later referred to Jews as “parasites”. By November, he was calling them “lice”. But now, 4 million Canadians carry “disease”. Undiagnosed “infections” will be passed on to children and grandchildren. The “community” is in danger of being “contaminated”. If this stuff was not so revolting, it could be laughed off.

In addition to the shameful smear, his logic is stunning – and goes something like this:

  1. Nazi propagandists used the “disease” metaphor to characterize the threat posed by world Jewry.
  2. B’nai Brith Canada used the word “disease” to characterize the threat posed by anti-Jewish racism.
  3. Ergo, since both groups used the disease metaphor – albeit one to characterize Jews and another to characterize those who hate Jews – both are nonetheless guilty of using Nazi-style propaganda.

It really is stunning that the Independent – a newspaper which prides itself on being guided by “enlightenment values” – can ‘tolerate such filth’

Fisk is certainly correct about one thing: ‘If this stuff was not so revolting, it could be laughed off’!

  1. Although the Canadian government is exemplary in its attitude to both Israel and Antisemitism, it is quite true that a considerable proportion of Canadians do hold these Antisemitic views. I used to regularly visit the city of Kitchener/Waterloo in Ontario. There is a large population there of German origin – indeed Kitchener used to be called Berlin before WW1. I saw there on a market stall during the Oktoberfest photographs of Adolf Hitler being sold quite openly. In a small business development in a nearby town I had the misfortune to fall into conversation with a rather unpleasant individual who proudly offered to sell me for my own business in the UK a range of Nazi helmets that he boasted were very popular in that part of Ontario. Whilst I was there on one occasion David Irving was arranging to give a talk to a select group of German Canadians with whom he had apparently close connections.
Had Fisk been around at the time one wonders whether he would have wished to have been in the audience.

    • During World War II, Canada had by far the worst record of the Western nations when it came to taking in Jewish refugees. This was due to the political pressures exerted by an unholy alliance of the Anglo anti-Semites of Ontario, the French anti-Semites of Quebec and the Ukrainian anti-Semites of the prairie provinces. That together with the vicious anti-Semitism of F.C. Blair, the then Director of the Immigration Branch in Canada, and the anti-Jewish prejudices espoused by the Prime Minister of Canada, William Lyon Mackenzie King, meant that only a few thousand Jews were allowed into Canada between 1944 and 1945. Nothing better demonstrates this state of affairs than the words used by a senior immigration official when he was asked how many Jewish refugees should be allowed into Canada. “None is too many,” he replied.

The acclaimed book, None is Too Many: Canada and the Jews of Europe, 1933-1948 by Arbella and Troper tells the story of this ghastly episode in Canada’s history. I see that it is currently available at Amazon in the Kindle format.

      • Correction to my post above about “none is too many”. I wrote the following:

“only a few thousand Jews were allowed into Canada between 1944 and 1945.”

That should of course have been “between 1933 and 1945.”

    • Michael, Canada that itself is based on the colonization and extermination of the indigenous Canadians is partial to another colonizing enterprise that is Zionism today.

      • Well I didn’t in fact see to much extermination of first nations in Canada. Quite the contrary and indeed I haven’t seen too much of that in Israel either. The Palestinian population of about 750000 in 1923 (British census) is now 5.5 million including those who are Israeli citizens. Your reply to me is both contrived and misconceived.

      • The Arabs in the Mandate call themselves “Filistinians” which means Invader. Jews are from Judea and Arabs are from Arabia.

The colonists would be the Arabs. Whom have invaded, raped, enslaved and murdered the natives from Morocco to Iraq. They are the non-native colonists, but us.

In the last 66 years about 50,000 Arabs have died in all the conflicts. More than 50,000 Arabs have been exterminated by other Arabs in Syria THIS YEAR ALONE. The Arabs have established an empire based on rape, slavery and genocide. The Jews have NEVER persecuted anybody else.

        • The arabs in the mandate called themselves Syrian as they saw themselves part of Southern Syria. It was Jews under mandate who called themselves Palestinian .

    • Perhaps Michael, I am mistaken the Canada was always populated by the Europeans.Perhaps you would let me wonder why they are called Europeans. Have you spoken to many Indigenous Canadians or seen them lately? As for Palestinians only in the last two weeks 6 Palestinians have been killed by the IDF. Several hundred arrested and many Palestinian houses demolished. Palestinian members of the Knesset are threatened with expulsions.

      • Jane,
Care to name the many houses demolished in the past 2 weeks?
BTW, a house that had a tunnel dug underneath it does not qualify… One can classify it as self destruction.

I’ll be waiting for the name of location and family.
Until the day you’ll provide me with the answer please stick to the topic.

        • Itsik you must be right – here is the example of self destruction –
Occupied East Jerusalem – For the past two months, Hamzah Abu Terr has slept on the floor of his home. He gave his bed to his three small children whose room he was forced to destroy earlier this year, to avoid large demolition fines issued by the Israeli municipality.

“I had no choice,” said Hamzah, sitting on the couch at his home in East Jerusalem next to his eldest daughter. “It was either my hands or their bulldozers.”

The single father received a demolition order in 2001, after the extension – a kitchen and bedroom – to his one-room house was deemed illegal by the Jerusalem municipality. He spent the next 12 years fighting the order in Israeli courts, paying more than 100,000 shekels ($28,775) in fees and fines. He even had to sell his now ex-wife’s jewellery.

“I could not fight it anymore. I had to destroy it myself,” Hamzah told Al Jazeera. “The kids can’t understand this: Their father destroyed their room. They were angry, sad… confused.”

This pattern of illegal construction and demolition is common throughout East Jerusalem. According to the United Nations, a set of discriminatory laws, polices and practices applied to Palestinian residents makes building “legally” next to impossible.

          • Tehran Jane Itsik made a very simple request.
To refresh your memory it was “Care to name the many houses demolished in the past 2 weeks?”

So when exactly, in the last two weeks, was this case you cite?

            • That was an example of self destruction – Here is the record of the houses demolished in June of 2014 –
              17 June 2014 – OCHA oPt
The Israeli authorities demolished a house under construction in Ar Ras area in Idhna/Hebron governorate.
              09 June 2014 – OCHA oPt
Demolition by Israeli authorities of a residential house under construction in Far’un village, Tulkarm.
              02 June 2014 – OCHA oPt
Demolition of livelihood structures in Hizma and At Tur in Jerusalem.

              • Tehran Jane even with your poor grasp of the English language you can tell that you have not answered my question.

When, in the last two weeks, did the case you cited and named happen?

              • Jane,
Only the 17th example qualify to as in tha last 2 weeks.
1 case does not qualify as “many”.
Care to retract your comment and apologise to us all?
It will be the right honourable thing to do.
Sadly I doubt uou will since it appears you know not what honour is.

          • Don’t feed the strawman-eating troll fighting its own shadow behind a windmill.

Or is that some Dali painting I’m imagining there?

          • I’m not surprised that so-called “anti-Zionists” have the ability of understanding reality of mentally challenged butterfly so let me inform you about some basic facts of life:
            1. In the civilized world nobody can build anything without a building permit, If s/he did anyway the building will be demolished – in most countries the time given to legal attempts to delay it is much less than twelve years, the Israeli authorities have much more patience than their counterparts in any other country.
            2. How do you know that not Mr. Abu Terr’s neighbors are behind the denial of the permit? Maybe the extension disturbs their movements or whatever else reason?
            2. The building regulations are the results of decisions by a democratically elected city council representing the interests of every citizen living in the city. The opinion of the UN is not even a footnote in this matter. (BTW when will the UN start to scream about allowing to build Christian, Zoroastrian, Bahai, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and Jewish churches in Riyadh or Mecca?)

      • Jane,
        re: “the indigenous Canadians”
I’m pretty sure that the peoples and nations that inhabited what today is Canada prior to European settlement didn’t call themselves “the Canadians.” Quite a different situation from that of Palestine, (a foreign, European, non-indigenous name for the land of Israel), which was eventually invaded by Arabs. Perhaps, Jane, I am mistaken and this land was always populated by the Arabs. Perhaps you would let me wonder why they are called Arabs. In the past few weeks 3 Israeli jewish children were abducted by Arab colonizers (hostage taking is one of their various pathologies) who have also been launching barrages of rockets, supplied by your heroes in Tehran (a foreign Islamic imperialistic hellhole), at Israeli civilians in an effort to kill as many as possible and “take back” that which wasn’t theirs in the first place. It’s only a small strip of land, but hey, it’s not dominated by Arab/Muslim colonizers. It’s Arab imperialism in action, Jane, and it’s quite pathetic.
Suggestion: Rather than show up here just to get your fat, lazy ass kicked, just take out an ad in the personals.

      • Jane, perhaps you are being facetious. All citizens of Canada are called Canadians be they of European or Asian origin, Inuit or First Nations. Funnily enough the same thing applies to Israel. All citizens of Israel are Israeli be they European Jews, Mizrachi Jews, Falashas, Bedouin, Druze and, yes, Palestinian. There are no Palestinian members of the Knesset – they are Israelis, remember.

You seem to have a problem with colonists. I don’t know what your own antecedents are but I would venture to suggest that they were colonists too at some time. Britain itself was colonized by Celts, Romans, Saxons, Vikings, Jutes and Normans. Who can remember who came before the Celts? What about France – where are the Gauls now? Or Spain perhaps, does it not really belong to the Basques as descendants of the original Iberians? One could go on for ever.

Get used to the fact that people have migrated ever since Homo Sapiens stood erect in the African Rift Valley. It is the nature of our world and we are all descendants one way or another of migrants come colonizers. In the case of Israel the “colonists” to whom you refer descend from the inhabitants of that land over 2000 years ago a number of whom actually never left.

You appear to believe that all peoples are entitled to their own homeland…….but clearly with one notable exception. Guess who?

  2. Fisk contradicts himself:

I have long raged against any comparisons with the Second World War– whether of the Arafat-is-Hitler variety once deployed by Menachem Begin or of the anti-war-demonstrators-are-1930s-appeasers, most recently used by George Bush and Lord Blair of Kut al-Amara. And pro-Palestinian marchers should think twice before they start waffling about genocide when the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem once shook Hitler’s hand and said – in Berlin on 2 November 1943, to be precise – “The Germans know how to get rid of the Jews… They have definitely solved the Jewish problem.” The Grand Mufti, it need hardly be added, was a Palestinian. He lies today in a shabby grave about two miles from my Beirut home.”

  3. “Canadians are being exposed to mediums containing antisemitic messaging”

This is pretty patronising towards the Canadians. It is saying they cannot for themselves analyse a piece of news without becoming tainted by it ? I think it is stronger to argue that the association between Jews and Israel together with the poor press Israel gets is the causal factor.

    • So you are saying that the 4 million Canadians have born as antisemites and the Guardian style media permanent poison dripping, distortions and lies don’t influence them?

  4. Equating Jews to Nazis is the typical trope of the renewed Antisemites.
It tells a lot about the condition of the newsmaking media that Fisk is a revered figure/producer/trader inside this industry. Antisemitism as a vendable media good/product still sells well ahead of other media goods/producrs as it is still sought after. Market meets demand and who is Fisk to decline the wishes of the consumers, a man of principle by any chance?
Part of the market was and is stockpiling, and the political order after the Holocaust commanded stockpiling of Antisemitism, not the destruction of the good, but the selling ban/censure was always porous and is collapsing more and the last fifteen years.

      • Stockpiling is meant that the want, the fetish Antisemitism anthropological/socially stands for didn`t vanish or was destroyed, but hidden from the market of news and opinion and politically forbidden to sell/publicise, except by the left publications, renamed as Antizionism. This was the only politically allowed way out, the holes in the ban.
Somebody has to be guilty for the system, the work, liberalism, world`s injusice, whatever went wrong, .., and traditionally in Christian and Muslim societies it has to be the Jew.
Now it is Israel who impedes the peace of the world, according to the revised form of antisemitism.

  5. Fisk:
“Sickening,” Harper called this. Yes, the Canadian Prime Minister himself was using the “disease” metaphor employed by B’nai Brith.

The absolute lowlight of a steaming pool of crap from Fisk. So Harper consciously chose the word “sickening” instead of e.g. appalling?? Ah, but then the latter would likewise be furthering the disease metaphor, I suppose (“appal” originally meaning literally to make pale).

    • Spot on Pretzelberg.
It a sad day when those who chose to fight against the ills of discrimnation cannot see how far they have strayed from their original path.

    • “Filth” does not seem far from the Nazi lexicon.

Any other ethnic or religious minority protesting the attitudes towards them by the majority population would be championed by Fisk. Demented.

  6. Big difference between saying people HAVE a disease (anti-semitism) versus calling the PEOPLE THEMSELVES a disease.

    • There is no difference in overall impact on the discussion. You are suggesting they have a mental disease.A moderate view would be to say the person is wrong either factually or in summation. To dress it in terms of mental illness ensures the end of any chance of respect for each other.

      • Popeye, the moderate view is to accept the European left has always harboured anti-Semitic prejudices, or at least a lack of sympathy with the murderous persecution of Europe’s Jews (Marx, Trotsky, Luxemberg, Stalin and institutionalised Soviet anti-Semitism generally).

It would also be moderate – or at least in touch with reality – to accept that the left is the engine for the re-emergence of Western / European anti-Semitism in the 21st Century. Fisk cannot accept this, because his whole world view becomes a sham based on the moral inversions of truth and justice.

  7. Adam:

“…the Independent – a newspaper which prides itself on being guided by “enlightenment values”

The Nazis saw themselves as an enlighted movement.
This does not goes to equate the Independant staff to Nazis but it goes to show that many who think themselves above others can be terribly wrong.

  8. Fisk’s antisemitism just oozes through his wild, disjointed and thoroughly dishonest
“report” All this is highly consistent with his previous “reporting”–ALWAYS critical of democratic and courageous little Israel and supportive of their Islamic terrorist foes

In other words, it’s clear from Fisk’s disgusting distortions and lies, this deranged and inappropriate squealing shows how deep his own antisemitism is–he just can’t bear to read anything good about Israel or Jews.

    What a pathetic jerk.

  9. You even reference this very website as ‘proof’!

  10. Fisk was one of the promoters of the Jenin massacre hoax in 2002.
Even after the massacre was proven to have never happened and was all part of Pallywood lies, Fisk still refused to retract his Jenin massacre claims.

    • Zionists love playing with words – here are the facts call it what you would – war crimes, massacre violations of human rights or murder just as bad and indefensible –
Human Rights Watch found no evidence to sustain claims of massacres or large-scale extrajudicial executions by the IDF in Jenin refugee camp. However, many of the civilian deaths documented by Human Rights Watch amounted to unlawful or willful killings by the IDF. Many others could have been avoided if the IDF had taken proper precautions to protect civilian life during its military operation, as required by international humanitarian law. Among the civilian deaths were those of Kamal Zgheir, a fifty-seven-year-old wheelchair-bound man who was shot and run over by a tank on a major road outside the camp on April 10, even though he had a white flag attached to his wheelchair; fifty-eight year old Mariam Wishahi, killed by a missile in her home on April 6 just hours after her unarmed son was shot in the street; Jamal Fayid, a thirty-seven-year old paralyzed man who was crushed in the rubble of his home on April 7 despite his family’s pleas to be allowed to remove him; and fourteen-year-old Faris Zaiban, who was killed by fire from an IDF armored car as he went to buy groceries when the IDF-imposed curfew was temporarily lifted on April 11.

Some of the cases documented by Human Rights Watch amounted to summary executions, a clear war crime, such as the shooting of Jamal al-Sabbagh on April 6. Al-Sabbagh was shot to death while directly under the control of the IDF: he was obeying orders to strip off his clothes. In at least one case, IDF soldiers unlawfully killed a wounded Palestinian, Munthir al-Haj, who was no longer carrying a weapon, his arms were reportedly broken, and he was taking no active part in the fighting.

Throughout the incursion, IDF soldiers used Palestinian civilians to protect them from danger, deploying them as “human shields” and forcing them to perform dangerous work. Human Rights Watch received many separate and credible testimonies that Palestinians were placed in vulnerable positions to protect IDF soldiers from gunfire or attack. IDF soldiers forced these Palestinians to stand for extended periods in front of exposed IDF positions, or made them accompany the soldiers as they moved from house to house. Kamal Tawalbi, the father of fourteen children, described how soldiers kept him and his fourteen-year-old son for three hours in the line of fire, using his and his son’s shoulders to rest their rifles as they fired. IDF soldiers forced a sixty-five-year-old woman was forced to stand on a rooftop in front of an IDF position in the middle of a helicopter battle.

      • “ are the facts..”
Tehran Jane you would not recognise a ‘fact’ if you fell over one.
You have clearly shown that you are an inveterate liar, who posts garbage then when asked for clarification runs away and hopes nobody will notice.

      • Tell us about this “IDF position in the middle of a helicopter battle”. As a former helicopter pilot I have never heard of a helicopter battle. How many helicopters does the PA have exactly? How can a person be on a roof top and in the middle of a battle with AIRcraft? Please enlighten us.

HRW is well known for their lies about Israel. They wouldn’t know a rule of war if it bit them.

You are showing us your stupidity with such moronic lies

        • Gee you do not just get it do you? You can have a battle in which one side in helicopters attacks homes – there does not need to be both sides with helicopters – Before going into any battle the two sides do not get together and decide the weapons of war. it is not cricket when the IDF kills innocent Palestinian children with their bullets fired from helicopters or from soldiers in the street.

          • Jane, I have been trying to research some of your wilder allegations and without much success. I try not to make assertions based upon reports of others that are unsubstantiated. I feel that you do the opposite. Any report that suits your argument be it from HRW or anywhere else becomes a ‘fact’ to be used to clobber someone with a differing point of view. You surely know that in any war situation truth inevitably becomes the first casualty.

What I do know is that Hamas and Fatah seem to have combined in the West Bank, and the intention to wipe Israel off the map remains policy. I do not know personally who kidnapped the three teenagers, but I am relatively confident they didn’t shoot themselves. I hesitate to brand you an Antisemite although most of the evidence certainly points in that direction. That is because you do not seem to be able to give a balanced argument, but prefer to rely upon assertion. Antisemitism has relied upon lies and libel for the best part of two millennia. You follow in that soiled tradition.

              • Invoking a fictional character from a situation comedy and trying to use him as an argument is somewhat pathetic. This is a serious discussion to some of us.

                • It was a serious discussion maybe 10-15 years ago, until IDF hawks like you got desperate and started claiming everyone and their dog who criticizes Israel’s treatment of Palestinians is an anti-semite.

What about Chomsky, Finkelstein, Aloni, Shlomo, Beinart, Ha’aretz journalists, all five living Shinbet leaders etc. etc. etc. etc., one may ask? Oh right, they’re self-hating Jews.

Seriously, it has become such a cartoonish, laughable refrain that you and your fellow zealots have opened yourselves up to the criticism that you are pulling an “Uncle Leo” schtick from Seinfeld.

                  • I hardly think that my reply to Jane Mardell constitutes condemning everyone and their dog as being antisemites. Nor do my comments in any way make me an IDF zealot. To say so on your part is just hyperbole and displays a sweeping statement without any evidence. I am sorry that my earlier reply seems to have wound you up, but obviously winding you up is not all that difficult.

  11. I find it notable that Fisk saw fit to mention who the founder of the National Post is despite the fact that it is 100% irrelevant.

    • Also of note: His headline asks “How can ISRAEL tolerate this filth?” (SIC)
Not how can CANADA or CANADIANS but he points his accusing finger at Israel.
Also, I did a Google news search and as of now, he, the non Canadian is currently the only one who has had any objections. By his own admission, this only came about because he happened to receive a free copy on his flight home. (Note how he points out he was relieved he didn’t have to pay for it.)

  12. Anyone have image of this AD? Why can I not find it and make my own opinion?! Neither Robert Fisk, nor you have displayed it!

  13. In May Fisk wrote that ‘we’ the human race have the sickness of addiction to internet filth and racism:

“Perhaps my own fury and frustration with this state of affairs makes my response all the more direct. But the dirt, racism, foul abuse, the lies and innuendo and slanders and bullying on the web, in blogs and text messages and chat rooms, has become a sickness. “Trolls”, we call these psychologically disturbed people, and even that is indicative of our craven addiction to technology. So awed are we – so “taken over” by the new science of communication – that we have to liken these poison-pen writers and abusers to creatures of Scandinavian mythology rather than to the fantasists and racial bullies whom they really are.”–and-what-passes-for-comment-these-days-is-often-simply-foul-abuse-9433535.html

    • Yes, while most people on the internet who engage in lies and innuendo do it for free, some, like Fisk, manage to get paid for it and have it published in a major newspaper.
Someone may also want to tell him that the term “troll” is meant to be derogatory.

  14. Via Uri Avneri, Fisk readily calls Israeli Jews, if not Jews in general, ‘sick’, because of the Holocaust, in his Pity the Nation:

“Avneri was more cynical. ‘I will tell you something about the Holocaust,’ he said. ‘It would be nice to believe that people who have undergone suffering have been purified by suffering. But it’s the opposite, it makes them worse. It corrupts. There is something in suffering that creates a kind of egoism. Herzog [the Israeli president] was speaking at the site of the concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen but he spoke only about the Jews. How could he not mention that others–many others–had suffered there? Sick people, when they are in pain, cannot speak about anyone but themselves. And when such monstrous things have happened to your people, you feel nothing can be compared to it. You get a moral power-of-attorney, a permit to do anything you want–because nothing can compare with what has happened to us. This is a moral immunity which is very clearly felt in Israel. Everyone is convinced that the IDF is more humane than any other army. “Purity of arms” was the slogan of the Haganah army in early ’48. But it never was true at all.’ ”

  15. As a liberal-minded Canadian with no dog in the interminable and disgraceful Israel-Arab conflict (both sides), it seems pretty obvious what is going on here: B’nai Brith is trying to gin up that bogus “new anti-semitism” thesis in order to insulate Israel from criticism for its increasingly merciless suppression of the Palestinians. Ya, there are a lot of violent bigots in Gaza and West Bank, but if you grew up in an occupied land you would probably grow to hate your occupier too, whether they be black, Jewish, purple, Asian, Sri Lankan, whatever. Sure, the anti-semitism hysteria promoted by B’nai Brith Canada may shut some people up, but that word’s meaning and force has already been so degraded by overuse that it won’t silence debate forever. The long-term trend is fairly obvious if things keep going as they are: with each additional illegal settlement on occupied land, each additional war crime against Palestinians, Israel is losing the support of the world, and fast. Some of this may surely be due to anti-semitism, but the sad truth is most of it is due to regular people recognizing a grave and perpetual injustice where they see one, regardless of any ethnic or religious considerations.

And for those non-Canadians on here just chomping at the bit to grill me about my country’s treatment of Aboriginal Canadians, save your breath. I agree with you. If it were up to me I would break up the national police force responsible for abducting those thousands of kids from their families. At least Canada admits its wrongdoing, however, whereas extremist groups like B’nai Brith want to pretend everything is dandy and that the Palestinians’ desperate lot is exclusively due to their own poor political leadership.

    • Ya, there are a lot of violent bigots in Gaza and West Bank, but if you grew up in an occupied land you would probably grow to hate your occupier too, whether they be black, Jewish, purple, Asian, Sri Lankan, whatever

Funny they didnt hate the Jordanian or Egyptian when they were occupying them until 67.

  16. As a liberal-minded Canadian with no dog in the interminable and disgraceful Israel-Arab conflict (both sides), it seems pretty obvious what is going on here
