Guardian letter notes the evils of our time: War, racism, rape…and Zionism

If you want to see a good example of the Guardian Left’s malign anti-Zionist obsession, and the capacity of some advocates for peace and progress to become nearly deranged when contemplating the Jewish state, look no further than this letter published by the Guardian on Dec. 11th, praising Bradley Manning’s defense of transgender rights.

Whilst the glaring facts relating to Israel’s clear progressive advantages in the area of LGBT rights should be obvious to any serious observer of the region, the moral equation posited by Rossi and Martin, by which Zionism represents a civilizational threat on par with war, racism, and sexual violence, goes beyond mere hypocrisy and double standards.

It’s instructive to recall an especially important section of a widely read essay by former AP journalist Matti Friedman, concerning another element of the modern obsession with Jews and Israel:

For centuries, stateless Jews played the role of a lightning rod for ill will among the majority population. They were a symbol of things that were wrong. Did you want to make the point that greed was bad? Jews were greedy. Cowardice? Jews were cowardly. Were you a Communist? Jews were capitalists. Were you a capitalist? In that case, Jews were Communists. Moral failure was the essential trait of the Jew…

Like many Jews who grew up late in the 20th century in friendly Western cities, I dismissed such ideas as the feverish memories of my grandparents. One thing I have learned…is that I was foolish to have done so. Today, people in the West tend to believe the ills of the age are racism, colonialism, and militarism. The world’s only Jewish country has done less harm than most countries on earth, and more good—and yet when people went looking for a country that would symbolize the sins of our new post-colonial, post-militaristic, post-ethnic dream-world, the country they chose was this one.

When the people responsible for explaining the world to the world, journalists, cover the Jews’ war as more worthy of attention than any other, when they portray the Jews of Israel as the party obviously in the wrong, when they omit all possible justifications for the Jews’ actions and obscure the true face of their enemies, what they are saying to their readers—whether they intend to or not—is that Jews are the worst people on earth. The Jews are a symbol of the evils that civilized people are taught from an early age to abhor. International press coverage has become a morality play starring a familiar villain.

LGBT rights campaigners who rail against the ‘scourge’ of Zionism have been taken in by a truly twisted ideology, one which arguably calls upon historic anti-Jewish antipathies, and clearly distorts the words ‘liberal’ and ‘progressive’ beyond recognition.

  1. Reader letters are a great platform for the Guardian, because they can publish all kinds of vile nonsense and not take responsibility for it. A form of trolling by proxy.

Also it makes their important reader demographic of the mentally deranged feel like they have a voice. Other than the voices in their head.

    • It is called “innuendo” and is a major building block of the Left’s dynamic. Islamism coincidentally is also full of innuendo. As is Putin.

  2. I have some contact with LGBT radical leftist types, Zionism is a very abstract buzzword for them. These guys LOVE having different buzzwords for things that already have a name. Still, this is vile even by their hipster standards. Assuming the western radical left opposes Zionism because they perceive it as a colonialist or imperialist movement, then saying “anti-imperialist” would cover Zionism and the rest of the planet. By specifying Zionism along with very general global causes, you imply that Zionism is a massive global force that affects everyone on the planet, just like war, rape and racism. It’s an anti-semitic allusion to Jewish forces corrupting the world.

    • Yes, Zionism = Rothchild = Illuminati = green lizards = Mossad = 9/11 = corrupting the world.
Anyone who claims these people are not psychotic needs to think again.

    • I think it is even worse than you think. They don’t oppose Zionism merely because Jews are “white” and Arabs are the struggling oppressed indigenous people.

They oppose Zionism because it is based on national identity. On the idea that Jews are nation. The Left do not believe that any group has right to define itself as nation and all forms of nationalism are evil. For the Left Nationalism = Fascism.

If Israels only sin was to be a result of Jewish nationalism the left might still find it in their hearts to forgive us. However Israel is also representative of Judaism. The religion of the Jews. If there anything the Left hates anything more than nationalism it would be religion.

So Israel is guilty of the double sin of being both a religious and nationalistic movement. For this the Left seems to think the destruction of Israel along with 6 million Jews is morally justified and the only way to bring world peace.

  3. By specifying Zionism along with very general global causes, you imply that Zionism is a massive global force that affects everyone on the planet, just like war, rape and racism. It’s an anti-semitic allusion to Jewish forces corrupting the world.
    Well said.

  4. I don’t really care what these two “experts” on civilizations’ travails have to say about the global forces working inside their heads. But I do care that the “world’s leading liberal voice” approved and featured it on its pages. As we find all too much with such “progressives” these people talk about global problems without mentioning global jihad, i.e., a movement that is a) global, b) on the rise, c) quite dangerous, and d) doesn’t exactly look on transgender rights with glowing approval, to put it mildly. And yet Jews living on a sliver of land and governing themselves instead of being governed by others is a big problem for these two dummies. It’s obvious that these two have inhaled enough Guardian to get published. Perhaps someone ought to inform them that when ISIS slices off your penis and chops off your balls the entire surgery is done.

  5. Now that the Guardian has explained it to me; war, racism and rape don’t seem all that bad, do they? I’m sure Chelsea Manning won’t complain if I defect from supporting her to focus on the real problem of the entire world.

  6. I lost the plot on this ramble . But I think what the letter writer was saying was even transgender army issues can be linked to world wide anti-Zionism . Yes , totally logical , NOT.
Let these idjuts stand in the raIn , shouting their nonsense . I hope they have a fun day out .

  7. I agree, of course, that the lumping in of Zionism with war, racism and rape is vile and offensive, and that the letter-writers probably includes Zionism on that list because they consider it an evil, but this is merely another in a long line of prima facie defensible smears, as they don’t actually comment directly on whether Zionism is “good” or “bad”. They merely report the fact that “anti-Zionist” groups have campaigned on Manning’s behalf (as hypocritical as such campaigns may be).

As that is the case, I very much doubt any correction or apology will be forthcoming.

  8. Friedman doesn’t quite get it right: in the Christian and Islamic cultures and civilizations whence derive much of the modern world, Jews were notoriously evil for rejecting or persecuting Jesus and the prophets i.e. the saints, righteous and Righteousness i.e. the Good generally. This model is recapitulated/iterated, probably usually unconsciously, in seeing Israel as especially violating the Right and Good, such that its actions are magnified way above others’. Israel’s crimes are quasi-cosmic crimes. I wish prominent media Jews like Jonathan Freedland would enunciate this in the Guardian.

    • Conversely, Israel’s victims acquire for many a de facto quasi-saintly status, despite all evidence to the contrary.

    • “Jews were notoriously evil for rejecting or persecuting Jesus and the prophets i.e. the saints,….”

Are you suggesting that anyone believes that St. Peter was crucified, upside down, on Vatican Hill by the Jews?
Or that St. Paul was beheaded, in Rome, by the Jews?

      • Dear Gerald,

        a) I am not suggesting any such thing constitutes objective fact,

        b) ‘saint’ for Christian purposes constitutes those of the ‘Old’ as well as ‘New Testaments’,

        c) that the Jews hated the Christians far more than even the pagan gentiles was actually a patristic commonplace, with a corollary that

        d) Jews were somehow most responsible for even pagan persecution of Christians.

        e) unfortunately even some modern Church historians take some of the ancient patristic allegations of Jewish responsibility for Christian persecutions too much face value, without taking account of the ancient patristic polemical need too somehow make those +they+ hated most, the Jews, responsible for the persecution they received from those they most hoped to convert. This paranoid worldview nowhere takes more form than the myth of Antichrist, who would be, it was alleged, a Roman Caesar either born a Jew or converted to Judaism, who would restore the Jews, rebuild the temple and install his own worship therein. According to Victorinus of Pettau, the ‘mark of the beast’ is nothing less than circumcision.

I hope this answers your question sufficiently, Gerald.
