Guardian returns Gilad Atzmon’s antisemitic book to its online shelves

Within 24 hours of our post in October 2011, noting that the Guardian’s online bookshop was selling Gilad Atzmon’s grossly antisemitic book, The Wandering Who?, they removed the title from their virtual shelves.

However, at some point in the subsequent weeks following the removal, the Guardian placed the book back on their online shop.

Then, in March 2012, we learned that the Guardian reversed course yet again, and noted that “The Wandering Who has [again] been removed from the Guardian Bookshop site”. They attributed the re-availability of the book to a problem with their automated feeds.

The Guardian’s Readers’ Editor addressed the issue in a post (“…On the inclusion of controversial titles in our bookshop“) on March 11:

Gilad Atzmon’s The Wandering Who? was removed because of the controversy it has caused. Atzmon says he is anti-Zionist but he has been accused of making antisemitic remarks, including past praise for the “prophetic qualities” of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a falsified tract purporting to show plans for Jewish domination of the world that was written by agents of Tsarist Russia. [emphasis added]

…After strong protests last November about the inclusion of Atzmon’s book in the Guardian’s online bookshop, we removed it from the electronic feed but it was later restored on our bookshop lists and therefore other newspapers’ feeds. One reason was the technological problem but the others were considered to be broader issues. At the time Guardian executives considered that:

• If a book is removed, the impression may be created that the Guardian “approves” of all the other books on the Guardian’s bookshop feed.

• Removing a book lends an unjustified cachet to it.

When the book was restored to the list, a much clearer explanation of what the list represents for the Guardian was used:

In addition to our recommendations, our browsable selection of books also includes a feed of the top 5,000 bestselling titles through independent booksellers (not including Amazon) as supplied by Bertrams. Inclusion in this automated feed does not necessarily denote recommendation by GNM.

Now the book is off the list again following renewed protests.  It will remain so.

However, while browsing the Guardian’s online bookshop just yesterday, we noticed that Atzmon’s book was once again available.

Here’s a snapshot of their page this morning (Feb. 23).

We of course don’t know how this book (described by CST as “probably the most antisemitic book published in this country in recent years.”) returned to the Guardian’s online shop, but we certainly intend to find out.

We’ll keep you posted.

  1. Next on the Guardian promotion list: Mein Kampf, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, The ewige Jude and the collected copies of its German language version – the Sturmer.
But again – what a good feeling to know that the Eu leaders are very optimistic about the Jews’ future in Europe…

    • Peter,
I’m surprised at you. Don’t you know that by not including Mein Kampf the impression may be created that the Guardian “approves” of all the other books on the Guardian’s bookshop feed ?

  2. fritz – you are a cynic can you not see that the Gooniadian is giving a discount , Its getting 20 pc cheaper to be an anti Semite .

  3. Itsa killer deal. Cant say no.

It will be on the LSE gender studies curriculum reading list. Right after Ali El Hussein’s “Abstinence is Rape: Why IDF soldiers don’t rape Palestinian’s”, Pluto Press Publishing.

  4. Its a rubbish promo anyway giving 20 pc off .
If an anti Semite not prepared to spend a tenner what does £8 make a hoot of difference .

I suggest they say something like – buy a dozen and get a free pair of jackboots or a signed picture of Galloway , buy 2 dozen and get on a channel 4 documentary , buy 400 and get a free all expenses paid trip to an international conference at Southampton university Kefiyah included as part of deal . Buy 1000 and get free trip to Gaza on a flotilla barge from N Cyprus with a bunch of crazies and smugglers as crew mates .

  5. “An outrageous equivalence; the Quran and Mein Kampf. Shame on you.”

    Dinkle , why ?

Do both books not preach the irrational hatred of Jews ?
Are both books not a blue print of how a totalitarian society should be ?
Are both books regularly cited by anti Semites ?
Does not some of the extreme Islamic groups revel in Nazi imagery ?

Its not so outrageous and worthy of a comparative study

  6. Dinks .
am getting bored waiting for a coherent answer , or just any answer from you . However it seems to me that both books cover elements of :

    Hatred of Jews.
    Contempt for outsiders.
    Militarism and conquest.
    God-like veneration of leader.
    “Holy” book produced by leader.
Women expected to stay in the home.
    Anti freedom of speech.
    Anti freedom of religion.
    Torture and capital punishment.
    Fanaticism and violence.

as I said , both books blue prints for totalitarianism .
Have you read both books ? Its pretty transparent . Lots of academic theses on the subject etc etc . Doh ! That’s why democracy is so hard to establish in the ME in a muslim state . democracy is not their ideology .

I am surprised you reject the comparative out of hand. It is most unobjective and irrational of you . :-p

    • If you have to ask, you won’t be told.

Any of the great books of our monotheistic religions are open to many interpretations. You can take from them what you want to justify a view and you can find the justification for rape, murder, torture or conquest in each of them if your mind is so disposed.

But to place one of them (the Quran) in the same category as Hitler’s manifesto of annihilation, death and subjugation is at best, troubling, at worst an example of the myopic hatred that continues to fuel the conflict in the ME.

I thought you were better than that LC

      • Dinks

well done . I think there is hope for you .

How many Universities hold these loony events like Mr Millett reports on ? Or southampton Uni conferences or whats shown in Memri TV . Yet an academic who dares challenge the fundamentals of Islam is a no go area .

Now Dinks, you defend or mitigate the crap against Israel and Jews as free comment or sometimes an error of fact but rare enough you say – That is wrong and abhorrent as so categorically as your total defence for the Quran .

Why do you choose to be blind on one issue and focus in microscope on another ? Is this not the essential hypocrisy of the Gooniadian ? You can challenge and belittle Jews but goodness sake don’t mention the Quran.

This thread is about what book the Goonadian deems acceptable and what isn’t . An Anti Semites book is coolio . Its just the computer system that keeps on putting it for sale on Gooniadian website . No human anti semites involved 🙂
Your reply was basically – Its cool also . Amazon sells it so it cannot be wrong . That was a low blow to justify a bad deed on the basis that others do bad deeds . I expected better from you there to be honest .

I ask you to reflect . I assume you are also able to learn a lesson occasionally .
I was not attacking Islam . I was attacking some of the hypocrisy of your posts .

If you really are an anti racist and believe in freedom of speech also – then man up and show your credentials and don’t hide behind false mitigations . You can stand up for the Quran so why don’t you stand up against anti Semitism

There is hope for you . I think you are a smart cookie [ and prob work or has worked for goonadian ]. I appreciate the exchanges with you . But with regret your position needs revision .

        • Err, no I’m not totally defending the Quran. I’m pointing out that placing it in the same category as Mein Kampf is wrong on many levels.

You then say that the Quran is fill of bad stuff. And I say so are all the great books – Bible, Tanakh are full of such writings. The books were written centuries ago. The problem today is how some choose to interpret them to further their aims and to twist their meaning in order to put a moral justification on evil.

Blaming the Quran on such acts is like blaming cars for speeding.

          • lols

people choose to read their own material. sadly not enough books , more like you tube . I wish everyone read books of wisdom and culture . Perhaps also humour more often .
I was provoking you for a response . But we move on .

      • I thought you were better
Don`t overdo, piece of with that mind in blackout

But to place one of them (the Quran) in the same category as Hitler’s manifesto of annihilation, death and subjugation is at best, troubling, at worst an example of the myopic hatred that continues to fuel the conflict in the ME.

The constant misquotations, the constant big lies just like the Goebbelian ones of the Quran and the denial of Muslim antisemitism by Muslims and their fellow travelers, too, fuel the conflict,
A lot of Muslim representatives in the west use a complete incorrect citation of the Quran to prove the peacefulness, whereas the correct prove the Jew hate in the Quran.
        The big lie:
Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption in the land, it’s as if he has slain mankind entirely, and whoever saves one life, it’s as if he has saved mankind entirely.
        Correct citation:
Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption in the land – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.

It´s just pervert to reframe a language of subdueing and persecution of Jews into a prove of the peacefulness of a religion. But the west wants to buy the forgery, just like the Protocols in the first half of the 19th century.

What does that make the representatives? A bunch of liars, and/or antisemites and propagandists, downright insincere, or complete, but incompetent fools.
And what makes it the politicians the west? Whether complete and incompetent fools, or, knowing the truth, downright antisemites or cowards scarred the pants off who try to hide the truth fearing more terror. And that makes them vulnerable to blackmail by some Muslim representatives, give us more money, respect our rules, give us exclusive rights, otherwise we explode.

      • So you don’t know the difference between the holy texts of the different Abrahamic religions?
Could you tell how many people have been beheaded, executed, oppressed in the last two centuries (or in the last two weeks) using Christian and Jewish scriptures as a pretext? And the number of people have been beheaded, executed, oppressed in the last two centuries (or in the last two weeks) using the Quran as the moral pretext of doing exactly this?
But don’t worry I didn’t think you were better than that…
